The Honeymoon is over

In my years of being a waiter I have noticed certain traits amongst my coworkers. Wait staff tend to be alcoholics, have children, or they're drug addicts. Sometimes it's a combination of all three. This evening I finally figured out exactly whom I do not like to work with. Which out of 15 wait staff its only 3 thankfully. Surprisingly enough it's almost never the people who fit into these narrow generalizations that tend to piss me off the most. I have yet to figure out why this is however. I think Anthony Bourdain says it best; maybe these people have just never been "fucked properly" in their lives. Whatever the case may be I find it totally unacceptable to talk down to people you feel are below you. Why do some people have this urge to feel superior to others by insulting them and treating them like crap? What on earth could they possibly be compensating for? It's just a job, Schmooze your tables, make some cash, and go home! It really is that simple. The sad thing is it's not even me that I'm referring to, hell I've been called worse by better, I can take it. But what really irritates me is that the scumbags think that I agree with them. I guess I'm supposed to be in this club of talking shit about my less experienced coworkers. God I love restaurants.

My dirty little secret

Smoking is one of the most disgusting habits on earth. Why the fuck I made the most ridiculous decision to start again beyond me. I smoked for 7 years and quit for 1 year, then I smoked for another 2 years and quit for 3 and 1/2 years. So here I am three weeks into my old habit. I blame it on a 50:50 mixture of boredom and stress. But really I should blame it on how fucking stupid I am! I haven't told any of my family because I'm incredibly embarrassed by it. So tonight I have decided that the two packs that I purchased tonight are it, No more for me. I can't wait for the headache to start Tuesday morning.

Summer Recap(picture purge)

Well I suppose summer is pretty much over for since school starts Monday. This summer has been an exceptional one for me. Although I guess I usually try to make the most out of my free time. So in sequential order here are the highlights of this season.

End of the school year I went to Malaysia with my friend Melissa whom I hadn't seen in 5 years. I ate lots of crazy delicious stuff, saw my first tornado(well water spout really, but it was still amazing), did my first canopy walk over the top of a jungle, visited my first sacred Hindu site, and saw the worlds largest twin towers.

I helped my friends try to finish their addition. Including running electrical wiring, CAT6, Installed vinyl siding, plumbing, knocked out a wall and installed a Parallam support beam, insulation, and installed a high velocity AC system. Unfortunately no pictures.

Camped and boated at Lake George in the Adirondacks. We also climbed Rogers Rock, well we went the easy way up.

Last but not least I moved to Buffalo. Which I'm finding to be a pretty cool city so far!

Kalbi

Tonight for dinner I made Kalbi. All modesty aside it was absolutely delicious. I got most of the ingredients from Sung's Oriental Grocery on Niagara Falls Blvd (between Sheridan and Main). It's a well-stocked Korean Grocery with plenty of hard to find items. The owners are also very pleasant and helpful. Maybe worth an (e:tinypliny) review.

Ok so I suppose I should be fair and critique my own cooking. The garlic I cooked with it sucked. But I stopped using it after the first piece of lettuce. It was the first time I have tried to make it, however I've seen it done literally, thousands of times. Fortunately I made way too much so I guess its Kalbi again for lunch tomorrow.

Buffalo Celebrity Spotting

I rarely, if ever watch American Football. I have heard some players names but couldn't pick most of them out of a lineup unless of course they killed their ex-wife or were part of a dog fighting club. So last night at work when somebody said J.P Losman was on the patio having dinner I thought, "who is J.P. Losman?". I suddenly realized who he was. Anyway long story short I didn't meet him but I thought it was nice of him to tell the kitchen directly that he thought everything was great. I suppose I don't really expect courtesy out of the alpha male jock, pro-sports type of guys, but I thought it probably meant a lot to the cooks who I presume all watch football. Apparently he is a regular there and from what the waitstaff tells me is a pretty nice guy to boot.

Hopefully this works

I spent the better part of the morning trying to figure out how to convert an avi into an swf. I'm hoping my efforts weren't wasted. Anyway about the video, I took this at Englischer Garten in Munich in June of 06. I just happened to stumble upon these guys who rigged some sort of rope system to the bridge and river sidewall and made an artificial wave. It looked like fun. Sorry I have no sound because my camera isn't quite that sophisticated.

Man I'm a dork!

I went to Spot Coffee to check it out and have a big cup caffeine this evening. I had a mocha in one of those massive cups. On top was tons of whipped cream and chocolate sauce. I must have sat there for an hour sipping away and writing and didn't notice this till I got home.

I hate liars

Not to whine about former relationships, but when someone drops off the face of the earth so to speak, there is usually a reason for it. My former girlfriend who decided to dump me and then continue screwing with my head for several months after has finally showed her true motive for her disappearing act. Not that I'm hung up on her by any means but I always thought that it was strange that she was calling everyday and visiting me several times a week after the break up and then poof. What irritated me most about the whole situation was that she denied she was in fact ignoring me. Although it was more than evident that she was. I had always had a hunch that she was involved with someone but I left it alone because I suppose it really wasn't any of my business. She stated to me on more than one occasion that she was not with anyone. So today I found out that indeed there was some sort of love in her life and I guess I'm just bitter that I was lied to. I am having some serious trust issues with people that I consider(ed) to be close friends and this is just another example. I'm growing really tired of people lying and just being all around bad friends. I'm honestly well over her but for what its worth I think I wouldn't have been so fucked up for so long after if she had just told me to "fuck off I'm with this other guy now" or even just to say "I don't want to be your friend". So I suppose this goes along with what many others on this site have been saying lately. That it's really best to be honest with someone no matter how much it hurts.

"Are you the pizza or the calzone?"

In a lazy mood today I decided to get pizza and wings at the closest place to my apartment. I guess the place is called NY Pizza judging by its sign, but the name on the menu says NY Style Pizza. Its on Allen St. between Elmwood and Delaware. I figured since it was close I may as well try it. That's about as far as I will take it however.

I'll start with the wings. Man did they suck! They couldn't possibly have been any worse. I have never seen chickens hacked to bits in a more unloving way. I looked past the disturbing appearance and tried a couple. They were gamey chunks of nastiness swimming in a thin orange film that I'm guessing was mostly fryer grease and a dash of redhot. They had absolutely no spice whatsoever, I didn't realize medium meant not spicy. I think these were the worst wings I've ever had.

The pizza was edible. The crust was chewy and thin and pretty decent actually. The cheese was...well cheese. It's pretty hard to fuck cheese up, other than maybe putting too much on, not enough on, or god forbid putting it underneath the sauce. The sauce was bland. It actually tasted like nothing. This seems to be a recurring theme with them. My pizza maker was also less than pleasant but I didn't really expect much. The place was also grubby but this is not always an indication of bad food. One of my favorite Greek places could definitely use a good scrubbing. I would say this is not a place I would recommend to get food, especially wings.
