More bluegrass

Uncle Pen is another classic. Here's a 1956 Bill Monroe version.

And a 1990 Phish version (using rock instruments)

A nice description of the difference between bluegrass & country and how they developed:

I think this old country tune nicely illustrates the difference: Buck Owens played I've Got a Tiger by the Tail on The Dukes of Hazard. (This is one of A's favorites and he always makes his bands play it.)

Midnight Moonlight (Old & in the Way version 1973 - Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, Peter Rowan, Vassar Clements, John Kahn.)

A more modern style: Ain't No Bugs on Me, Garcia & Grisman, Not for Kids Only [(e:enknot), (e:lilho), (e:hodown), (e:metalpeter) - you need this album for all the little ones!]

Another Garcia/Grisman, Grateful Dawg, live 1990.

They're more genre-defying while using the instruments of bluegrass. Amazing artists. What's really fun is tracing all the traditionals that the Grateful Dead covered. I know a lot more old country than I want to admit.

Bluegrass

Bluegrass features instruments not part of the usual country, blues or rock setup: banjo, fiddle, stand up bass, and mandolin. Drums are rarely used. Voices are often arranged in harmonies.

The classic Rocky Top by Osborne Brothers -

Alternate version: Roy Clark with the Muppets

and one more version, just for (e:Mike) - Dolly Parton

The Carolina Chocolate Drops are my current favorite. They're classified as a string band, but it's still Appalachian folk. Here they're covering something popular that I don't think I've heard the original of.

Don't get trouble in your mind

This is one of my favorite covers of a pop song in bluegrass style (altho it has a full drum kit behind it). It makes me laugh every time and I've got plenty of good memories associated with it.

Tioga County-based bands:
THP (or at least parts) & GHG will likely be playing Memorial Day weekend at the party I go to every year. (e:heidi,48869) GHG played for my 31st birthday party.

And when do we get to play with this???

VBA?

Ugh... almost done with this stupid access db and I need to make a form print two copies and stop having a blank second page (which may just be from imperfectly arranged fields. Here's the code:

Private Sub PrintTicketButton_Click()
On Error GoTo Err_PrintTicketButton_Click

DoCmd.DoMenuItem acFormBar, acEditMenu, 8, , acMenuVer70
DoCmd.PrintOut acSelection

Exit_PrintTicketButton_Click:
Exit Sub

Err_PrintTicketButton_Click:
MsgBox Err.Description
Resume Exit_PrintTicketButton_Click

End Sub

Suggestions, anyone?

It's been so long since I've done any coding! (damned tax law) My developer reference books are all in storage in PA.

Cuteness!

Adrian gave Nisha a treat and then tried to take it back. She turned her head away and put her paw on his hand to
stop him from taking it.

Office chicks

I love my office. Nisha loves chasing chickens or sitting with jill. It's very wet here. Uncle dudley's basement is flooded (no laundry for me!). A's basement flooded a couple nights ago, about 4".

Quarries

I'm hanging out at a quarry installing some software... The weighstation has as many as 400 trucks a day, about 22 tons each truck. That's a lot of rocks.

Fixing water contamination

(e:Paul) asked about how residential well water is being remediated when gas drilling contaminates it. This story discusses a whole-house reverse-osmosis installation. My understanding is that gas drillers aren't installing reverse-osmosis systems very often. They're really not a permanent solution - they take maintenance and money to run, they're noisy, they're slow.

“Both of the homes will be getting reverse osmosis systems which will remove total dissolved solids, chlorides, manganese, iron, dissolved methane and ethane gas from their water supplies,” Tarbell said. “There will also be pumps installed, water softeners and UV light to disinfect the water as part of the project.”
