The cost of estrip this month

Holy crap. My first FIOS bill from Verizon to serve estrip came today and it is $321!!

That is for one month and some weeks of service, plus setup fee, plus router, plus taxes. It looks like it will be about $115.00/month. So if anyone wants to/can donate that would be awesome as I pay for that all out of pocket. You can donate by clicking on the donate link above the userpics to the right.

The move is complete

The new server is now running over at (e:fing)'s It should be much faster than before. Tell me if you notice anything weird.

Now that I pay $100/month for estrip.org you all should entertain me with more journals or donate.

Estrip Downtime on thursday

There might be some downtime for estrip.org on tuesday. I am going to be moving to server from Artvoice to a private residence on a new business FIOS acct I opened for estrip. This might cause some downtime depending how I end up doing the DNS switchover.

Don't worry - nothing will go be lost - the server is just physically moving locations.

Question for the peeps?

Does anyone have any interest in me moving their loudfeeder podcast over to the new server? Did anyone even use it? Same with gather, does anyone have anything important in there or can I just start fresh when i eventually port a new version of those packages?

One step close to the new site

The newest surebert toolkit is ready but not public yet. However, this means the new server is one step close to launching. I have had it on since I got it, and I am happy to report it is running perfectly - no lemon here. I still can't believe the deal we got.

The New Server Arrives

It finally came today and it seems pretty great. I am going to keep it here a bit and install and test and upgrade, then soon I will swap old the old server and we will be on the new one. Thank you everyone who helped make this possible.

I still can't believe the specs - 2x dual core 3.0 ghz, 2x73 hardware raided 15k drives, 1333mhz front side bus, 4GB of ram, redundant power supply, dual nics.

It was in perfect shape.

It is so quiet that honestly, I think our Xbox is louder.

I can't believe I got it for ~$1800 considering its cost for the same exact specs if I bought it on the Dell site right now $6,000+

I transfered ownership on the Dell website for the warranty and service plan which runs through 2010.

Bought the New Server - $1869

We got us a Dell 1950 server with:
2 x 73GB 15k SAS drives Raid - upgradeable to 1TB
2 x 3.0 GHz dual core xeons - upgradeable to Quad core
4GB ram - upgradeable up to 32GB
1333 mhz front size bus
redundant power
RHEL certified
Small form factor - although as Ajax pointed out this doesn't matter for us, unless we are in a rack someday.

4 hours of onsite service from dell before Jan 2008
4 more hours of onsite service from dell before jan 2010
gold service warranty till 2010

Best of all it all comes from one place to my house and I already paid for it. With shipping it came to $1,869. Selling the vaio laptop for (e:ladycroft) or (e:drew) will defray the cost. If anyone else didn't donate and still wants to, feel free - I am going to leave the message up for a bit.

Okay I think I need a little more

I think I underestimated the price a little bit. So we are back to 78.9%. I could buy a cheaper supermicro server and hope for the best as it is not certified for Centos 5 and has no warranty, or spend a little more and get a used, certified centos compatible server with a 2 year warranty and drives in it already. The dell server is definitely something that would work for a long time.

The difference, however, is me spending another $462 dollars.

At least we won't need a windows license!

If anybody still wants to donate, now is the time. I might just have to pay for it up front as the auction ends in 13 hours!

Also, if anyone want to buy my old Vaio s360 cuteass laptop (e:paul,31660) I am willing to part with it for $500 to make up the extra money. It is still a great computer. It was around $2000 when I got it less than 2 years ago.

On the other hand I might just go ahead and risk it on another supermicro ,that is what we have right now. But what if it doesn't work, it owuld be such a waste of money.
