Normal Tongue - There is Hope

So many people write to me asking if the orange tongue (e:paul,54192) ever resolved itself. I can totally understand their pain and concern as it was making my life a living hell. It did resolve itself. I did nothing extraordinary other than get a root canal on a tooth that was bothering me but it had already subsided before then mostly. After about 2 years it just went away. I still get geographic tongue every once and a while but its usually one nice pink slate and never orange.

I guess I also did start using a water pic ever day to clean my gums thoroughly.

Do you still suffer from orange tongue? Did you ever find out what the issue was?!
I too have been suffering from the same problem. Been to the doctor dozens of times, only to be told my tongue looks "normal' and to use a tongue brush if I am concerned. ...There are some days I wake up with very little orange and some days I look like I sucked on orange popsicle.
This is driving me crazy - it was nice to see someone else with the same issue.

Everything I ate or drank, even water, tasted bitter for about two weeks. Then it just went away. I know it sounds weird, but it's a real thing. You can Google it.

I seriously went to so many doctors it was crazy. A research dentist at UB even had a bunch of his students look at it. The geographic tongue is a genetic thing. The combo or geographic tongue and orange tongue made it look really gross.

(E:TinyPliny) and I researched the crap out of it.

It started when a dentist gave me this stuff called called magic mouthwash that was a combo of antifungal, anti bacterial and anti inflammatory steroid after mistaking the geographic tongue for some sort of infection. This was before I knew what it was.

Two days later my tongue turned hot orange and kind of stayed that way for a long time. It did not hurt or itch or anything like you'd expect from an infection and my breath did not smell bad during it. It was not thrush or a fungal infection as antifungals did nothing. Every dentist/doctor would always say, doesn't look like any infection I've ever seen are you sure you aren't eating anything orange. At one point I even stopped eating anything orange color for weeks just to prove them wrong. The thing that made it most ornate was fresh greens like salad or spinich.

Chlorhexidine would work but it would come back as soon as I stopped and everything tasted terrible so I quit.

did your breath smell bad? i am very curious to find out about it. did you use a tongue scraper ever?

Neem Toothpaste

I am giving this a try. Brush with neem, scrape tongue with scraper, chew gum. Its seems less orange. Next step is accupuncture if this does not work.

My Disgusting Geographic Orange Tongue

This Wednesday, I finally gave an appointment with a dentist that specializes in geographic tongue thanks to some research by (e:tinypliny). I am ready for it to be over. Hopefully they can do something about it.

I did do the medication for yeast, en in cleared it up for about 3 days but reappeared. I have no history of periodontal issues either this all simply started after the root canal and antibiotics. IMO I do think it's bacterial/fungal in nature, mine has passed complete through my system, whatever is in my mouth has made it's way out so to speak. (e:Paul) has (to my knowledge) had more than 3 different dentist consults with no particular diagnosis apart from their telling them that it is geographic tongue.

(e:Paul) thinks its perhaps microbleeds from the tongue surface that shows up as bright orange - possibly due to some pH changing reaction with either fungal or bacterial metabolites on the oral mucosa. He has noticed his toothbrush getting stained with the blood occasionally, hence the microbleed theory. It seems more plausible than others.

A few months back there was another person on the internet who sent (e:Paul) a message that he should maybe try a local application of tetracycline (as in smash a tablet and put the powder directly on the tongue). Apparently, this get the orange tongue in check. But I am not sure if (e:Paul) ever tried it.

I am sure I am missing details in between. In fact, I am interested to know what blanks I have left out...

I also have geographic tongue and after two rounds of very heavy antibiotics (amoxi and cipro) I developed an orange tongue. I then had a root canal with a replacement tooth put on (not metal) That was 6 months ago and its STILL orange, exact same color as yours. I was also very sick after the root canal to the point I had to go to Mayo Clinic. The swab came back Neg for yeast. I've tried Difluxcan (sp?) oil pulling, tongue scrapers with no luck. Just to lower those expectations a bit. a) His senior fellow told me that he sees *many* patients with geographic tongue in his practice regularly. I am not sure that is equivalent to being an expert. ;-) Quite honestly, I wasn't really researching dentists. His senior fellow is my new officemate and I asked her a ton of questions before she was like "You should meet with my professor! He deals with it everyday, day in and day out!"

