Rude

I was rude to a classmate this morning... During a break in tax policy class, we're riding the elevator to the floor with the snack shop, he said, "I think this class is just going in circles."

"Oh? How so?"
"It all just comes down to personal values and so we just go in circles about who believes what."
"Hmmm... so how much have you looked at the data behind tax policy?" (that's a focus of the class)
"uh.... yeah... enough..."
I laughed somewhat scornfully and walked away.

In a seven-person class, this is rather uncomfortable. Ooops.

Seriously, dude. You don't want to hear about tax policy because as you said, "I want to be rich someday, so I don't think the rich should pay more taxes." I just love "i got mine, screw you" arguments, even aspirational ones.

heidi writes at 01:26:51 02/21/11 - Comment #60827: When I applied to Brandeis for grad school, I was amazed at all the holidays they took - full set of Jewish and several Christian holidays that aren't standard days off. The problem with just following a state schedule is that the state schedule already preferences Christian observances. My school district at home still takes the first day or two of deer season. It's all about who your constituents are.

paul writes at 12:47:43 02/21/11 - Comment #60826: Ya UB observes jewish holidays instead. I never got that. It seems totally unpatriotic to me. I can't believe a state run institution can observe religious holidays instead of state ones.

Once you go down that route, where do you draw the line. Especially in aN institution with people from more diverse backgrounds. As the Indian and Asian population of UB grows are they going to accomdate those ethnic and religious groups too? My opinion is that they should simply drop all religious holiday observation and stick with the state holidays.

Graduation

I graduate May 21. I signed up for senior pictures, paid for the cap & gown rental, and don't expect to have any trouble with classes this semester that would prevent me from graduating. However, I'm scared about that weekend. Jill & Kelly really want to be here and have started putting plans in place to make it possible, but I'm estimating that the likelihood of their actual attendance is about 45 percent. (Six kids, right?) I've asked Uncle Dudley to be here, and gave her a list of nearby hotels, but I'm not feeling too confident that she and her boyfriend will make it. A would come, of course, but I'm trying to not fall back in our old relationship and haven't asked him. So... I'm going to be really sad if I do all this to mark a major accomplishment and no one comes, reinforcing the constant theme of my relationships: don't trust, don't expect.

Beer

I'm at a nascar-themed neighborhood bar in corning, ny and the options are limited: busch, molson canadian, mic light, coors light on tap, bud, yuengling, and guiness in the cooler. Yuengling is shockingly sweet compared to my usual ipas.

They're heavily filtered, which means it's really fermented apple juice. (The distinction between apple juice and apple cider is filtration.) I like cider to have stuff in it and be a nice toasty brown, which is not what you get with most commercial hard ciders. I'm open to recommendations! My fav is homebrew cider, of course. Yum yum yum yum with fond memories attached.

jason writes at 06:07:33 02/10/11 - Comment #60578: I can answer that, Peter. It's hard cider, not beer. Actually it's a very good hard cider, although I admit I don't try a bunch of them myself.

James - If you like sours, try Ithaca's Brute or Ithaca's LeBleu. I would say Brute is on the "less sour" side between the two - a sour apple flavor. When I had LeBleu (imagine what the fruit is - not very pronounced, however) it was all about the brett.

heidi writes at 03:26:58 02/10/11 - Comment #60573: I hated the La Roja - more than slightly reminiscent of Robitussin. A couple people really liked it. I liked the Gueuze a lot and would definitely try it again. It was my first time trying lambics.

Next beer club: March 9. The focus will be on stouts. Not my fav, but I'd like to explore that type in more depth.

My first Gueze was the Cantillion and it definitely was a totally different beer drinking experience. I guess the term would be "it's an aquired taste". At New Years My brother and I shared a bottle of Girardin 1882 Black Label which was the most Barnyardy beer I have ever had. I have a bottle of the Fonteinen Oude Gueze on hand just waiting for the right moment and right crowd to be opened.

I'm really curious what you thought of the Jolly Pumkin La Roja. I haven't really had a whole lot of sours other than Duchesse de Bourgogne which I loved.

jason writes at 11:37:58 02/10/11 - Comment #60570: Interesting, you tried the Schaerbeekse Kriek. Out of the three Lambics, that's probably the one that is going to be the most traditional representation of the style out of the three. It also uses the Morello cherries grown around Brussels that is traditional for a Kriek.

It's interesting you are trying out the sours. The most traditional representation of Lambic comes from Cantillon, with the taste not being sweet but sour, really sour. The Cantillon Kriek has cherry as sort of an accent flavor.

Gueuze is a different animal altogether. Blended lambics, no fruit added. Big boy and big girl beer. Given how sweet the Lindemans stuff is I wonder how that went. I've tried a few and they will pucker your freaking mouth up. I like the Lambics/Sours myself.
