Fedora 14 is out

Fedora 14 is here and yes, they did use that awful backdrop (e:paul,52182). No matter how much they tried to change it, it sucked.
On the boot screen they faded it out enough to make it not noticable.

But on the login screen it is in your face bad.

The best part I have found so far is this new suggestive installer. When I try and run something I do not have installed it suggests I install it. I don't know how this slipped past all of the other reviews I found.

Fedora 14 Release Date Approaching

It seems almost hard to believe but Fedora 14's release date is just around the corner on 11-02-2010. It got pushed back a little bit but not by much. The final release candidate should be out by the 19th. It seems like just yesterday that Fedora 13 came out. I love the pace at which Fedora moves. Everytime they refresh it is like getting a new computer.

The feature set is enumerated here . I already upgraded to Netbeans 6.9 on Fedora 13 so thats no as exciting as it could be. I am so curious how the default desktop background turned out - I hope it progressed from (e:paul,52182)

I used to hate evolution

But since Fedora 13 and davmail I am starting to love it as it is working great with exchange 2007. Evolution even caught me when I forget an attachment.

Ktouch

I feel like such a loser that after about 20 years of typing constantly I still never use my pinky fingers. I decided to do something about it and learn to type properly once and for all. I installed ktouch, which is a Linux KDE touch typing tutorial application.

image

Unfortunately my package manager bundled it with a whole bunch of other children's crap.

On the other hand I have logo again. I always loved that turtle.

Pyroom

Hey (e:tinypliny,52765) I found a Q10 replacement that is available in fedora. Its called pyroom and I have a feeling they had Q10 in mind when designing or that they both have a common parent. Its so funny all of these systems look like the terminal prompt I spend most of the day in. This is native and much better as it does not jerk you out when you save. Sorry no typewriter noise but I bet that could be added if needed.

From the command like type sudo yum install pyroom at the terminal or just open up the package manager and search for pyroom to install. It puts an icon in the office folder under applications. ctrl+p for preference settings.

PDF-XChange Viewer on fedora 13

While there may be alternatives, you do not need on. I have pdf xchange viewer running on linux natively using wine.

image

Install wine using fedora package manager (System->Administration->add remove software).

Search wine and install (A Windows 16/32/64 bit emulator) if it is not already installed.

Then download the installer for PDF Xchange and run the installer like normal. Because i don't normally run this software, I can't tell you how good it works. Its seems to be stable to me though. Hopefully, (e:tinypliny,52765) can give you more info.

It should make a shortcut on the desktop. You can drag that to the panel at the top of the screen if you prefer.

The fedora 14 wallpaper contest winning concept

I am going to start out and admit I am a total jerk for complaining now and at the same time not not realizing that this was going on before and participating by either designing or voting.

I especially hate that I did not vote because the wining design is such crap and it only won with 9 votes. Not like ahead by 9 votes but won with 9 votes. Seriously, like almost no one voted. The fact that it was made with blender, a open source 3d program should be a plus for an open OS, but I think the fact that it is so freakin basic, intro to 3D 101, that it will not only look bad for fedora, but bad for blender as well.

With only 9 votes, anyone and their 10 friends could have won.

Here is the link to the fedora wiki page about it with some of the other designs.

image

They are calling for designers to help turn it into the final wallpaper for the distribution but I think it is hopeless. I tried playing around with it and I can't find a way to work it in and not have it look like crap. Hopefully, some more brilliant designer can. Then again only a handful submitted and almost no one voted in the first place, ugh. I wish they could just have a revote.

This was the final design for the default for Fedora 13. Its hard to tell at this size but there were lots of stars.
image

I guess to be honest Linux is all about doing your own thing, so I am sure most people will switch wallpapers. Here is to hoping that someone can take that concept and make something salvageable out of it.

I like the fedora 13 one enough that I even use it on my nexus one.

android 2.2 and fedora 13 tethering

Of course the wifi tethering is easy to use but sometimes you don't want wifi on in order to save battery or you want to charge your phone while tehtering. In that case tethered USB tethering is better and its as easy as plugging in an Ethernet cable is. You simple turn on USB tethering in your tethering and portable hot spot settings panel on the android device an plug it in via USB. Fedora auto detects the connection and connects. No settings - all magic.

Fedora 13 function keys and 3g usb

Well the best part was the verizon dongle. I plugged it in, it detected it and asked me which network I use, I chose verizon, hit apply and it was good to go. I didn't even enter in my credentials which seems kind of crazy but they might be stored on the dongle itself.

The one thing I had a hard time figuring out was how to set the function keys to be function keys and not media keys by default. I did not want to have to hit the fn key to get F1-F16.

Just sudo edit the /sys/module/hid_apple/parameters/fnmode

1 = media mode default
2 = function key default