Orange Tongue at The Gastroenterologist

Also has no idea about the orange tongue. He seemed totally surprised by it. Thinks maybe acid reflux, maybe the tooth, maybe something else but not related to Crohns. The fact that terry also has an orange tongue was the real strange part. He kept referring to my UC, and I was like, "I thought I had crohns?" He now seems to think it is UC instead which I guess is better and I can cut the meds from 3 to 2 pills a day.

The doc gave me a script for a test called prometheus IBD Serology 7. "Helps identify IDB and differentiate between UC and CD. Includes 7 tests: ASCA IgA, ASCA IgG, Anti-OmpC IgA, Anti-CBir1, NSNA ELISA, IFA perinuclear pattern, IFA DNase sensitivity."

He also told me to try prilosec for a short two week stint to see if it helps with orange tongue and to rule out GERD.

I think I am finally at the point where I am just going to try acupuncture. I mean I have spent probably $200 in copays at this point and gotten nothing from western medicine. Maybe its time to try something else.

Everytime I went to the otolaryngoloist I got a different student doctor who never has any idea and is always gone the next time I visit. They always suggest more magic mouthwash or "some people's tongues are all different colors", or "maybe it autoimmune." , "lets just monitor it some more and see, make an appointment for 2 months from now" or my very favorite: "are you sure you haven't eaten anything orange?"

I think I have been there 5 times. Do you know a better doctor who would do a culture? I would gladly go to anyone who is interested in figuring it out.

Strangely, since the orange tongue I have eaten so much less protein. To rule that out. My urine and salva PH are pretty normal. My diet is mostly vegetables, brown rice, white rice and some fruit. I gave up protein shakes. I have had one this month. None of those things changed anything. My tongue is still freaking orange.

Lets say (e:terry) didn't exist. In that case, I guess with the prolosec I thought of it as more of an identification method. If taking the prilosec makes the orange tongue stop it would seem like I then could stop it and try and modify my diet further. However, if the prilosec did nothing then we could just lee out GERD. Part of me is slightly terrified of trying it because if it reduces your stomach acid, is it just going to make me more susceptible to orange tongue pathogen?

The gastro and dentist said I could try removing the metal tooth as some people have reaction to metal that change the color of their skin.

I mean they are doing this surely expensive genetic test for for Crohns/UC differentiation/identification you think they could try a simple culture of the orange tongue to try and identify a pathogen, so that at least that could be ruled out.

When you say you have received nothing from western medicine and are ready to try anything, what you are saying is that you get no *instant relief* from anything. That, in a nutshell, is what western medicine is ALL about. Instant pill. Instant relief. The concept of prevention is brought out as a facade whenever it is convenient - sometimes never.

The "something else" is non-evidence based kooky and often exotic stuff which may or may not work but it ALSO atrociously expensive. Again, prevention is a concept that is never explicitly stated in alternative medicine. Prevention takes a LONG time, a lot of patience and there is no instant anything. By LONG, I mean YEARS, DECADES. And why should it be any different than that? How can you expect to fix anything that has broken over years and decades in a month or less? It is llogical.

I think this might be the worst day of it ever. According to some reports I was reading it could be caused by a bacteria that produces melanin. They made it not sound very dangerous but I still hate it.

I can't believe it was barely present yesterday morning when I went to the dentist.

I joke woke up at 7am to have the "doctor" take my $20, touch my throat and tell me my tongue looks freaking normal. It does not look normal. Then she said it might just be retaining the color of food I have eaten. I had to leave or I was going to kill her.

After a really stressful evening it turned an even prettier orange.

