Firefox, the slow monster.
Granted, I don't have a fast connection but 2 whole minutes?? 2 Freaking MINUTES!??? I have never seen this incomplete phase of the (e:strip) homepage in the past couple years.
The last time I remember seeing it was in... Firefox. before I ditched it. There was a reason I hated you so much. This is it. You are a slow monster.
I booted up chrome at the same time and gmail and estrip loaded instantly, even though I emptied the cache before. (i.e. nothing was pre-loaded in the cache).

Switching to Firefox on Fedora 16
I have not been on Firefox for the past many years. Chrome is my absolute favourite but right now, I am kind of desperate for a system that doesn't keep hanging and crashing on me when I try and write online.
It helps that the firefox homepage is this pretty orange that I love. :)
Let's see how smooth this ride goes...

All I want for Christmas
:-)
(e:metalpeter), this is what the song feels like in my heart.
The concept
The rendition.
And that is why I am in love with Michael Bublé's voice. I feel that Justin Bieber could have easily pulled off Bublé's rendition (well, if his voice changes a bit and he gets that deeper tenor/baritone-ish sound) if not for the pop-rot that they loaded that version with. I feel like they took someone with such an awesome singing and musical talent and are doing an equivalent of what-brown's-drugs-did-to-Whitney-Houston's-voice. Only this time it is what-overproduction-and-mindless-pop-did-to-Justin-Bieber's-talent. Choked and drowned it.

Fedora 16: "Soft lockup"
This is so insane. I don't understand what is so wrong. NEVER has been an OS so crappy as Fedora 16. I am switching. This is eating into my productivity.
Attached is the text file with the log of the "Oops" errors, which will hopefully show up when (e:paul) sees this message.
This is how it all starts:

Update:
I located this thread on Fedora forum with several people having random freezes on Fedora 16 almost everyday, sometimes multiple times a day, with varied hardware.
In addition, all the system rescue effects including ssh-ing remotely into the system are not working during these freezes. Nothing except a hard boot via the power button rescues the system. This is hardly some random whine isolated just on my laptop.I have added my information to the thread.
There is a bug-report for these odd freezes as well: One of these freezes now has a bugfix in the updates: Going to update my system and see if all this happens again.
EDIT 2:
More updates from the FedoraForum: A couple other users think the wireless module is the problem child.
Also, one of them reviewed my logs and said:
You seem to have rtl driver errors and also some apic timer problems.
Try adding "noapic" option to the kernel command line
Edit /boot/grub2/grub.cfg and put "noapic" you'll see some lines like
linux /boot/vmlinuz-3..... buncha options LAN=en_US-UTF-8 noapic
I am going to try that see if it helps.

Enabling REISUB on Fedora 16
See if it is enabled with
cat /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq
It will give you either 0 or 1.
If it is 0, enable it with:
sudo su
(enter password)
echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq
Next time your linux machine with Fedora 16 freezes or misbehaves in general, you are set to use the REISUB weapon.
Alt + PRTSC (or the SYSRQ key) +
R
E
I
S
U
B
-> issued in around 6 seconds with a second in between each alphabet.
Other ways to get around freezes and misbehaviour
- Ctrl+Alt+Backspace: End the X session
- Ctrl+Alt+F1 (or any function key from F2 to F6) followed by
- ps aux or
- top
- find PIDs of processes
- kill processes one by one with their PID
- kill -9 PID-goes-here

Fedora 16 "Oopses"
Take a look at the attached /var/log/messages. It found "oopses".
[txt]1211/Oopses.txt[/txt]
Where do I file such crashes and freezes? It is definitely a bug that either Fedora or Chrome people need to sort out. This has never happened in Fedora 15 which almost never crashed. Surely, this is a problem for many people? I have a feeling it is chrome-related because freezes and crashes always happen when I am on Chrome.
PS: (e:Paul): the txt attachments are broken. I tried pasting the log before in the message body and it did not work out. Some quirk made a zillion copies of my post. Every time I would click the edit button and submit some edits, it would make an extra copy and post it.

Justin Bieber
turned into rot.
by fame.
PSL: I actually liked that Christmas song before I saw the video. One word. Ew. I guess Mariah Carey is more pleasant on the radio that on screen. And I don't even want to talk about that little sweet kid who is clearly being overproduced and droned over by pop. What a complete waste of his talents. It's painful to watch.

Sad parrots
I probably don't need to shop till next year, which is exactly what I wanted because I have some insanely intense writing sessions coming up. We also stopped at the pet store where we saw these lovely sad parrots.
This one looked at me in such a sad way. I was really tempted to buy them to get them out of that small cage. But I am not sure I am a "pet-person". I read that parrots require a ton of attention. Otherwise they become anxious and pick at their own feathers. She was nearly $1600.
This is the male from the same species called Eclectus, maybe because they are so eclectic and have such a sharp colour difference between the males and the females.
I can't believe how sweet that voice sounds!
(e:matthew) told me about the African Grey parrot and its famed intelligence. The poor thing was trying to sleep in another cramped cage.
I felt so horrible for them. Imagine being taken out of a tropical forest where you lived, shipped across seven seas in a cramped cage and landing here in snow-laden Buffalo... Can't be worse fates than that. I hope some rich person buys them and gives them a good home.

- Click the heart at the bottom of anyone's blog entry to add it here ;(
a) click on the image you want to drag and drop
b) keeping it clicking you *hover* over the large orange area that says: "DRAG MEDIA HERE TO ADD TO ENTRY".
c) You will see the mouse pointer changing to a small box with a + on it. Do you see this? If you don't see this, dragging an image will simply load it in a new page. If you see the small box with the + on it, only then can you drag and drop successfully. This is true in both chrome and firefox.
Can you post back about whether you see the mouse cursor changing to a box with a + symbol (just over the big orange bar)?
What version does it say you have? Visit the page in Chrome as well as Firefox on every computer you have and post results. It could be a flash-related issue. Those buttons are flash based.
I am not sure I understand the second bit about firefox completely. What were you trying to do? Adding an image works in 2 ways on (e:strip). One is through the file upload button (that needs flash to be working). The second is through the drag and drop way. It works the same on both Firefox and Chrome. Chat lost the whole display images functionality a long time back...
I'm with (e:paul), as I wrote elsewhere, try chrome without extensions.
Maybe this is why people are still using desktop apps for writing and programming.
I wonder if its a chrome extension. Have you tried the browser in safe mode or without extensions?
