Fedora 16 mediocrity.

Start up time to where I can actually use the GUI is 2min 38s 290ms 218us.

Startup finished in 5s 585ms 600us (kernel) + 5s 8ms 313us (initrd) + 2min 27s 696ms 305us (userspace) = 2min 38s 290ms 218us.

The damn Bluetooth NEVER works and ALWAYS gives this error.

I have disabled the bluetooth for now, because it seems to be going into some wretched loop.
su -c 'systemctl stop bluetooth.service'
su -c 'systemctl disable bluetooth.service'

The system freezes and hangs at least once everyday and I have to do a hard reboot.

Wireless connectivity to my office wifi is PATHETIC.

If I didn't have so much work piled up, I would totally chuck this super-mediocre release in an instant. What a pity I absolutely don't have any time at all and have to finish mountain loads of analyses without a break. :/

EDIT:
There is now a bug report on the frequent and random Fedora 16 freezes and a growing forum thread on several people who are experiencing the same headache:

The underlying message is if you have a realtek wireless card (particularly this one: RTL8188CE 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter (rev 01)), you are better off in Fedora 15. You do NOT want to upgrade to Fedora 16, at least till this frequent freeze bug is sorted out.

Google Lists is going away

In a miscalculated move I put all my zillion bookmarks in Google Lists (e:tinypliny,55528) mainly because it integrated so well with the context menu of Google Chrome - my favourite browser.

I recently migrated to delicious and found that I couldn't export any of my bookmarks that were under lists (in my case, all of them) to delicious.

Thankfully, with the imminent shutting down of Google lists, this problem will be solved.

From the "Goodbye, Lists: FAQ at this

What happens to my Lists once the feature is discontinued?

Lists that you own: All items will be saved as bookmarks with the label "MyBookmarkList". Comments will be saved along with each bookmark.
All other lists (including those shared with you): You’ll no longer be able to access these lists. If you want to save items from these lists, you should bookmark them before December 19th, 2011.

Whew. Finally a way to export those pesky isolated list bookmarks. I don't have to lose my zillion R, Perl and linux references.

Okular and KDE Gloss

Internal PDF links are not working in Evince. I don't know why. Maybe they never really worked ever and I only thought they did. I am reading a heavily cross-referenced long book chapter and it is extremely painful to not have internal links working on the PDF reader.

So I am installing okular.

It's a 61 meg download with around 41 components. Looks like it's pulling the entire KDE library with it. But guess what is making up nearly 50% of this byte-age?

(29/41): oxygen-icon-theme-4.7.3-1.fc16.noarch.rpm 28 MB

An icon theme for the blasted reader.

I think that is such a telling statement about the priorities in KDE, in general. But it sure looks good, is oodles better than Evince and internal as well as external hyperlinks and cross-references work! I think that's all that matters in the end.

Strangely, there are just 3-4 flashy icons on the reader. But it downloaded all this crap:

Two crashes in the past two minutes

What is going on? :/ Every time I go to tinypic to upload a picture and one of their flash address containers loads, my gnome shell crashes and I am back to the bootup terminal.

These is the tail of my /var/log/messages in between one crash and the next.
{(e:paul), try pasting these messages in a journal without the code tags, a messed up TOC turns up! I had no idea (e:strip) could do TOCs! Since when do we have that functionality?!}

Making sense of /var/log/messages

If there is one thing that error messages in /var/log/messages are really good for it is for regular expressions practice. I think I am getting better at regex by using the regex tool in geany to sort out and condense the list of errors my system encounters almost daily. I don't know what most of these errors mean but I gather than anything that has "error|warning|failed" is a problem.

I am realizing that the error messages are organized and labeled pretty well. I was able to isolate all the problematic messages from different components of the system with some regexing, sorting, deletion of duplicate lines and numbers within brackets. I guess the numbers within brackets are IDs of sorts but I am just focusing on the unique errors for now. I whittled down the list of 933 lines to around 100. It would have been nice if I could get the count of how many times the error occurred right next to the error line, but I haven't figured out how to do that yet. Some of these errors/failures/warnings occur numerous times; some as many as 100 times.

  • GLib-GIO-WARNING **: Missing callback called fullpath = /var/run/ConsoleKit/database

Hmm.. so basically, everytime I want to connect to a wifi hotspot, the system has this error: Activation (wlan0) failed for access point (ESSID of hotspot) Googling for this error brings up an enormous number of threads, for eg. This is definitely a problem with the kernel module for my wireless card. I guess whoever made that module must not have tested it on multiple-point wireless access spots or where hotspot signals are weak. It does connect comfortably with a single access wireless spot at home. Kind of defeats the mobility of the laptop. Wish the people who made the kernel module would revisit the module in less than ideal wireless scenarios and do some bug-fixing because I am way in over my head trying to troubleshoot this. I tried (e:uncutsaniflush)'s suggestion of trying other kernels. Every kernel that I tried and that has a wireless module for my card pretty much has similar problems. So no luck there.

All this drama makes me conclude that the biggest thing that linux has going against it is hardware support. There is no dearth of software genius in the community.

