correction

Well I have a slight correction from yesterdays journal [inlink]metalpeter,447[/inlink] for some reason I got the islanders and rangers mixed up. I knew that the team the Sabers where playing had Miroslav Satan and Alexi Zhitnic (if they are spelled right I would be amazed) but for some reason thought rangers. In any event I watched the begining of the game and saw most of the first period and then I was able to catch the end of the game as well. It is hard to judge it based on one game but the new rules seem to be an improvement so far. We will have to see if they are enforced all season long. I enjoyed what I saw of the game plus the Sabres won so that is an added bonus. I look forward to seeing more games.

Sabres

Tonight is the sabres's opener. They are palying the Rangers at 7pm. I'm going to try and watch some of the game. I like hockey but never watch as much of it as I would like to. The saberes game is on MSG. There was an entire NHL section in todays paper. It went over the rule changes had The TV schedule and complete NHL scedulle and all kinds of information. I didn't read to much of it didn't know where to start. I should have cut out the TV schedule some games are on Ch. 5 candian and then OLN. I wish I was a big enough fan of hockey to get the hockey package. With that package every game is on live from every team. That would be amazing. But for me there are other things I like to watch like 24 and wrestling and going to concerts and Bandits games. I think it will be interesting to see how the new rules effect the game and see if it is more fun to watch.

[inlink]springfaerie,219[/inlink] Go sabres

[inlink]sbrugger,5[/inlink] I have been to a Leafs game it was a lot of fun. I even have a Go Leafs Go flag. But I'm a sabres fan. I really liked Cojo if I remember his real name was Curtis Josepeth. there are curently two hockey categories I started NHL and sbrugger started hockey I belive. If I would have read his journal first then there would only be one topic. But maybe someone likes college hockey. I know the Frozen four has been in Buffalo for a couple of years. It is really big deal for college hockey fans but isn't advertsed like the basketball is. In any event go sabres.

World Series

I admit I do like baseball in person. But I find it kinda boaring on TV. Sometimes I can watch it during the playoffs. One thing about baseball is the entire post season is refered to as the World Series than they have breakdowns of each round. I have always found they use a lot of abrvations or letters Like American League Championship Series I belive they call it the ALCS. I think to people who arn't die hard fans and know all the shorthand it turns them off to the TV game. Tonight the Yankee's plays the Angels. I May check in on the score but I won't watch the game not sure if it all ready started or not. I think it is on at 8. But the playoff take a long time depening on how many games they wind up playing. But they still don't last as long as Hockey playoffs.

Buffalo Bills

Granted none of the pictures are pictures of the bills. But I thought I would put up a few pictures that I don't think I have posted before. Some of them are a few years old. My thoart is a bit sore i think from yelling at the bills game. I can't belive that McGee had like four blickers and didn't get a touchdown on that long return the beginging of it was amazing. My 49ers lost but the Raiders won. Desperate housewives is getting interesting. Tonight Raw debuts on USA so that should be fun I will check in on the monday night game every so often and see what is going on. What is so frustrating about the Bills is I can see they have the Talent but just arn't playing well. The O line isn't pass protecting that well. Losman is over excited and over throwing guys. I hope they can pull it togather. I think JP is the future of the Bills but he still has a lot to learn and needs to be given the time to learn it.

Movies and My Walk

Ok first things first I do like the new layout to elmwoodstrip. My Internet explorer on the other hand dosn't. I know I should download fire fox. But when I go to the show all page for the journals that page no matter what I do won't get arrow keys so there is no good way to see the entire journal entry so it is a little annoying but oh well.

On saturday I went downtown to buy a ticket to see George Carlin. I think it will be a great show, I sure hope so. I saw an add for a play I want to see at studio arena (I'm not really a play guy). It is based on the movie "A Christmas Story". I don't know how the play could be as good as that movie but I would still like to see it anyways.

