Kalifornia ponad wszystko (California Uber Alles)
Today's Polish Song is an example of that. It is a cover of the Dead Kennedys' California Uber Alles by Kazik Na Żywo (Kazik Live). For some reason, Kazik decided to do metal/hardcore covers of his own songs live. He also did some old school covers. This is one of them.

Prohibition
He is very prolific so it is very hard for me to decide where to start with Kazik. I reckon that an accessible English language song would be a good place to start.
"El Dupa" is a side project that includes members of Kult and other bands that Kazik has recorded with.
The song "Prohibition" was written as a protest against the banning of liquor sales in the towns that the Pope was visiting in Poland in 1999.
Kazik loves John Bonham and John Bonham samples show up in his songs when you least expect them.

I remember when records were banned because the word "fuck" was included.
To quote the MC5 "Kick out the Jams, Mother Fuckers!!!"

Karuzela cz 2
Today's Polish song is a cover of song by one of my favie Polish new wave bands Maanam .
This version was performed that Opole Festival in 2005. It is ok. All it does is make me want to listen to the original. The sound is not typical of what I think Maanam sounds like.

Karuzela z Madonnami (Carousel With Madonnas)
I think I first heard this song when I was 10 or 11 and I fell in love with it. The song was first released in 1966. This version is from 1970.
The music is by Zygmunt Konieczny. The lyrics are fragments of a poem by Miron Białoszewski
Wsiadajcie, madonny madonny
Do bryk sześciokonnych ...ściokonnych!
Konie wiszÄ… kopytami nad ziemiÄ….
One w brykach na postoju już drzemią.
Każda bryka malowana w trzy ogniste farbki
I trzy są końskie maści: od sufitu od dębu od marchwi.
Drgnęły madonny
I orszak konny
Ruszył z kopyta.(...)
MigajÄ… w krÄ…g anglezy grzyw
I lambrekiny siodeł,
I gorejÄ…ce wzory bryk
Kwiecisto-laurkowe.
A w każdej bryce vis à vis
Madonna i madonna
W nieodmienionej pozie tkwi
Od dziecka odchylona
— białe konie
— bryka
— czarne konie
— bryka
— rude konie
— bryka
Magnifikat!
A one w Leonardach min,
W obrotach Rafaela,
W okrągłych ogniach, w klatkach z lin,
W przedmieściach i niedzielach.
I w każdej bryce vis à vis
Madonna i madonna.
I nie wiadomo, która śpi,
A która jest natchniona
— szóstka koni
— one
— szóstka koni
— one
— szóstka koni
— one
Zakręcone!
Just step in madonna, madonnas.
And get in madonna, madonnas.
All the patient horses are waiting,
with their hoofs above ground they are hanging.
And the carriages are restless,
everyone is painted matching all the horses,
looking like the colors of the ceiling,
of the oak tree, of a carrot.
A stir from madonnas,
a stampede of hundreds
bolting off their hoofs.
Circling in fire in their roped-in cages,
once they were of games
and throughout every dancehall
with a will of vigor, burning flowers.
And in each carriage arm and arm,
madonna and madonna.
From childhood bent up,
she is stuck inside an unchanging time.
White horses carriage,
black horses carriage,
red horses carriage,
magnificent!
Just as a gift for the
complicated eras that are too sad,
everyday on Sundays
working for the midnight holy masses.
And in each carriage arm and arm,
madonna and madonna.
And no one knows which is asleep
and which one is inspired.
White horses carriage, black horses carriage,
red horses carriage, magnif

Rock & Rolling Love
I don't know much about this group except that I think they have a sense of humor and I'm not fond of the name. This is a long form video that actually has 2 songs in it. The first one is by the "Reds." It is supposed to be an example of bad communist-era Polish pop. And, of course, the second song (at 3:30) is by Afromental and supposed to be wonderful. Personally, I think the second song isn't all that much better than the first one. I think they are making fun of themselves in the first song. Despite winning awards, I don't think critics have been kind to Afromental.
That being said, I think this is a funny and enjoyable video. It's what passes for Pop music in Poland this month.
The MC tells a really bad joke in between the bands.
"Q: What is red and bad for the teeth?
A: A brick!!"

Body And Soul
C-Bool an old school Polish DJ (If my memory serves correctly, his style was house) with a good international rep. I don't know much about this song but I do know that that I like it.

I think we played neither of these because I remember the cover of the LP saying "Hot Butter". Mum also was a BIG fan of Boney M. My brother and I grew up dancing to beats of Boney M and random electro-folk 60s/70s/80s pop from all across Europe and US. Good times! :-)
