Postcrossing

A while back I signed up for this website post crossing.org. the concept is that you send a postcard to a randomly assigned stranger somewhere in the world, and then they get it your name comes up for another stranger to send you one. It sounds like the beginning of some lifetime movie where i get murdered, but i haven't so far. I sent three cards, two to a guy and girl in Germany, and one to a biologist out in Siberia.

I know its super old school, but there's something about having physical mail which I never really get, especially from another person. it'd be way easier and to chatroulette but this is kind of cool (and has way fewer old man penises).

Today I got a card from Taiwan from Sheng/Rita? it was pretty cute.

Ch-ch-chili

Last night (e:paul), (e:terry), (e:xandra), and I headed to (e:mike) and (e:libertad)'s with (e:yesthatcasey) and Tanya for a chili dinner and some Cards Against Humanity (inaprop as usual, see Paul's post).

The chili was amazing, (e:libertad) and (e:mike) even made a vegetarian bean one. Paul's water, not so much. Terry and I made baklava and apple crisp to complete stuffing everyone.

Paul and Terry and I food coma'd on the floor before we could even plan to do anything else.

Gay dance night

Friday night, (e:paul), (e:terry), (e:yesthatcasey), (e:mike) and (e:libertad) went out to the gay dance night at Milkies on Elmwood. We met up and saw (e:Robert) and Mickey there for a little bit before heading over to Acropolis, where we ran into Jesse. I hadn't been dancing there before but the music was pretty good.

Jesse ended up rescuing me from some suspender snapping bros. I didn't really mind after this guy asked to snap a suspender, but he ended up pulling one strap off the pants. Jesse beasted out and told Broseph to step off, he freaked out and his boss came over and started apologizing like crazy offering us drinks and everything.

We finished off the night by heading out to Underground for saddy hardcore as Paul put it. Gut nacht all around.

da farm shop

Last Thursday I went to the Farm Shop Lexington and Ashland, mostly because I kept reading about their amazing custard online. they are the same dairy as the farmers market who brings their stuff in from White Cow Dairy in East Otto. The store was really cute but the selection wasn't big, mostly a few types of whey yogurt drinks, yogurts and custard (plus lamb but IDC). The employee there was helpful and knew tons about the dairy, he actually worked on the farm. I got a birch and a berry yogurt drink plus a vanilla custard for $10. The yogurt drinks were okay, custard was good but (e:paul) and (e:terry) said it smelled like farts and couldn't be near me when I ate it. Oh well! I don't think I'd go back unless they sold cheese or maybe whole milk.

To finish off a bougie night of eating, (e:Paul) and I headed to the coop where he got more of the best gummies I have ever tasted. I'm seriously addicted to these things, plus they have no gelatin.

Another food truck worthy cereal from (e:Paul). Chocolate hazelnut biscotti granola, bananas, blackberries, eggnog, pecans, almond milk and coconut macaroons. Sugar coma for real.

Dell Jet Engine

I finally replaced the fan on my laptop. its hard to tell but it only has three of thirteen fan blades on it. I wish I recorded the sound because it sounded like a freaking 747 taking off ever since I got it. At least it never overheated!

Work Time Change

I finally got approval today from my supervisors to move my work time from 7:30-4:30 to 8:30-5:30. I asked to do this because not only will I get more sleep (hopefully) I also will be able to ride my bike in day light at least one at and avoid traffic both ways. Neither of them really understood why I'd want to ride a bike, they both thought it was because I didn't have full access to a car. Almost no one older at work actually seems to understand why I ride to commute and view it as a crazy death wish. Winter might be riskier but on nice days its just as fast and cheaper than driving. It seems like such a generational disconnect on how we think of cars.

Speaking of winter, I really want to get these studied tires and dayglo fenders for my bike. It'd be such a nerdmobile.

PAI Power hour

After work yesterday, (e:Terry) and I rode our bikes over to meet (e:YesThatCasey) at the PAI Power Hour at Niagara and Rhode Island. PAI is the Public Accountability Initiative group that tries to expose connections and conflicts of interest between powerful people and decision makers. I actually have heard about them before in the news and never knew they were based out of Buffalo!

The director, Kevin Connor, talked about what the group did, before leading a sort of walk through on how they approach an issue. They take an issue, list the power brokers involved, and start to find relationships between them to see who and how can be leveraged into accomplishing a change. One example they did was identify the Center for Sustainable Shale Development(fracking), allegedly an industry/environmentalist group for fracking, as a sham. PAI investigated all of the environmental groups involved and found they were funded by the Heinz Foundation, which was controlled by natural gas directors. The report the produced ended up causing three people, including the president of the Heinz Foundation, to resign and pretty much ended the CSSD. Link

The example we ran through was with Buffalo Public Schools, which ended up getting derailed into pretty pointless discussion.

One of their main tools is a site called Little Sis. It's kind of a database of important people to list their connections, donations they've made and recieved, organizations they're in etc, and can dynamically generate charts showing the relationships between different people. It was really an awesome tool, and was basically developed by Kevin and another developer out of NYC. Apparently it's all PHP and MySQL now, but they're working to migrate it over to Ruby. I wonder if they ever considered open sourcing something like this, it looked powerful.