As you can tell I'm uplaoding or posting a bunch of pictures. I took them before I went to the regal to see Serenity. I thought it was a great movie. If you liked "Firefly" or Sci-fi movies you will love this movie. I like that there where sad parts and funny parts in it that makes for a much better story. There was action and good effects also. I give it 3 out of 4 stars and two thumbs up. If that is your type of movie I'm sure you will like it. You might like it even if you are not into sci-fi or western style movies. I also watched the 40 year old virgin on DVD a buddy had the bootleg version. Some of it was funny I enjoyed it. The quality took some away from it so to review it wouldn't be fair. I know this post is a little jumbeled is that even a word. I hope the picture quality is ok when you shirnk pictures you don't know how they will come out. I think the pictures are an ok representation of what I like about Buffalo. You have these cool new looking building like the medical campus then you have old classic building like the church pictured. Then there are great houses like Roxy's wich is now a bar (lesbian friedly, gay bar, girl bar not really sure I got to revist there website for more info.) Then you have places being fixed up and converted into new places. I think getting a good mix off all those things is what makes and will make Buffalo a verry interesting place. I think I have covered everything I needed to.

seether

Today I walked down elmwood and bought my tickets for Oct. 10th seether concert. I think it will be a lot of fun. I took a few pictures of some nice cars like a BMW and Benz and Corvette convertables. Then watched some stuff I taped. I really like Miami Ink it is a great show. Plus Miami looks really cool when they show shots of it. Maybe I'll visit there sometime again to check it out as opposed to just for a cruise.

Laguna editing

I was watching my tape of Laguna Beach today and started to think about something. You only see the kids on that show. First of all they can all drive and all have cars. Not only that but they go on trips and all sorts of stuff. That got me thinking that it most be wierd when they edit the show to never show parents or any adults other then ones who work places where the kids go. It sord of makes the kids seem a lot older then they are. When I say kids I don't mean kids I mean that they are sons and daughters they are all basicly in there last year of high school. I know there have been some parents shown but not much really. Even though I was never a film student I think seeing how they edit reality shows might be interesting. But of course that footage would have to be edited also but it still might be neat to see.

Dagger

I forgot to mention this concert. I admit I'm not going myself since it is at the Amherst campus. I don't know why I like The Juliet Dagger but I do they are a lot of fun. Not sure who the other performers are. I don't think I've ever been to the center for the arts at UB. Maybe I'll go there someday.

Small Shops east aurora

this article was in the buffalo news today. I find it interesting because it seems simalur to what the elmwood area tried to do. Or maybe that would be still tryies do to. The sprit is atleast the same. You have to be verry tough to out do walmart. I know it really isn't about elmwood. But it is very simalur to how a lot of people would like elmwood to be.

FOCUS: EAST AURORA
The little village that wouldn't

East Aurora has maintained its quaint ambience by telling big-box stores to stay out of town - and making it stick

Derek Gee/Buffalo News
Village Trustee Elizabeth Cheteny wants East Aurora to be a model for other communities seeking to preserve their small-town identity.

Wal-Mart went up against East Aurora twice and lost both times.
Wegmans wanted to give the community its best. The village helped give it the boot.

And this summer, village leaders drove out restaurant drive-throughs.

Is it any wonder that East Aurora is the community where developers fear to tread?

East Aurora's get-tough stance on development, its vigorous and successful opposition to keeping out "big box retailers" like Wal-Mart and a healthy sense of community are key factors in retaining its atmosphere of a bygone era boasting small-town charm and a vibrant business district.

Some see this approach as an impediment to progress. But village officials and community leaders look around at the cookie-cutter developments in nearby communities and hear of the traffic problems in places like Williamsville and Hamburg that make for hazardous driving and walking conditions and say: If that's progress, you can have it.

"Old-time Main Street is what people are striving for. It's the new way," Village Trustee Libby Weberg said. "It's coming back around. A lot of communities have to reverse what they've done - suburban-style, auto-driven development."

The community's latest move was daring and controversial: banning new restaurant drive-throughs along Main Street.

At a time when some restaurant chains are erecting new buildings specifically because they want a drive-through, East Aurora's decision might seem shortsighted.

"How can you eliminate drive-throughs, at a time when people utilize them and they're a normal part of a lot of business plans?" asked Gary Grote, executive director of the Greater East Aurora Chamber of Commerce.

The ban's chief proponent, Trustee Elizabeth Cheteny, makes no apologies.

"We can be a model for other communities," said Cheteny, a preservationist and professional planner on the staff at the University at Buffalo.

"All too often, developers want to impose faceless, nameless architecture anywhere," she said. "They hit a wall here. We don't want to be anywhere; we want to be East Aurora."

Talk of the drive-through restriction sparked immediate results, even before the Village Board enacted it. Starbucks Coffee and Dunkin' Donuts revised their plans, eliminating drive-throughs after the village initially rejected their proposals.