There are kits out there that can help students culture bacteria etc. at home. See: :::link::: and :::link:::

However, I am not sure that is your objective here. I think you are looking for an accurate diagnostic culture here, to determine what that organism is - if it is fungal or bacterial or whatever or maybe not an organism at all but some chemical reaction. This is so we can determine what is its favoured environment of growth and target measures at depriving it of this environment or maybe understand what exactly it is. With that objective in mind, you would need an absolutely sterile environment to avoid cross-contamination with foreign bacteria or fungi. It's not enough that you have a clean, bleached place. You need an air-controlled cell-culture hood to make absolutely sure that you are introducing no other organism but the organism of interest. Let's say you have this sterile hood from somewhere, the next step is setting up the culture in SEVERAL media - all of which don't come pre-prepared. This is because we don't know what that orange thing will grow best in. For example, they found that the Tuberculosis bacteria grows best in the LJ medium :::link::: after years of experimentation. All these media need to be sterile as well - to prevent contamination.

I could make a few basic media using recipes provided by the lab, but quite honestly I doubt my media making and culturing abilities without supervision - for diagnostic culturing. Many of these media etc. are provided to institutions by scientific companies like Fisher etc. I am not sure if they even supply individuals....

To cut my rambling short, yes it's possible to culture random organisms for fun at home (hey! that's how microbiology started centuries back!). But diagnostic culture is a completely different (sterile) beast that is next to impossible to achieve (with the degree of confidence you need) from a home setup.

I am wondering if you can request a culture from UB or any institutional microbiology lab or even a commercial lab without a prescription/order from a practicing physician... Some infectious disease-focused GPs who also do research can do these cultures in their lab...

Also, if by changing your diet habits, you see an improvement in the orange tongue symptoms, it will show indirectly that the organism (or chemical product) cannot survive in the changed environment of your mouth. In that case, why bother with the culture - when you know how to stop it from coming back?

orange tongue continued

Tomorrow I have a doctors appt. No one seems to be able to figure it out.

Symptoms: orange tongue followed by spots that appear small and pink and grow larger. The spots never have orange.

Doctor thought geographic tongue but I can't find anything connecting geographic tongue to orange tongue.

Eventually the pink areas grow large and the tongue looks like new. Then it stops, several weeks go by and the cycle starts over. The orange never goes away.

Orange tongue and body PH

So I measured my morning PH as the test strip pocket suggests. Urine 5.75-6.0 , saliva 6.75. I guess I am acidic but according to the packet the healthiest urine is 6.0-6.9 and I was close. The second reading was almost exactly 6.0.

The more intereting/ gross part is that my orange tongue now also includes orange spit. I didn't reaalize till I spit it out to measure the Ph.

I get so frustrated when I read things like the following. I already eat a varied natural foods diet, I don't do drugs or drink, I exercise, I guess I have stress but who doesn't. I've barely ever taken antibiotics in my life, except for like during surgery and I sleep well. Not to mention my gastroenterologist can only schedule me in May 5th at 7:45am. What the frick? I need a new doctor. Its weird, I have money, I have insurance, I have a problem and there is no doctor - again.

I have experienced orange tongue since December 2007. I saw the gastroenterologist and told me it was a yeast infection in my mouth. I was give nDiflucan for about a week. It seemed to go away but it came back as soon as finished this medication. Same the antibiotics. Later I learned that its not a yeast infection. But it definitely has to do with the stomach. It definitley comes from a combination of extremeties like stress, eating poorly, not excersing, and not getting proper sleep and the misuse of antibiotics and over the counter medicines. I have ulcer, hiatal hernia, gastritis, and ulcerative proctoctis. I saw a macrobiologist doctor in February and he was able to tell me my deficiencies. According to him I was lacking oxygen, developing kidney stones, pancreatis (pancreatitis), etc. It all makes sense. Our bodies are not designed to intake chemicals. I completely changed my diet and starting taking probiotics and herbs to heal myself naturally. I have been improving slowly, I feel better and the orange coating is not as dark as before. Definitely take oil of oregano, garlic and mastic gum helps as well as eating organic whole foods. WE NEED TO DETOX OUR BODIES NATURALLY!

