Wood shop at the foundry

(e:terry) and I checked out the woodshop at the Foundry last week, and took the basic safety class.

I had a ton of fun. I have pretty much zero knowledge about woodworking, so when we were able to take this scrody piece of wood, mill it to a perfect rectangle, and then route and finish it into a cutting board it was pretty amazing to come out and feel the end result.

The great part about it is they have all the tools and stations set up and organized. I don't think I would have tried it if you have to buy all the tools.

I'd consider going back and getting a membership to learn more but I want to have a specific project to work on before I do that.

Here are some pictures of Terry planing his wood. It's pretty butch.

Happy solstice

It's only up from here everyone. (e:terry) and I went on the Wassail ride. Last bike ride on the shortest day of the year. We sang the channel four holiday song as the unofficial theme.

(e:twisted), I am working on getting estrip infrastructure ready. We severely neglected the server and host estrip was on, to be expanded on in another post!

So long, trusty steed

I don't really write anymore. This is partly due to working to much, partly conflagration of the world we're living in right now and firehose of news that comes along with it.

But anyways I wanted to write about my bike. Around a month and a half back on a Fwednesday night ride, my poor Trek FX 7.1 bit the dust. The rear drop out snapped right off at the axle! Only 8 years old - I guess I might have killed it by pack mule-ing groceries.

image

Here it is in it's final moments, looking undignified.
image

It was my first real bike and first real purchase that took me to my first job, on my first dates, around at school and everywhere!
Here's baby-faced me with it in 2012:
image

Luckily I was able to find a warranty claim on it with Trek. They sent me back a new Trek FX 1. I thought it was time to move on to a touring bike though, so I traded it in and now I am riding this beautiful Surly Trucker.

Drop handlebars and a steel frame have changed my life - same weight as my old bike and it doesn't even flinch at a pothole or a full load of groceries. I've already ridden to Niagara Falls on it with (e:terry).

Snowy Owl

Wow, in any possible timeline of the universe did you think you'd feel so invested in an Alabama election? I know I didn't. Thanks for not letting us down, 51%.

Yesterday (e:terry) spotted a snowy owl on top of our garage. She is so cute. I love the way her head just rotates around. I'd prefer if she would stay away from our yards rabbits and mice though and stick to something veggie.

DJ Venom at Dnipro

Last Saturday (e:paul) and I checked out the Tea Party rave at Dnipro.

Not many showed up because of the snow but it was worth it. I don't think I've ever danced so hard in one hour. I also think it was the most sober I've been at a rave, (e:paul) and I split one skunky Polish beer.

Strangely enough, I was listening to DJ Venom's music on youtube today and came across his webshow. It turns out he's the brother of Kim, from Matt and Kim (also awesome).

The other djs' sets were awesome too. We ran into our crazy rave friend Lisa, who gave us a saucer and told us that "the night is going to get saucy"

Rest of NYC

A dumpling place with a C-grade health inspection, 6 hours of marathon crunkness for (e:paul)'s birthday and a nameless Korean friend.

The women's march was happening the Saturday we were down. 9 hours after the protest started, it was still going. (e:hodown) said they had three times the turnout they were expecting. Fuck Trump and his tacky tower.

Down the street from the protest was a Microsoft store with people playing VR in the window.

The Metropolitan Museum

I think the most impressive building I've ever seen, right in central park. I can't even comprehend the volume and insanity of the exhibits. Although, half the artifices donated by the Rockefellers etc not just spoils of colonialism/war/genocide?

Here's a bike riding delivery squirrel in Brooklyn.

image
We accidentaly navigated via the subway to Metropolitan, the bar, instead of the Metropolitan, museum. It turns out it's a gay bar. What good SEO though. What if you named your restaurant "restaurant" "food" "lunch"?

Trip to New York

Last week we headed down to Brooklyn with (e:uchina) and (e:yesthatcasey), to celebrate Paul getting old (40)!

(e:paul) found a super fance apartment in Prospect Hill. It was my first real time in New York and it looked how I pictured Brooklyn to be like (stately ol' brownstones). It had more than enough room for all of us and was cleaner than our house.

image

image

image

The first day in New York we went to the Mueseum of Modern Art. I have to say I was pretty engaged for the first three floors.

What I liked the most an exhibition on utilitarian modern design from central and northern Europe. They had a plain ass looking model kitchen and everything - no crevices to get dirt or crumbs, everything cleanable metal etc.

It got really meta when they exhibited posters, about exhibitions of American appliances in Germany, again in New York. I think someone should make an exhibit about exhibits of exhibits of modern American appliances for 50 years from now.
image

image

I don't know much about art history but I never made a connection between modern art from the early 20th century, and pretty much everything that you see from the early 90's.
