Major Search Engine Update

I re-wrote the search engine for the site. You will now get much more accurate results and all words in the search will be highlighted in the entry.

To do this, simply search for something and copy the whole address into your journal.

How it looks in July 04

The site has changed so much since this time last year and even more since its inception in March of 2003. I decided I should start taking screen captures because a lot of the progress was lost. I have no images from the middle phases of the site.

Here it is now in July of 2004 for future reference.
image

Here we have early spring 2004 - unfortunately, I do not have a screen capture of the elmwood site from that time but I do have a screen capture of the tempreal (another project of mine) site from that time which used the same code and looked very similar.

image

This is what it the header looked like in winter 2003, but I forgot to get a screen shot, so I can't show you any content, etc.

image

Everything before winter 03 and these really old spring 03 shots is also missing. I still have the code and sql on CD. Maybe I will upload it all sometime and take a look. I can tell you that it involved a background which looked like a notepad and had a brown and orange color scheme.

Here are some screen shots from March 2003.

Here are larger versions of these images.

Code Updates

I have updated a huge section of the code tonight. So if you ntoice any problems please email me (e:paul) so that I can resolve them. The site should be significantly faster in terms of the code, but I can't promise anything on server performance as that is out of my hands.

One big change is that when you make a drawing and press post, the drawing box closes and the drawing code is inserted into the text box on your journal instead of in the pop-up-window.

Has anyone Listened to the radio yet?

If you have sucessfully listened to the radio, can you please post about it so I know it worked for everyone?

Also, has anyone tried or at least seen the (audio) chat or A/v profiler? The a/v profiler is found in your control panel. It lets you leave audio/video messages on the site. The icon looks like a microphone.

The audio chat can be found in the chat window where you see the word (audio). Both the a/v profiler and the (audio) chat require the flash 7 plugin.

I sent another mailing out

I send out another email using the update/info list. If you wish to unsubscribe from it, simply reply with the subject unsubscribe. Oops, i just realized I messed that up so you will have to wait till the next one to unsubscribe.

I will only be using it to alert you of new features as they become avaiable.

Here is a copy of the email below for those of you that do not belong to the site yet. You can see what you are missing. Which is a lot by the way. When you log in much more becomes avaiable to you.

There are lots of Updates for the site.

RADIO - We now have better radio integration with the site. If the radio is on, you will see a box under your control panel with a picture of a little radio and the name of the song playing. Click on the song to stream the estrip radio station. I would suggest using iTunes although there are plenty of other players out there.

FLASH CHAT - The flash audio chat also now detects if it is avaiable and displays a little (audio) link in the chat box. Click on the (audio) link to open the flash chat program. The flash audio chat allow you to speak with a microphone when communicating with other chatter.

It is also a realtime type based chat, no more waiting for refreshes.

A/V PROFILER - The AV profiler can be found in your control panel. If the site detects that the flash server is online you will see a little microphone in your control panel. click on it to record audio/video clips with the profiler. It's fun for everybody. I recorded a test one for everyone to see.

RSS Fixed - The rss should now properly display journals with quotations. I also stopped stripping html links and added a little note where media was removed in each entry.

CALENDAR - When you click on the this month's name on th event calendar it now displays every event after today's date in that month. Today's events are highlighed in red.

MAILING LIST FOR JOURNALS - The mailing list for journals is completed and entries now come with all images attached right to the email. The subject is "username - blogTitle" and if you respond to the email, the author receives it.

USER SOUND - User Sounds can now be up to a whopping 250k. They can be in mp3, wav, or mid format.

COMMING SOON: estrip member profiles.

Email List Beta

You can now receive all journals via email. Emailed entries include attached images and drawings. Currently .mp3 and .wav files are removed.

image

If you would like to partcipate in the beta of this service, please email (e:paul) . It is particularly useful for mobile devices such as the t-mobile sidekick or other smartphones that can receive emails with attached photos. If you have such a phone, I would really like to test it with other smartphones besides the t-mobile sidekick.

Each entry comes from the author and you can reply directly to them.

UserSound Size Increase

Check it out. No one ever updates their user sounds. They are a fun way to personalize your journal or leave messages.

image

In order to get people more interested, I am raising the maximum size of the user sounds to 250k. Simply use the control panel that looks like music notes. You can upload sounds in wav, mid, or mp3 format. Have fun.

Re: Calendar Blues

It would be nice if the calendar entries would pop-up in a tooltip (using mouseover)... also, any calendar entries added since the last visit could be colored a different color...

A calendar isn't a bad idea. Of course, is the motherlode of calendars.. it would be nice if there could be a shared calendar for this community. Events happen, and I hear about them afterwards. For example, there was this vegan/vegetarian concert in Ellicott Creek Park, and I heard about it weeks afterwards. Seeing that summer is so short here, I'd like to take full advantage of outdoor events.

Image Library Updates

I updated the image library today to include drawings that you made using the Sketch function. They will now show up in your image library so that you may delete old ones or add them to current or updated journal entries. Hope this helps some of you out there.

For those of you that do not what your image library is, simply click on the img library button at the bottom of your journal entry form. This will bring up a window with previously uploaded images, which you can then view and add to new and updated entries. More detailed nstructions can be foudnd on the image library window itself. Check it out and email paul if you have any questions.
