Written vs Verbal Communication

I had an interesting conversation with a person who is very adept at business level interpersonal communication, so I thought I would share it with you all.

She told me the reason that verbal communication is preferred, is that it isn't recorded like written communication. An email can be forwarded or saved forever and bite you back but a phone coversation or better yet personal meeting fades with memory.

I guess that's preety good advice but seeing as I record my whole life, nothing should ever fade till the alzheimers is so bad I lose short terms memory.

I also thought about the fact that I have (yes, unethically) recorded numerous phone conversations and face to face conversations on various digital devices and wonder if she was talking into account the increased collection of data in the era of personal digital devices.

Either way, it's something to think about. If it's questionable say it with as few digital devices near you as possible, best idea is to meet someone at a nudist colony or a have a swim meeting at the lake, lol.

I am such a freaking loser

Nothing sucks more than being a loser careerwise. Maybe it really is time to split from this city although I really don't want to. I am so tired of feeling like a loser. I went to get my old job back today and it turned out something had to change because the two classes they were going to have me teach were at the same time, argh. So now I am going to end up being a lab technician while teaching the Advanced Programming class this semester.

Then I get home and they are tarring the parking area in our backyard, so everything smells like cancer.

Night at the Clam Bar

I went to the clambar with (e:matthew) . I was looking at my journal from last June [inlink]paul,981[/inlink] and we went then too. (e:hodown) said she might make a donation to the server slush fund. I need $144.00 to get the connection setup. After that it's 104.00 per month but we already pay $59.00 for internet and $40.00 for server space, so maybe its not much more. It depends if it includes a phone number. If it does I am sold because having home access to the server will mean speed and easy development/backup.

lwist: ok. gotta go. see ya in a couple weeks!
lwist: lwist signed off at 11:32 pm.

Everything (e:twisted) will be out of my life for a bit, till she is back from vacation. I am going to die or have a thesis when it's done.

Pride and Traffic

It is nice to see traffic arriving in from other places on the web. I promised myself that I would not program this afternoon at all and just leave the site alone. Let's see if that can still happen!! If anyone visiting the site from afar wants to hire me or chat about the site, feel free to shoot me a postit or an email, using the icons under my userPic. You can visit my portfolio to read more about the user's interface and about site features, although it has been upgraded a bunch since that was written.

Right now I am working for $17,000/year with no health insurance and it can't be hard to beat that for a PHP (OOP), MySQL, XML, AJAX, WAP, DHTML programmer and graphic designer/ hard worker.

Well today is another pride parade and festival. It should be fun, as are all elmwood events. It is weird not being able to view it from the porch this year. I was so used to living on elmwood. Now we have to walk.

Man on the floor

Geoffrey [inlink]paul,2491[/inlink] knocked some guy out giving him a massage in our living room. I don't really know him and he is snoring. Geoffrey thinks it would be funny to decorate him with flowers. The kid is the same guy in (e:flacidness) 's journal [inlink]flacidness,113[/inlink]

Lots of Stuff

I have so much to do. I have letters to write still, a thesis to write, a new server to find, etc. I can;'t believe a whole day slipped by without me updating. I was still recovering from the weekend.

servers
I am sick of service that isn't stable. Sometimes it is so fast, sometime it is so slow. There is no way for me to test anything when the conditons are so variable. I am going to get my own server very soon. I just need to cover the $144 start up fee. Then it is $104/month which is essentially the same cost that I am paying for adelphia at home $59.99 + the server I am using now $39.95. The difference being that I can have the server running at home which would make life much more fun, but would require that I have it running 24/7. Imagine being able to backup a server with an external hardrive instead of FTP. It isn't that important for most sites, but when you cross into the GB range, it become a must. Plus, I can develop without having to ever upload changes. I predict it would save me somewhere around 10-15 hours a week.

soyeon
Soyeon, contacted me to get her old journals back, apparently when she pressed erase some 300 times she forgot to save a copy. I was really weirded out to get an IM from her, let alone one asking for a favor. I found all the ones up to the month she deleted them. I was going to give them to her nicely, but then I changed my mind because I remember how annoying she was and didn't feel like I owed her anything. Maybe, I would sell them to her, maybe not.

Apple
Apple is lame. [inlink]nicholas,67[/inlink] I could have told anyone that their processors sucked. Doesn't it make you sick that it was all a lame advertising propaganda campaign that made you pay more for the laptop processor that sucks. I had a powerbook for years. I had a bunch of them up to the Powerbook G4. They all sucked and they were all hot. Then I got a centrino, it was amazing, great battery life, fast speed, quiet fan. I love it. It has been two years now that I have been happy. And now that apple is just a pretty "skin" will Apple sell Mac OS X for other intel based computers?

My MFA Degree - My Job

I finally got my letter accepting me as a graduation Candidate for 9/05. I also checked my final grades and it looks like I am going to be graduating with a 4.0. So now I am finishing a 60 credit Masters in Fine Arts, I have a huge portfolio full of great stuff , and years of experience.

It was definately worth it because I just accepted my dream job making $17,000/year at Canisius with no health benefits. It's about the same amount they paid me when I had only a undergraduate degree in German Language. Ironically, school cost more than that. They told me once again it might go full time in January. I am a sucker for stories aparently. They told me that one for four years now. I guess there is still hope the salary could go up.

It's sad because I had planned on using the money I made working full time and reinvesting it in this site. I just want it to be on a fast server so that my years of programming can be fully appreciated. I guess it will have to wait another year.

The reason this happend to me is because I don't want to work for some big corporation and I don't want to have to leave my home town. Where are all the non-profits that need designers and web techs. The going bid is $17,001, at this point, lol. Please someone rescue me before it is too late, I am truly capable of making anything happen on the web.