Text Processing Tools:
Apart from regexing, I found TextOpus online I wish I could write perl programs that replicate the functionality of this tool. Or just download an offline version of the tool.

Actually I just want to be as skilled as Tomasz Klekot at text processing.

Whole Wheat Flax Seed Fig Loaf

I think I have the magic ratio, finally.

1: Water
+ 2.00 ~2.25: Whole Wheat Flour
≥ 0.25: Ground Flax Seed {I think this is where you can add "whatever"}
+ 1 Tbsp: Fig butter
+ 2 Tbsp: Extra Virgin Olive Oil
+ generous salt
+ ~1/2 packet yeast

image

Let the yeast feast on
1:Water
1:Flour,
1tbsp olive oil
generous salt and the fig butter. (they like fig butter! It's basically food for the yeast. I couldn't taste it in the bread probably because the yeast ate it all.)

The feasting period ends with a warmish bubbly looking liquidy flour. Add the rest of the flour and extras and knead till your arms fall off the dough is not sticky but slightly tacky. Use the rest of the oil while kneading the dough.

Let the dough rest for 2-3 hours. (Up to 12 hours if you want to intensify the sour taste. I didn't have any patience today and allowed just 2 hours before I harvested the dough for the next phase.)

Punch it down, knead, shape and put in loaf pans.
Cover the loaf pan with an aluminium foil tent as a lid.
Put it in the oven. Let it sit for 30 more minutes.
Turn on the oven and set the temperature to 350-375 deg F.
Bake the loaf covered for around 30 minutes
Uncover, spray the bread with water and bake for 20~30 more minutes.

Let the bread cool (gluttons will be tempted to slice whiles it's still hot. I did! The result is super delicious but the bread is kind of wet and doughy with the water vapour and not like what you would expect from bread).

Slice after cooling. Spread speculoos paste or butter generously on slices and Enjoy!

Mission 5 accomplished! *

PS: The pizza I made alongside this bread was an unmitigated disaster. The less said about it the better.

I don't want to like you!

Why does every corner shop and big retailer want me to "like" them on facebook?? It's so annoying especially when they link offers and discounts to this asinine practice.

I want those offers, dammit. But I don't want facebook. I won't get those offers and discounts if I don't submit to the lameness and sheep-herding on facebook.

Hmm...

I guess my resistance against facebook trumps my attraction to those offers.

I am glad it took so little time to get this quandary sorted.

PS: Where did the drawing gadget on (e:strip) go?

I wish I could learn...

0. R completely and thoroughly
1. Perl well
2. Unix commands well (so commandline becomes second nature)
3. to churn out papers like a maniac (aka postdoc)
4. how to make perfect stovetop popcorn
5. how to make a perfect sourdough bread every single time
6. how to make perfect pancakes or waffles
7. how to make pizza base without a recipe and well.

I intend to get a head start on those resolutions.

America loves McDs

image
181,456 X $13 (out of which McD's get $6.50) and counting.

I am tempted to get those 5 large fries.
---
EDIT
Whoa. They extended the deal by a day. And 20K more people have been caught in the fly fry trap. That is almost approaching the size of the whole population of Buffalo.

And damn, I totally missed out the $10 Whole Foods deal! I need to check my spam folder more often. :)

Tale of a Nail Wimp.

I obviously wasn't thinking much or even clearly last week. I have weird-feeling nails now thanks to that phase of temporary brain-fog.

I unconsciously scrubbed my kitchen and bathroom sinks without any gloves on. The bleach eroded the top layer of my nails and my palm skin off. It looked pretty scary. Moisturizing didn't make any difference. I was afraid that my nails would just keep unraveling, become brittle and fall off before the new growth had a chance to come in.

My bout with fogged non-existent thought processes didn't end there.

I don't own any clear nail polish and didn't want to get an entire bottle, so I actually went in to a nails parlour to see if they could apply a clear coat of polish to the damaged nails. They gave me a manicure. I should have just walked out, but I didn't because I was too worried about the rough and torn appearance of my nail surfaces... and I admit I was curious about how my nails would look like with a coat of polish (even though I could not bring myself to select anything other than clear polish).

It was a really bad idea. I should have listened to the tiny voice in my head that usually warns me about impending doom. It was totally yelling and I ignored it. The result is my nails feel weird now. I know that there are no nerve endings on nails but I can actually feel the coat of clear polish on them. It is almost as if my nails are having trouble breathing and moving. Ugh, how do people tolerate this weird-feeling? It doesn't feel good at all to have this extra sensory input from things that usually stay out of my conscious senses. I want to rub off the polish but I don't want any more chemicals on my nails - at least for now. Nail polish remover seems worse than nail polish for eroded nails.

Well.

I guess there is a positive aspect to this nail drama. It's good to know that I haven't missed anything by not owning any nail polish all these years and I am pretty sure now that I can live the rest of my life without it. And it doesn't pay to scrub sinks without gloves on.

(e:lilho), you are not just a fashion icon, you are a brave woman.
