Counterfactual thought

I think (e:paul) was wondering how businesses actually make money from Groupon...

From:

What is missing in the typical narrative about Groupon – the one promoted by the company – is the “counterfactual”. The counterfactual is a powerful concept embedded in statistical theory. In order to evaluate the data in front of us, we must imagine an alternative world (the counterfactual) in which we allow the data to present themselves differently. To understand how medicine X might affect you, you can't just measure what happened after you took medicine X; you must also consider what might have happened if you took medicine Y and/or nothing at all.

So, instead of just thinking about the new customers brought in by Groupon, we must also consider the world without Groupon. In the world without Groupon, the regulars pay $100 for their meals, and the new customers pay $0 or some other amount (if Giorgio’s has other ways to attract them). This allows us to realize that the insertion of Groupon into that world would lower the intake from regulars while simultaneously raising the intake from new customers. For the merchant, whether Groupon is a net benefit depends on the balance between those two numbers.

This is related to the concept of opportunity cost in economics. When evaluating the value of an investment, we can’t just tally up the returns of said investment; we have to compare those returns to the returns of doing something else such as keeping the money in the bank.

Freaking Out! A bat is here!

(e:leetee), I have no idea how you dealt with having a bat flit about in your house. We just spotted an absolutely humongous one at the 24 and spent 20 minutes freaking out and trying to capture it (well.. I think (e:Terry) was trying the real capture part and (e:Paul) was trying to capture it virtually using his phone.

I think I nearly died because (e:Paul) was shrieking like a maniac and the bat came within a 2 cm radius near my hair. I am sure the bat thought my head was a fellow bat, what with my insanely out-of-control hair.

We think it has flown out the door now but it could well be hiding behind the sofa or lounging on the chandelier. Needless to say, I think we need to pre-empt our bat-dread-induced-heart-attacks and think carefully about our last minutes and maybe our last words on this planet. Should we be whispering or yelling it out over the 24 rooftop?

We read in Wikipedia that:

bats catch prey by aerial hawking and gleaning tactics

That monster was totally aerially hawking and gleaning NEAR our heads.

Can be accessed through the command:

It's kind of nifty how my earliest history is a nice documentation of everything I did post-clean-install of Crunchbang (and would like to do for future installs).

Install R on debian without an internet connection.

R needs all these packages to install on debian. So essentially, if my /var/cache/apt/archives/ had these packages already then it wouldn't need to download anything from the net. With these packages already there, R would install instantly without need for an internet connection.

This is the r-base install procedure on debian output from the terminal.

Of course versions etc. would change with time. But that is what updates are for.

Followed by more internal R packages within R:

Pipe it through

somecommand goes here > some output goes here

For example:

ls > filename

lists all names in that directory in a neat little text file called "filename" (that doesn't even need an extension because linux *just knows*(tm) what that file is without need for extensions.

Simple stuff, but fun when you learn it.

Hating big hair.

While I am hating on non-specific things, let me rant about about my hair as well.

That is not even an exaggeration. At this point my hair is bigger than my head and that is a really bad place to be in. Not only is it completey out of control and curling all over the place, it is also making my head feel heavy. I really should chop it all off.

Only, I thought I could let it grow for a bit but that is backfiring. The ugly phase is taking its toll.
