Life and Other Things

I haven't posted a journal in a little while. I wish i could say it's because my life is busy and exciting. Alas, it is not.

I have been on a small journey of self discovery. Finding out what is more important to me and how everything fits into place. Balance is difficult, but with more practice, i might just get there.

Getting used to wearing glasses again. The first pair i had to take back. Too heavy and the little nose thingies gave me sinus headaches. Got a slightly less fashionable pair, but i love geek chic, and they are much better. I have had a few wobbly moments going down stairs and such, but i got used to the bifocal bits quickly.

Going to a diabetic education class was mostly a good thing. Knowledge is power. Was very much looking forward to the meal planning aspects of it, but i think the dietitan was having a 1950's moment, despite the fact that she only knows about that decade from the sitcoms. Meat and two veg anyone?

Despite that, i have crossed over to the dark side. I eat chicken and turkey now. And i am getting all kinds of reactions...

Since my last class, i have been feeling under the weather. Then, i got sick and worked my crazy compressed schedule and on my 3 days off lost my voice.

I go back to work today, needing to have a talk with my boss. Hope she understands croaking....

Bird Brain

We have a bird feeder and get quite a variety of birds.

We hung the feeder right in front of a window in the kitchen so when we are sitting at that table, we can see them eating.

We have a big (ugly) evergreen in the yard not too far from where the feeder is and often, whether it is full, but particularly when it is empty, the branches of that tree are alive with birds.

We love the whole thing and my mother is always in awe of just how much activity we get at our bird feeder.

Since the weekend, we have been getting one not so bright, but brilliantly coloured, male cardinal. I wish he was eating from the feeder and he might be. However, he is also attacking one of the windows around the side of the house.

I can see him now because the room the computer is in juts out a wee bit into a bay shape and i can see the small trees and bushes he lands on before flying at the window. I assume he is attacking the other male cardinal he sees?

I just chased him away by drumming on the window with my fingernails. But he will be back. We tried closing the curtain, but we have a nice plant on the floor right in front of that window and don't want it to die either. He doesn't seem to like a particular part of the day.

Poor pretty bird, bless his heart.........

Fly Away!

Just picked out my spring vacation time. State of New York moves slowly, with lots of red tape. Plus, i had to wait for all other staff to pick, then it was my turn to pick from what was left -- 03 26 2011 through 04 11 2011. Might even have the chance to plan something, like flying away to some far away land. Any suggestions?

I Heart You

(e:Paul), i just wanted to tell you how much i have appreciated every minute of time and every cent you put into (e:strip).

i am not a geek. and every time you change even the tiniest thing about (e:strip), i feel like i am a moron.

recently, you put it out there that the journals have slowed.

i know, for me, sometimes, if i know something has changed with (e:strip), i am a chicken shit to try to post something, with the assumption i won't be able to figure something out intuitively like my wonderful hubs, (e:Uncutsaniflush) can. but that is also me being insecure and impatient...

besides, my life is boring. other than bitching and moaning, there ain't much to say.

except that i heart you, (e:Paul), and think you are a swell guy. :o)

Zilly Birthday

It was my friend, Kirsten's birthday last week and today is the first day we have both had some time open.

So, i thought, along with the gifts i got her, i would swing by ZillyCakes

and get her a cupcake. I was expecting something like the monster sized things from Delish

but what i got instead reminded me of what i would see on CupCake Wars

. I was impressed by the flavours and the cupcake bar.

I am so happy i did not go to Delish. Sorry to those that like it and to Artvoice for voting them best anything. First time, pastried were stale. OK, new business, so maybe they don't have enough turn over. Second time, hmmm... i wonder who buys this stale stuff. Third time, OMG, is that MOLD? So, anyhoo....

I got her a Chocolate Chai with Chocolate Chai Gnache, a Pear Ginger wtih Lemon Chiffon Buttercream and a traditional Red Velvet with Cream Cheese.

Here is what they look like... (OMG, Paul, how do i upload a pic? Where did the upload button go? I've tried about 10 times to drop the file there, but nothing happens!)

So i guess i should say the pics i just took should be here, but i can't put them here......

Fuck it. I give up. Just words in journals from me from now on.

not the first pickins from the organic (e:Uncutsaniflush) & (e:LeeTee) back garden, but thus far, the most prolific.

i love tomatoes.

growing up, i ate them on toast (rye, caraway rye the most coveted) with a sprinkle of salt, or much to my gran's dismay, right from the vine with a salt shaker hidden in my pocket.

winter tomatoes were hard and less flavourful in those days. they were from some far off land of unknown origin. now, we have hothouse tomatoes and the government insists on knowing where they are grown. a pale comparison, but for those of us with a tomato obsession, it's all we can do...

but i have to say, the biggest most evil of blasphemy are those people that put fresh tomatoes in the refrigerator. why, i beseech you, why!!???! ruins the texture and dulls the flavour.

that is, of course, is mere the humble opinion of a former foodie...
