Book Clubs

I've never been a fan of book clubs. I feel like I have a very specific taste in books (books that have a lot of angst and danielle steel novels, but no chick lit) and I could never see wasting my time reading a book someone else suggests and then sitting around talking about it. Mostly its the reading a book someone else picks out part that bothers me. That is until this week. I just finished 1984. I know, I know everyone read this book in like 4th grade and is so over it. I read it too, but ages ago and I'm pretty sure I didn't so much read it as buy the cliff notes and write a paper on it that still got me an A.

Anyways this time I really read it. Cover to cover. Twice I missed my train stop because I was so engrossed in it. Man was it disturbing and interesting. I've had dreams about it. And now that I'm done reading it I can't stop thinking about it, and how fucked up the end is. I feel like the only way to get it out of my system is to talk about it with other people who've read it. Thus the whole book Club might actually be a good idea realization..

Most Affordable Towns

My little hometown. Funny how they forget to mention the snow..

Kenmore, New York
Median family income: $59,875
Median home price (2006): $93,413
Kenmore joins the aforementioned Tonawanda to form a region the locals call Ken-Ton. The Buffalo suburb offers low-cost housing in low-crime neighborhoods. Decent single-family homes start around $70,000 there with many in the $150,000 range. More exclusive areas, like Deerfield Park, will cost you close to $300,000.

Vacation

Yesterday I found out that mid-year bonuses at my job are all f'd up. In addition we now get year end bonuses in March of '08. Because my firm was bought out by a Private Equity Firm we changed our year end. Long story short I get a "year end" bonus which should be payment for 12 months but now instead is for 14 months with no additional amount for the 2 additional months. Anyways with all of this I was suppossed to get my mid-year bonus in July. Well looks like I'm not getting it till October. They tell us this days before we were expecting them. So I postponed my vacation in order to have enough spending cash. Well that and work is going to be nuts until the end of August.

Really the whole point of that long paragraph is I now have to wait until August 21st to fly first class. Really that's the highlight of my vacation. I'm really looking forward to it. More than I think is normal. I always walk by the first class folks when boarding and look longingly at their large leather seats. Then I cry on the inside a little again after the stewardess makes the announcement that the bathroom in the front of the aircraft is for first class passengers only. I have to pee like 2 times an hour and bathrooms are essential to me. I can't wait to have access the the exclusive bathroom.

Oh and also I'm looking forward to the free booze that apparently they serve in first class. I mean come on we all know momma likes to get her drink on while flying.

Farmers in Spain

This man has clearly not seen a woman in a long ass time (pun intended):

Astronaut did NOT wear diapers

Apparently the astronaut who was all cra-gee and drove 950 miles to confront her ex lovers current GF is now claiming she was NOT wearing diapers at her time of arrest. Why did she wait until now to dispute that part of the story? Did she miss the part where it was all over the news for days? I mean either she was or wasn't. I think the cre-gee wore off, her drugs are kicking in and she is now a little embarassed.

Lesson learned: Don't wear adult diapers to confront a romantic rival if you don't want it all over the news (and then featured in an episode of Law & Order).

Breaking News

My boss has offered her milage to me for a plane ticket as a "thank you". There are strings attached. I have to use it to visit my mom. I'm not thrilled about the last part, but I mean I have to go visit her anyways right? What better way to arrive than first class. I haven't flown first class since I was like 9 years old. I miss it.

Yesterday

Yesterday I had a super annoying day. Or at least it started off that way. I got up, late as usual and rushed to get ready. I got to the train and was super crowded and my $100 Bose ear buds were (are) crapping out after less than a year in use. Then I got to the subway and I put in $20 to refill my metro card and the f'ing machine ate my $20. I'm so fed up with the MTA. All they want to do is increase rates and decrease service. I decided to boycott the MTA for the day. They will not be getting any more of my hard earned dollars. I made the choice to walk from 57th to 33rd on my way home.

At 5:30pm promptly I leave my office and walk out into the swealtering NYC heat with like a million other people because there's also been ANOTHER power outtage thanks to f'ing ConEd (who also likes to raise rates and provide shitty service) and the trains are all jacked up along with the buses, so everyone is walking. So there I am walking down 6th Avenue, cursing everyone and right in front of me like a breath of fresh air appears Mr. Anderson Cooper. And out loud I said "Anderson Cooper, check". Apparently he's now been crossed off my "celebs to see" list. And Just like that my day was better.

Lesson of the story: seeing a celeb on the street makes everything better.

The cold war is over

I have to say no matter how many times me and Paulie swear we think the other person is a total jerk we always end up friends again.

So in the famous words of the Golden Girls (how many times have you been waiting for JUST the right time to quote the Golden Girls):

"Thank you for being a friend".
