e:poetry was great

Tonight I got to present my latetest edition of the poetry toolkit and the results that I got using it for the site. If you haven't seen it click on the epoetry link in the search box.

All the words in the poems now link back to the site search engine. One of the arguments against hypertext in epoetry was that it didn't really offer the reader a deeper look into the text. In this case I have overcome that by having the actual words link to searches of the journals, so that you can follow each words back to its orginal context, as well as, explore more about the author of that phrase. Not only that but, because its local you could meet the author, or at least contact them through email or IM. What would you say, "I liked the poem you wrote." They wouldn't have any idea. It really brings more meaning to the phrase, "You're a poet and you didn't know it."

I am coining this reality e-poetry in case I already havent. Jesse is in the class too which is great. My code can't write poems about him because he deleted himself everytime he wrote. He is my idol anyways - especially s ince I learned that he has his breakfast delivered!

Wednesday

Time for a day filled with meetings and chair shopping. Does anyone know where to buy those funky chairs you kind of lean foward and kneel on. I want to buy one but Office Max only had a crappy one and after my [search]"butterfly conservatory"[/search] butterfly conservatory drama, I am not planning on going to Canada to check out ikea. Then off to digital poetics class where I can demonstrate my newest poems.

I am almost about done with the grading module for the teaching sites. If you see the may grades link in your user link list - don't ' freak out. It is just a test of the emergency grading system.

My Bath Tub

The new mansion has the best sitting style bathtub ever. Unfortunately, there was not enough hot water to fill it so I had to carry a pot of boiling water up the staircase.

Video Chat

Someday, when enough people donate to the site (hint), I will be able to launch the video chat program that I already constructed and is ready to go. It basically just needs me to be able to afford a license for the server. Here is (e:soyeon) and I videochatting.

Consumer Version of the trip

So after you finsih touring the butterfly conservatory, they have the traditional gift shop that accompanies any natural wonder type museum. They had everythign from amgnets to mounted butterfly, to butterfly, kits, teeshirts, playdoh, stuffed animals, purses, pens, anything basically.

My new favorite habit is taking pcture of stuff instead of buying it. It kind of make steh sidekick pay for itself and satifies my collecting urge without having to actually buy anything. Sometimes I wonder if this could help my mother through her sales addiction!

I see it as similiar to collecting pokemon.

It was even worse at the border on the way back thanks to officer Kartychak and his gang. I have never been so harrassed in my life. They searched the car, made us fill out forms, asked us tons of questions about how we knew each other, where I worked, what I did, why - who's car it was, etc. When I finally asked them what the problem was Officer Kartychak atcually replied in the most condescending way, "It is just a little weird that three grown men want to go to a butterfly conservatory togther, isn't it?" Which he basically cleary meant to translate to, "Shut the fuck up faggot."

image

Even the other boarder guard looked at him weird when he said it. Then I decided to copy down the number for complaints and comments and the other guard asked if I need to speak with anyone. I will, just wait.

Butterflies

The butterfly conservatory is pretty cool. The minute we got there, one landed on (e:terry). They really get all over you.

Butterfly conservatory

(e:matthew) , (e:terry) and I are at the butterfly conservatory in Niagara Falls today. The border guard (angry lesbian) gave us the hardest time ever. How did we know each other, what jobs do we have, have we ever been arrested, why do we want to go see the butterflys? It was actually insulting.

Inlink Bug Fixed, Glass in My Bed

(e:twisted) and I have been doing bug fixes and recoding like mad in order to get everytheing ready for the open house in Alameda coming up. Today, I finally beat her to finding a long standing bug. The inlink link was opening up a second site window plus the epad. It is really just supposed to open the epad with the inlink pasted inside. Now it works again. Hopefully people won't be afraid of the inlink button anymore, lol. The real reason I found it is because I wanted to concur with (e:angryshortkid) 's post [inlink]angryshortkid,8[/inlink]. I feel like that type of salesperson and their salestand are the equivalent to commercial spider webs.

Glass in My Bed
I also found that the reason I keep waking up with all these bloody cuts is not because I am scratching myself or even trying to kill myself subconsciously, but because there was a little piece of broken glass in my bed. It had been going on for like four days and this morning, when it cut me - it hurt so bad I woke up and found it. It was so tiny and clear but sharp enough to cut. I am guessing it is from when Jeffrey and (e:terry) broke the green goblet during the dance party.

Parents

I was checking up on (e:jasonsback) shoetif post when iI noticed the snoop dogg [inlink]jason,73[/inlink] post. It is so funny, mike [inlink]mike,296[/inlink] wrote something really similar last week about my dad. How is it that snoop manages to transcend the generational gap. he must have really good marketing agents.

My two thousand ascii characters

[inlink]jason,72[/inlink]
Being admitted to grad school is no indication of any sort of intelligence. It basically means you can jump through hoops, fill out paperwork, and write basic english sentences. I can guarantee you of that. I think it used to mean a lot more. Along the same lines, this is probably why an undergraduate degree is now about equivalent to a high school degree in our parents generation.

I know this will kill you (e:jasonisback) but sometimes if students don't aggree with the material being presented they shouldn't be taking that class. The teacher obviously has an agenda which the school felt qualified enough to warrant them teaching a class about it. When students remain challenging to these positions it often disrupts the learning of others, who are perhaps already in concensus and would like to explore the topic further. (e:shoetif) , I am not suggesting this is your situation at all.

Good Example
I have witnessed this in a biology class in SC once where the teacher was teaching evolution and the creationist student had to keep challenging it. For the other students, as well as, for the teacher it became quite annoying as we could never move past the basic tennents of evolution without constantly going over how it was only one posiiton and that other people believe that god created all the humans the way they are. That ends up being really unfair to students who accept the idea and want to learn more about the specifics. At least that was a general biology class so it is possible that the student had to take it. But "queer theory" is for sure not on anyones required class list.

Does anyone rememeber Leo from Trebor's Screen tehory class. I can't remeber the specifics of why he "left" / "was removed" but it was similar to this.

Here is also an email I received on the mailing list for media studies. It seems like liberal arts like english and media studies, etc is generally the wrong place for someone who is right leaning, at least at UB - although I have yet to see a conservative liberal arts program. Here is an email sent by one of the full-time faculty to the media studies grad list.

> Politics in the New Media Classroom

As part of: WebCamTalk 1.0

* Introduction:

Thinking about educators some may argue that there is no room for the
personal politics of the professor in the classroom. We disagree. The Greek
word "professore" means " to proclaim." It does not mean "say nothing, look
the other side when thousands die in Iraq, when civil liberties vanish under
the Patriot Act, academic freedom of speech is questioned, or when the
International Monetary Fund ruins yet another Jamaica.
