Soda Ban? Article for ?Tinypliny?

So Even before I read this article I thought Hey a bet if (e:tinypliny) is on the internet this is an article she would find interesting now I have to read it... But not only her anyone who thinks about health and how we have a right to drink what we want but maybe there should be a tax on bad stuff... Or maybe the government shouldn't subsidize corn?

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg plans to propose a far-reaching municipal ban on sales of large-size sugary beverages by restaurants, mobile food carts, movie theaters and delis, his administration said on Wednesday.
A document outlining the proposal said it was aimed at fighting an epidemic of obesity, citing public health statistics showing that 58 percent of New York City adults and nearly 40 percent of city public school students are obese or overweight.
The proposal defines sugary drinks as beverages that are "sweetened with sugar or another caloric sweetener that contain more than 25 calories per 8 fluid ounces and contains less than 51 percent milk or milk substitute by volume as an ingredient."

It would impact drinks sold in containers larger than 16 ounces, but would not impact the sale of diet soda or dairy-based drinks.
Americans consume 200 to 300 more calories every day than they did 30 years ago, according to the Bloomberg administration's analysis.
Bloomberg has used the power of the city government to promote other health measures, including a campaign to cut down on salt and a ban on trans fats in restaurant food, as well as a requirement that chain restaurants display calorie counts.

In 2003, the city banned smoking in bars and restaurants, generating howls of protest at the time from smokers and non-smokers who saw it as a case of government creeping into private lives, but the law has since become widely accepted.
Bloomberg, a political independent, is in the middle of his third four-year term as New York City mayor.
The response to Bloomberg's public health initiatives have been mixed. Earlier this month, a Quinnipiac University poll found that 45 percent of New York voters thought the government should discourage unhealthy eating and drinking habits, while 48 percent said the government shouldn't get involved.
Still, many of those initiatives, including the smoking ban, have become models for other cities.
The proposed ban on sugary drinks requires the approval of the city's Board of Health. It will be submitted to the board on June 12.

In a statement, a spokesman for the New York City Beverage Association challenged Bloomberg's assertion that the consumption of soda was driving obesity rates.
"It's time for serious health professionals to move on and seek solutions that are going to actually curb obesity," said spokesman Stefan Friedman. "These zealous proposals just distract from the hard work that needs to be done on this front."

For anyone who reads me Do you think the box or " " bubble is a better way to read something.... I kinda think that the box is but not sure....

So here is my question what will the movies sell for you to drink now? Also I wonder flavored water might be pretty close to this... Now lets say they just cut the size of the soda will anyone get the big popcorn anymore?

The little bit of an issue I Have with this though is that it acts like Diet Pop is ok.... Not that I'm going to fund it... But it would be interesting to look into how Diet pop and regular pop by brand of course very ..... They do taste different but most diet pop doesn't toss out the sugar they use some fake stuff and hasn't all that fake stuff been found like it does damage to you if the pop is left out in the back of the truck bed on a hot day......

Also though this doesn't address the real issue... As some comedian said have you ever noticed the only people drinking diet Soda are fat? In other words it doesn't work... See what often happens is people think oh it is diet so I can have more of it.... Also some people think oh I'll get this huge meal and oh a diet soda...don't want to get full or anything or they think that like counters the bad stuff.....

Everyone thinks I look like Jesus... So this lady comes up and because of the resemblance gives me a card..... In any event....

Battleship +

So Not saying that the last time I went to the movies was on 2-12 but it might have been since that is my last post in this category .... Part of that is there are so many shows I like on and plus the Many shows on sunday nights and the lovely DVR.... Plus with wrestling PPV's and trying to keep up...... Plus sports like Friday night I went to the bisons game... Not really time to post pix today so that will be a sunday thing.... Hoping it isn't over 3 months till my next shows... But it is that crazy season Next weekend is Pride Buffalo... Weekend after that is The Artfestival....... Think I have those dates right....

First movie I went to go see Was Men In Black in 3D.... I liked the other 2 and if Memory serves there is one thing that story wise doesn't make sense...But it was fun and at points I could feel the movement in the movie and it was pretty cool how 3D not really sure but fun time....