Some merchants think it was a wise move to clamp down on drive-throughs.

"Drive-throughs bring additional cars and break up foot traffic. We need to keep a walkable community," said Lisa Hoffman, owner of KidBiz, a children's boutique. "Once we start to lose that, it would kill all these businesses. People would not park their cars and walk through small shops."

While stances such as the drive-through ban are considered rigid by some, others say it hardly rolls out the welcome mat for developers.

"Many businesses won't even come into East Aurora because they know what they're up against," said Aurora Building Inspector Patrick Blizniak, citing a pullout in 1997 by Wegmans and others.

A fine line

For years, East Aurora has straddled a fine line between controlled growth and a desire for new business. It has made the community the envy of others that many times have struggled to define their niche against big-time development.

Working in East Aurora's favor, is its location.

As the hub for five surrounding rural communities, East Aurora is like the big city to some and has been for years - further fueling longtime support for the mom-and-pop stores.

Equally important, it is far enough away from retail giants and suburban malls that many don't want to drive that far and prefer to shop right in their own back yard.

"I hope there's always the mom-and-pop stores and little shops," said Linda Coletti, manager of Toy Loft, a specialty toy store on upper Main. "There's something for everybody. It would be sad if none of this exists across the country. Every place would look the same."

East Aurora also has benefited from watching what has gone on elsewhere.

"Our location helps us because when the Cheektowagas, West Senecas and Lancasters were being bombarded with development and had no citizens groups yet, we were this sleepy little town that was left alone for a really long time," said Ellen Moomaw, a member of East Aurora's Citizens Coalition.

Ed Vidler, president of the family's 75-year-old five-and-dime store on upper Main, has long likened the village to Brigadoon.

"It's one of the few towns that's always been self-supporting," said Vidler, 77, pointing to its horse-racing heritage, the famed Roycroft campus and Fisher-Price's roots.

Vidler says reasonable growth is important.

"Had Wal-Mart come in, East Aurora wouldn't be what it is today," he said. "I think the concern now is urban sprawl and keeping business right in the core."

Citizens are active

East Aurora also stands out, many say, because of how active its citizens are in community issues and government. Plus, the weekly farmers' market, a slew of annual events and festivals bolster community spirit. There are even wooden garbage bins, with hand-carved Roycroft sayings, that line Main Street.

"A lot of communities don't have those things," Cheteny said. "It's a step back in time, and it's working."

Still, government officials and citizens groups remain vigilant about what developers want to do in the community.

"I don't think it's a matter of development or no development, but development that's shaped for the community," Cheteny said. "A village's character erodes slowly, and you don't realize it right away. It's rarely one project. It's a series of small decisions - a gradual erosion of what makes a place special."

Last year, Aurora town leaders capped the maximum size of any new retail/commercial buildings at 55,000 square feet, though it only applies in the town. The Aurora Citizens for Smart Growth spurred the town to consider the restriction after leading a fight five years ago against a $12 million Wal-Mart Supercenter proposed for Olean Road and renewed talk in the past few years of Wal-Mart's looking to expand its presence in the Southtowns.

Village officials never adopted a parallel measure, though they now are working on a set of design guidelines for commercial development while refining the village code to eliminate ambiguities so that developers know what the village is looking for when they make proposals.

"A healthy mix of retail is good. A number of chains shows a strong market, but I wouldn't want to see them dominate," Cheteny said. "Why shouldn't we set some ground rules for development and set standards for what we want?"

Moomaw says its important that the community stick together. "Keeping everything small and slower-moving, keeps all of us villagers together more - feeling like a family," she said. "We all love this place and can sit on our front porches and watch it go by and appreciate it. It does kind of have that timelessness."

Incredible Corpse

Last night I watched some of The Incredibles. I had seen it before at the show. I think it is a great movie. It has action and is funny at the same time and has good characters. I would recomend it but watch it on Staz then if you really like it a lot and feal like you want to own it get the DVD.

Tim Burton's Corpse Bride was really outhere. However most of his movies are so that is something you need to expect. I enjoyed it, even though it is a little morbid. I found some of it funny. I don't know if you would call it animation or what style of animation it is. He used the same type as in Nightmare Before Christmas. I thought it looked really good and was an enjoyable to look at movie.
