Eating with lilho

After a busy day of production while avoiding reading, (e:lilho) took me out to a calamri dinner. It was delicious. I hope someday, I can also have enough money to buy my own calamari dinner.

image

I was a little conflicted about the whole thing as (e:terry) had cooked a very nice spegehtti sauce dinner with some canned tomatos from the thousand jars at nonna's house. There are litterally so many that we are still eating the ones from 2002. I wonder if the aged ones are worth more like wine.

Afterward, we stopped at (e:jason) 's. It was nice to meet him and his friend. This is a pic from his proch across from spot, the future home of the banner. He said he is coming to (e:ajay) 's shindig. I hope everyone else is too.

Germany's Calling

I received a phone message from Yvonne at like 5 in the morning her time last night. I wonder what is going on with her. Unfortunately, like everyone else, she had no idea that my voice mail does not play out loud. People try so hard to get me to pick up the phone, but I can't hear them on voicemail, until after they have finsihed saving the message.

::DOWNLOAD SOUND::

I will call her tonight, I miss speaking German so much. It is weird that she spoke English on the voice mail because I think I have only heard her speak English two or three times in all the years we knew each other. With Vonage, calling Germany is only 3 cents per minute. It's even cheaper than calling my mom in Kenmore on my cell phone.

OS X on Dell

It seems that since Apple (Quote, Chart) decided to move its processors away from IBM's PowerPC and onto Intel (Quote, Chart), other companies might be looking for a way to get in themselves.

Michael Dell, Dell founder and chairman, told Fortune magazine Thursday he wouldn't mind adding Apple's OS to its software product list, which includes a couple flavors of Linux to go with its Windows-heavy lineup.

"If Apple decides to open the Mac OS to others, we would be happy to offer it to our customers," he said in an e-mail to the publication.Quoted from: Dell Bullish on Mac OS?

Why don't the other companies just come out with their own flavor of linux. I mean it all starts out half developed as open-source projects, just like with OS X. Similar to the lindows operating system that Walmart sells. More and more computer hardware companies should just begin to develop their own instead of creating another "windows."

Blood Pressure

After a stressful day or arguing about our depressong financial outlook, we went to wegmans. Apparently, arguing and stressing out makes your blood pressure go up. Mine jumped like 20 pts to 104, lol. The result of today is that we are officially poorer than the poor with no debt but we are not moving to Nonnas house.

Watermelon Hubba Bubba Gum

Does anyone else rememer watermelon hubba bubba gum? It was so soft and chewy and green striped on the outside and yummy pink sugary goodness in the middle. I can almost taste it whlel writing this.

Apparently, they went out of business in 1994 and then returned in 2004 under wrigley's as hubba max but now it is strawberry mixed with watermelon flavor. You should check out their page it is very entertaining and interactive.

I tried their new watermelon gum log pictured below and it was disgusting. I just want the old gum back.

Nonna's house - Cleanout

I am spending the day with my mother going through Nonna's stuff. I also found out the whole apartment has that really nice wooden floor under it. I think moving here wouldn't be so bad, if we could redo it a bunch.

We found lots of stuff. In fact, Nonna actually collected every ticket stub for everytime she used any type of transportation. You should see the graphic design from the travel industry in the 1960s. I would say it is even better than now. My mom wants (e:matthew) to make a nonna trnaportation themes cut out from them.

I got a blood pressure machine and a digital thermometer. No more need for a doctor. I also got my mom's old teeth.

Bye Bye Dream job

I had found an amazing PHP/MySQL programmer job and had gotten to the point where it looked promising and I had an interview at the studio set up for Thursday. Then I went to look up the address and realized it was not in Buffalo but rather in Syracuse. In my excitement I somehow mixed up Franklin Street in Buffalo with Franklin Square in Syracuse!

My life is just a series of cruel job dramas. Anyone want to hire an accomplished PHP, MySQL, D/XHTML, javascript, CSS programmer and graphic designer for steady work in Buffalo?

Ebay Sales

I am so angry that I sold my new/old tablet PC on ebay for too cheap $249.00 . I used to sell so much stuff on ebay. The original pre 2003 code for this site started that way actually, lol. I don't think any of it is left now. Maybe a bit here or there.

I never thought someone pay the buy it now price for the fujitsu that I paid for it. I guess it is good to break even but still it makes me sad to say goodbye. Selling stuff on ebay is so freakin' easy, if you never tried it you should. It was a seven day sale and it was sold the night I posted it.

Science and Evolution

In response to (e:jason) [inlink]jason,159[/inlink]: Science does make many mistakes, and because we were not directly involved in the research for most of scientific discovery, it is easy to write off science as a blind faith initiaitive such as religion. (e:matthew) and I argue with (e:terry) about this all the time.

However, there is a problem with just writing off scientific inquiry and that is that it works much of the time. Predicition through repeated and controlled observation is often an accurate methodology. Most of our lives are dependent on technological innovations based on this scientific method, the same method used to demonstrate the theory evolution. I think it is really important, that although we teach public school children that evolution is a theory, that we also do not deny the obvious fossil record and the many expirements conducted.

There really is a difference between, god created the people 10,000 years ago on a whim and we started as little one-celled creature that turned into ourselves. I could maybe even accept that people say that at some point the cosmos was created by god because science has no explanation for the extriverse.

We also have talked about the occurance of evolution in today's world. It is dangerous to talk about because it can easily end up having hitlerian, social darwinist overtones. I think humans have used science to control evolution and that for a while now we are in a standstill of evolution because anything that would lead to extinction through natural selection is often overcome through science. This keeps gene pool pretty constant(this is pure speculation, I am not a scientist). In America there is almost nothing outside of random chance and a few terminal illnesses that prevent children from making it to breeding age. Without the natural selection of death before reproductive maturity, what is evolution.

Another issue with continued evolution is that as humans we seem to cheerish conformity, to the point that if someone is born with six fingers or some other new development, they are often cosmetically fixed to appear and function as a normal human, e.g. the sixth finger is fused or removed. Therefore, we would never have the chance to see the advantage of the extra digit play out it's influence on the reproductive capabilities of its possesor.

It is particularly important to think about these issues in the age of genetic engineering, cloning and experimentation, as we are going to be able to control evolution on a much more precise level. If we continue to block and ignore scientific inquiry in those directions, by asserting that evoltion is fiction and creating laws to stop genetic research on cloning as the right wing christian conservatives would have it, then we are going to have a situation where our children sit home and pray for a miracle to stop "evolution" while other societies create superhumans and begin the claim their position, as the next evolutionary phase. I often think that the idea of blocking evolution in school is to prevent the development of scientists interested in genetic engineering.

In our lifetimes, we will most likely see evolution from a totally different perspective, with genetic capitalism at play. Within our lifetimes the techology will exist to choose if you kid has strong legs or blond hair. In my opinion, designer babies, the avenue where evolution meets capitalism will be the biggest test of evolutionary theory to ever happen. I think at that point we will also most likely see the major fork in the road for hardcore capitalist conservatives and the christian right which right now are often united.

I for one am totally excited about this. I mean nothing else is natural any more. I am not half as excited as I am about the opportunity to become a cyborg but I am still exicted. I mean I can see how it could be horrible and that the rich and powerful will only beco
me more beautiful and healthy but I still think it is an exciting step toward controlling our destiny. If only it could be dealt with, within a more egalitarian government structure and society - it could have potential. Though maybe not even then.

I have more to say about this, but I doubt anyone will even read this far. What do you guys think. I had also talked about this before a bit here [inlink]paul,3433[/inlink].