So the movie ended at just the right time to see The Dictator.... I enjoyed that crazy movie it was great and funny.....

So after that I figured that was it... But as I left I checked the Times and Yes I could see Battleship....And yes there is stuff at the end of the credits kinda like how they had stuff during the credits of the Dictator but different.... This was a fun movie.... But also this being memorial day this was a great time to see a Navy Movie where they battle Aliens... Good times....

2012 Hospice Walk

So today was the hospice walk.. Some people do really go all out they have teams and writing on their shirts over even printed pictures... To me though that isn't my style... They have like whom you are walking in memory and again I don't really follow that.. See we are walking to give them money for like others... Who if they don't need it now will.... But again I'm not like everyone else.... So here are a bunch of photos that mostly will look like Downtown Buffalo....

Now I should say that this walk was my mother's Idea I had never heard of it... Yes it is because of my dad that we now of hospice... But to say I walk in his memory isn't really correct... Of course you do remember that person and the tributes people do are nice.... But the walk helps new people......

2012 May Skiffle

So Yesterday was the first Friday of the Month so off to see the Skiffle Minstrels ....

But for anyone who reads me 2 things first.. Sorry I didn't vote at all in the artvoice thing... I never got around to it...Opps ... Now what got me thinking about that is how tasty they make a burger there.... Now the second thing is a question and a few pix after it...

1. Should Burger king have a garbage right by the bus stop?
2. Should NFTA have them at all Shelters?
3. Or maybe buffalo can be like a real City like Toronto and have pickups all year round on the sidewalks maybe even re-cycle ?

New Store Article

So I admit I haven't had much to say lately.... But ah that is ok I guess... Soon summer will be here and there will be photos from all kinds of events I assume... Would be fun though if I had a cellphone. Then I could post a pix here and figure out how to share from here to twitter .... I also haven't got into the teachers thing cause arrgh.....

Oh yeah the link up there leads to a buffalo news story about a place that opened that some might be interested in... At the least someone might want to go on a Grant St. Run like people do on the strip?

Tiny store is life-changing for city’s Bhutanese refugees

Today’s grand opening of a tiny store on Grant Street near Forest Avenue on the city’s West Side may go unnoticed by most, but it’s life-changing for Kaji Sunwar and the emerging Bhutanese Nepali community in Buffalo.

Just four years after arriving from Nepal, Sunwar is now a proud business owner. And his new store, Sagarmatha Groceries, is a little corner of the city that his countrymen can call their own.

They owe thanks to some enterprising college students and a local company that also got its start as a small business on the West Side.

“My thinking was when I got to America I would do anything — washing, cleaning, anything,” Sunwar said on Friday. “I never thought I’d have a store.”

The idea for the store began with the Students in Free Enterprise program at Canisius College.

SIFE, as it’s known, is a nonprofit student organization — with chapters worldwide — that creates business projects to better local communities.

The Canisius chapter, which has a few dozen students, wanted to work with the refugee population and came up with a student-managed micro-loan program for small-business startups.

Rich Products, which has long been involved with the student organization, liked the idea and backed it with $30,000.

“Over 65 years ago, Rich’s began as a small business on the West Side,” said Howard Rich, vice president of community relations. “We are thrilled for the opportunity to give back to the community that supported us.”

Once the student group got to know those in the refugee community, it quickly became clear that Sunwar would be their first prospective businessman, said Patricia Hutton, a professor of economics and finance at Canisius, who serves as SIFE adviser.

“He’s educated, he speaks English fluently and he knows everybody in the community,” Hutton said.

Sunwar, 32, was born in Bhutan, a country in South Asia nestled between India and China, where his father was a member of the royal guard and the family lived on the palace grounds.

But when the king’s father-in- law found out the family was Christian, they were told to worship at the Buddhist temple or leave the kingdom. They left.

For years, Sunwar was in a refugee camp in Nepal, where he went to school and lived in a 13-by-19-foot tent with his parents, sister and four younger brothers.

His father’s construction job helped pay to send Sunwar to college in India, where he earned a master’s in business administration. He returned to Nepal and worked as a teacher to help send his brothers to college.

