Dead Lake

We're down in Silver Creek for the Willow Creek music festival. We thought maybe we could go swim in the lake but it turned out to be literally brown with sewage. Not to mention the giant rotting catfish in the sand.

Its so fucking gross that with the amount of money in this country we don't even try to keep our water clean. for example, buffalo's sewer control program is only going to handle 70 percent of sewage overflows, at a cost of $380 million by 2034. We really can't dedicate any more resources to that? The US can spend hundreds of billions on the military and tens of billions on arming other countries,http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_foreign_aid ($3 billion in military aid to Israel) but there is only $19 million a year for Buffalo to stop dumping literal shit in our water.

Farmers Market

The farmers market was so good today. So many berries and cherries were ready. The green beans looked amazing too, I can't remember having such fresh ones in a long time.

We even got cheese curds from the hot goat man.

Block Club Secrets

After the Unconventional Measurements show we headed over to block club. The dancing was fun, and the secret theme was awesome. (E:Paul) and I wrote not-so-secret secrets in German on the typewriter. We met up with Kerry, Andrew who I used to row with in high school and a Emma from gobike.

(E:Paul) had a less fun time getting stuck in kreiswichsen conversations outside. Less talking more dancing.

Afterwards Terry and I went to the shit mansion, but he didn't last too much longer. We got some Lloyd's nachoes and headed home.

Unconventional measurements

(e:Paul) (e:Terry) (e:yesthatcasey) and I missed The Buffalo bike party ride, but we were able to stop by dreamland for unconventional measurements. Mickey had built an amazing minecraft model of downtown buffalo on an Xbox (without scripting). He called it 'Views of Buffalo' I think. It included a Byron Brown sphinx complete with a cart ride through his butt.

I am not an arty person but computer art and data is something I can get into. Unfortunately some of these charts made no sense. I guess I am not an artist though because I couldn't get a clear picture.

More ruin porn of 23 North

Just to further document to (e:paul)'s. Its full of asbestos but the workers aren't wearing lung protection. Can someone say OSHA?

It almost looks as if they're saving the facade but I think not. I hope it doesn't become a parking lot.

I really think between this lot, the parking lot next to it and the warehouse behind the Firestone, a really cool building could be built. I think a four or five story apartment building similar to the Linnor with a front courtyard would be awesome and add more residential density to Allentown.

Fitz and the Tantrums

The best square of the summer so far, and the most packed.
(e:yesthatcasey), (e:libertad), (e:heidi), (e:diann), (e:flacidness), Tanya, and later Big Steve met up with us and came over for pizza and bocce.

They also got a UFC grappling match between Casey and I. I want to practice more. I'd rather not get my face punched though.

I can't believe it's already halfway through July.

First week

My first week contracting at Roswell has been amazing. I actually feel like my job is challenging and has a measurable impact rather then mindlessly copying and pasting between excel documents.

For a first project I've started working with the group on a appointment reminder system for the patient portal, so patients can get text, voice and email reminders when they have an upcoming appointment. I love that I get to program for a full workday now. After a week I feel that I can do well here.

One of the best parts is now I can eat lunch with (e:paul) and (e:terry). I feel bouge going out to lunch instead of bringing one, but I think it's also a good time to talk about work and figure out what I need to do.

This lunch was a a hummus wrap Washington Market. Paul's tea tasted like fish. I tweeted Honest Tea but no one ever answered me.

New job

So as luck would have it, the day before I got laid off, (e:Paul)'s team at Roswell got to hire a programming contractor to help them with having too much work in too short of a time. It works out because I've been hearing about the patient portal project through him, and learned a lot of my programming workflow and practices from him. so I was unemployed for almost no time at all. Guess I landed on my feet.

I started this Monday. Already I committed code and it seems like there are always going to be interesting things to learn and do. Paul and his team seem awesome and to work really well together. My contract is only for four months but I can't wait to see what I can do.

Old job done

So I didn't want to write about this until everything was sorted out but two Fridays ago I was laid off for no work. One Friday you come back after lunch and then blam! You're carrying your desk home in a garbage bag.

I can't say I was too torn up about it. I was only on one project, and after a year it didn't look like there was any room for growth or new opportunities. I got way more satisfaction coming home to program or to learn German than I had at any day at work. Now I will only ride 29 miles in a blizzard for fun.

Plus I got to spend a week as a house husband. I don't think I'll ever clean so much again. Then I took a weeks vacation from unemployment, so I am one of those lazy welfare queens.
