WAP support and userPic/Snd updates

In case you hadn't read it anywhere else, you can now access some site feature from a WAP enable cell phone. This includes hundreds of models of cell-phones with text based browsers. Currently you can see how many people and who is online, as well as, a list of the last 12 updates and read them.

I also updated the userSound and userPic upload functions. There should be no more problem with browser caches, etc. Test it out and upload a new userPic or userSound today.

No more IE for Mac X support

As of this afternoon I will be discontinuing all support of IE on Mac. I am sorry if anyone is effected by this, but I do not have time to keep up with that most archane browser.

IE is not longer even supported by Microsoft as it has been disctinued as a Microsoft Product since the advent of Safari. I would like to look at it as the beginning of the end of the Microsoft browser monopoly in gerneal.

Users of Mac OS X should have no fear about inaccesibilty to our site. There are many other MAC OS X browser options, including apple's own built in and much more standards compliant named browser Safari, as well as, Netscape, and most importantly firefox .

Firefox is the the premier browser choice for viewing elmwoodstrip.com. It has many features that are not avaiable on other browsers. These currently include live bookmarks (rss style), and an estrip search plugin, so that you can search our site right from your browser toolbar, just as you would with google.

Buffalo News Photo Day

Robert Kirkham, a Buffalo News Photographer came to take my picture today for the link section article about web pages. I think it will run on the 27th of Spetember, but no guarantees. Robert was a great guy. He even gave me a quick lesson about film speed.

I imagine this will dirve a lot more traffic to the site which is already growing leaps and bounds in the last couple of weeks.

On a totally different note, if anyone wants to donate money toward the anticpated expansion of server space that will be required soon, please feel free to click on the donate button. Currently, (e:matthew) (e:terry) , and I are paying for it all and any donations would be appreciated. The donations can be made using paypal (secure) which I believe accepts all kinds of cards, bank transfers, checks, etc. If you click on the link it will take you to a paypal page with our site information filled out.

17 guests, 5 peeps

Wow, when I started this journal there were 5 peeps and 17 guests online. Now there are 6 peeps and 8 guests. The numbers are so high. It seems to be really growing. I guess I can't work on the live site anymore!!

RSS feedback

Here is the situation the rss which now includes images and line returns using HTML markup. This irritates the hell out me, because I feel that it is leaving the original point of rss, simple syndicated news text and replacing it with little web page feeds. Why not just visit the site if you want style and images, right? Well, a bunch of people have asked me for the images. This leads to the problem where I have to put the entire entry text into CDDATA to blog it from being validated. Those of you that understand this, what do you think?

I mean it is convenient to have the rss feed serve the images, but then having HTML markup in the feed makes it not as "tasty" for others to syndicate. Mmind you other people are doing this all over. For example boingBoing.net, my favorite news on rss at

They even use styles and css. Should I have two feeds?

Busy with Updates

I have been working on more of the behind the scenes stuff on the site. Thanks to some bug reports from (e:sqb) , I decided to work on the rss feeds.

The feeds are now rss 2.0 compliant, have the proper links, and proper time. Ialso added parapgraph returns and images as requested by (e:chris) and his sidekick.

(e:sqb)

Thanks, Paul...I like the new "preview" mode with images and returns but for some reason the entries in my reader are all off by +1 hour.

What reference do you use to code for RSS?

- mike