At a minimum most of the people reporting this seem to agrees the bitter metal taste is terrible.

Maybe an allergy to metal to the metal in my new fake tooth - It seemed to start right after I got it?

hi everyone, i too have orange tongue. I actually got this years ago when i was a kid and had braces, no one could really figure it out, i was sent to specialist after specialist and they eventually decided it was an allergy to the metal in the braces, and took them out.

Yoga Night

Yoga was fun last night. I really nailed the headstand poses. Then afterwards I hung out with (e:tinypliny). We tried to figure out what is killing my tongue and making it orange.

I've been concerned more because now I have this massive heartburn with it. Tiny suggested changing my eating schedule to eat less before bed and too eat smaller portions throughout the day.

I tried reducing protein intake starting today but I'm not convinced my food is to acidic but rather its my eating habit or just my crohns attacking my upper GI. That being said I don't think our dinner helped although it was delicious. Maybe it's time for another doctors appt. I still blame the fake tooth.

Whole grain toast/flax seed generally doesn't sit well with me. I could try brown rice or oat meal - those seem to not bother me?

So I tried out the Ph strips and my urine was 6.75ish. I thought that was good but then I saw it should be over 7.2. Its so hard to know whats real or not :::link:::

I'll have to test it plus the saliva in the morning.

The objectives for breakfast and dinner are completely different.

You want the breakfast to be digested slowly and provide you with a nearly constant plateau of blood glucose that will hold you till mid morning, when you have another small portion meal with proteins. The problem with having a liquid breakfast is, it doesn't have that much staying power as a breakfast with fiber and complex carbohydrates and a balanced dose of protein.

The two times before I would normally have a big meal. The morning big meal usually being a protein shake with banana and whey powder. That being said it just Burns most of the time now. It kin of feels like the feeling you get after doing a shot of vodka.

paul writes at 11:41:25 04/14/11 - Comment #61773: Today was kind of a disaster. My stomach was sour all day and my tongue has that hole in it now. I decided to tru and eat lunch with Sameer but I got a veggie taco at ETS and to me it was way too spicy.

Then I went home at night and cooked lots of neutral green veggies. I tried to eat just greens but it just made me hungry. So I added yogurt. I hadn't eaten yogurt in a long time and my whole throat got super itchy. Not sure if it was the yogurt or some other random thing though.

Really the whole constant burning thing is making me nuts.

All the factors are:
1. Eating times and portion sizes.
2. High protein diet.
3. I also have to factor in the two days I took a third dose crohns meds.
4. The new terrible bitter taste in my mouth.
5. The geographic tongue
6. The orange tongue coating.

However, if you are okay with being the size you are and just maintaining muscle mass, increase your non-protein calories so that you are not starving and exhausted.

The idea of numerous small portions throughout the day (at say, 2-3 hours gap) is to not let your stomach release acid in anticipation of food that is really delayed. Also, small portions just before bedtime will not require so much time to transit out of the stomach, so you don't necessarily need to be awake for 3-4 hours after a light meal.

But I do recommend eating the SAME amount of protein that you do now (you could even increase it) staggered throughout the day with the maximum protein meal at breakfast and mid-morning, slowing grading down the protein as the day winds down. Also, it's fine if you have a heavy dinner once in a while but you need to make sure that you don't go to sleep immediately after. A nice 3 hour gap between the meal and sleep should allow the stomach to empty out almost 75% and prevent reflux.

I am so terribly sorry that I gave you tea. The irony of it was I was preaching low-acid meals all that time! Annoying me!

All my teas are black and highly caffeinated and probably acidic as well. I think that is why Indian teas are heavily moderated with milk and honey/sugar. It makes sense... I don't know how Americans have acquired this taste for drinking black coffee straight on all the time because as far as the gastric lining is concerned, its doing it no good at all.