In 2007, Sunwar went to an office of the United Nations refugee agency to apply for resettlement. In May 2008, Sunwar and his entire family were resettled in Buffalo by Catholic Charities.

“I never thought in my life I’d be an American,” Sunwar said. “It is amazing.”

In fact, Sunwar thought Hutton was kidding him when she discussed the opportunity to open his own business.

But the Canisius student organization — led by Miguel Lopez, Briana Miller, Brianne Victor and Elena Popova—helped him write a business plan. Then, they stuck with him through the process — everything from applying for a city license to buying store shelving.

“Helping someone find their little niche, that was an interest to me,” Lopez said. “I wanted Kaji to be that person to help his community grow. He can be an inspiration to other people.”

Sunwar opened the doors to the store at 489 Grant St. a couple of weeks ago. As he repays the low-interest loan, that money will be used for more small-business loans to other refugees.

“I can’t express my thanks to them,” Sunwar said, “They have done a great, great job for me and my community.”

Since Sunwar arrived in Buffalo, hundreds more Bhutanese refugees have followed and settled on the West Side.

They often hop a bus to an Asian market in Amherst to get their traditional spices and foods, so the opening of Sunwar’s neighborhood store will make it much easier.

The shelves are stocked with specialty products, ranging from chili pickle to hard cheese from Nepal to beaded necklaces made by women in the local Bhutanese Nepali community. Toward the back, there are used books for people to borrow. More than a store, it’s a place for the Bhutanese to gather, to socialize.

Sunwar, meanwhile, has a day job, but the rest of his family will pitch in to help run the store. He’s hopeful.

“This will work,” Sunwar said. “This will be a good business and I can make it.”

I chose box instead of " " since I think it is a better way of reading it? Also I admit Canisius send me all kinds of stuff we want money... I never give.. But if they had a way [maybe I just don't know about it] to give money just to this part and not on what ever (basketball/football team) they want to spend it on I think I would give....

2 Things I forgot
A. Yes this story is a bit for (e:tinypliny) but then I thought about the fact that on this site there is a big Canisius Connection ... Now if people take that as a positive or negative in their life is up to them.....

B. There are and have been refugees who live right by me... But they don't really talk to me (What would we talk about anyways) now I don't know what country they are from but maybe this might help them?

Whitney Glee

So Tonight on Glee it is the Music of Whitney Houston not sure how she spell her last name so.... The first thing I wonder is when the show was written? The point being was it an idea before her death.... Meaning that it is a tribute the her music and not her and not what she did.... I also wonder if her death changed any songs or store lines or anything like that... Should be good tonight we shall see.....

But this brings up the question of drugs and how people think she ruined her life.... I don't think she did... I think she died doing what she loves... Yes it is sad for the family she left behind... Yes she was an Addict but guess what everyone that goes to Happy Hour after work to take the edge of before they go home is also... Now she died with drugs in her system but drowned.... I just hope she passed out then drowned and it wasn't like she knew she was but couldn't move cause that would be awefull .... But I say that she loved the drugs more then her family.....

Now I'm sure most people would say no she is addicted.... Yes addiction is very real and it does destroy many lives... But it is a choice also... If you want to do a line of blow, or take some club drugs when you go dancing... or what ever you can get addicted that is the chance you take with any drug...

Now Then why doesn't rehab work.... Well for many the addiction is to strong... But for all the famous people we see in the news it is because they don't want to stop they don't want to change... But they are forced into it... But they are happy.... Then they get sober and I don't buy that they think they are better off now.... Well maybe they do...... It all depends on the person.... At some point they may go ok want to change my life I don't like what this drug is doing to me... But so often they love it and like it .... But sometimes by the time they decide to change the damage is done....

In this case that is why I feel happened to Whitney she lost her voice... So once that happened what is the choice......

I remember working with someone years ago who said her Aunt Dione Warwick was a big coke head... I can't confirm it but it would make sense...

In any event she had amazing music and looking forward to glee... I think the drug issue won't be touched cause it is about the music but who knows?
