my throat hurts.

which sucks. i don't enjoy that very much. i thought that was supposed to end when i quit smoking. that was 9 months ago.

i think we have made a decision to move on the 2nd. so if anyone wants to stop by, we will be there. moving. and then we have to get back in the car and head back to NP on the morning of the 3rd so that we could go back to work. lovely, eh?

anyway, i need to go close my store. i think i'm going to go home, get ice cream and then nap.

ice cream + sore throat = mildly complacent.

i drank a little too much blue moon last night...
but luckily i started out the day snuggling with a purring kitten... unless you are (e:paul), there is no way a bad day could start out with a purring kitten!

lauren just went out to lunch with her ex boyfriend... i wish she would hurry back with some food...

so my question is this...

what is everyones favorite hot spots around elmwood? (and i don't mean for wireless internet access)

coffee spots?
cafes?
bars?

there is a place in NPZ that has the greatest food ever....

and I need to find a similar place..

also... i have a menu for 'just pizza' and noticed dandelions on several menu items... what is up with that? buffalo doesn't seem like the type of place to go all hippie tofu on me... whats the deal people?

ummmm yeah thats all for now.

one other question: is amy winehouse is really a white chick?

Buffalo has a plethora of very good places to eat, not just on the strip. We have been known.. *gasp* to drive out to the 'burbs to eat food.

Our latest discovery is Zhang's Buffet, on Union near the Walden Galleria Mall. They have pretty good sushi and made to order stir fry.

So, don't be afraid to go to places like Left Bank (amazing French/American) or Toro (a tapas bar) or Betty's (brunch never had it so good). You wont find much off beat or new cuisine here, but good food is aplenty.

I agree with everyone on the recs...
falafel bar is great. Sahara grill not as much so. Panos is 'eh', but I'll go. India gate- cheap buffet on wed night, and daily for lunch. Saigon cafe (thai), right next door, one of my faves. Solid grounds great breakfast. Bistro europa is good too, great wine list. Toro [neo-tapas], faherty's- good too. (no food at faherty's.) Globe is good for takeout lunch.
Spot is the 'social' coffee place, aroma a little quieter.

elmwood bars... there's coles and goodbar up towards 'my' end (north)- goodbar has a good beer list. as does coles. but i rarely go to either. then the faherty's/toro scene. I like allen st, too. Then there's a bunch of stuff on delaware, not too far away- colter bay, stillwater, and now the snooty fox [anyone been there yet? i haven't, but i've heard good things.]

They also have a gourmet shop in there as well which is interesting to look at, but I've never found myself interested in buying any of it.

BTW what a neat spot you have there in New Paltz! The menu looks cool.

Pano's I love - but then again I love mimosas and a little brunch on a sunny Sunday morning. Pano's is legendary, the food is good and the owner is a great guy. If you like Indian food, a local favorite is the India Gate near Forest on Elmwood - they do a lunch buffet and I like their samosas. You'll find a ton of things to check out and decent variety right on the street. I can't really say anything bad about any of whats available. There is a new European-style bistro called Bistro Europa which I hear is good, and also Mode (used to be Le Metro) on Utica and Elmwood is alright - I just checked it out last week and had a decent sandwich. Falafel bar - no frills and fabulous - near Bidwell on Elmwood. In the summer you may be interested in the Farmer's Market - local produce and products like fresh honey, dairy, loose leaf teas and other things. Lots of good looking berries if thats your thing for $4-6 a quart.

Spot or Caffe Aroma for your coffee - IMO the mochas at Caffe Aroma are better. Spot does have decent sandwiches, wraps, cold salads, etc. - if I'm up early enough on the weekends I head over and get a "Mike" which is ham, cheese and egg on a bagel with some aioli. If you like cookies with your coffee or tea I think Spot has some decent selections and all of them are good. Caffe Aroma serves alcohol and Spot doesn't.

I hear Solid Grounds is good but I've never been there. Its close to where you are going to live, so check it out and let me know =D

Pizza - you are sandwiched in between two good ones - Casa Di Pizza and Just Pizza. I love Just Pizza but it can be pricey. La Nova is another favorite and they have some frickin' great BBQ wings.

Bars - tough to say. For some offbeat fun (and if you don't mind chain smoking locals, which is illegal here and goes unenforced) then I would check out The Pink and Hardware, which are on Allen. Further down Allen towards Main St. you'll find Gabriel's Gate, which I love, and even still further down the street you'll see a selection of gay bars. I've never been in them so I can't attest to their quality so you may want to ask Paul or someone else which ones are better. On Elmwood the bars aren't bad but tend to attract suburban idiots who can't find any culture in Clarence or Williamsville. If I just want a drink and am trying to fly below the radar I go to Cole's (great beer on tap and in bottles!), McGharrets (hippiesh college age to twenty somethings bar, absolutely no frills and isn't for everybody), Faherty's (I know the bartenders but this bar does attract said suburbanites), Colter Bay and in general the Allen St. bars.

Lots of folks 'round here like Globe :::link::: as a place to lunch. Personally, i think the staff there are morons and the food is overpriced pap. But who's to argue with popularity?

Spot :::link::: seems to be the place the cool people hang (hence why i'm very rarely there) for coffee. Their tea selection is not too bad, the desserts i've had there are decent. I hear the food is good, too, but i haven't had any.

My fav food place on Elmwood is further north, between Potomac and Bird, Falafel Bar. Small place, but good mediterranean and great falafel. Some people like Sahara Grill better(might be the hookas, not the food though?), but the service there is the world's worst. Only go if you have a day to wait for your salad and think that misogynist assholes make good restaurant owners.

Hmm... this is getting wordy... well, what can i say? I'm a fat chick foodie...

As for dandelions -- in these here parts, that's more of an old school Italian thing than a hippie vegetarian thing. So no worries about Buffalo beomig a hippie town.. whew, eh?

stick your beef between two buns....

yesterday i spent about a half an hour filling out an online resume / questionairre for cingular. they called this morning and wanted me to come in for an interview.

umm... sorry i don't live there yet...

but the fella said to call him when i made it to buffalo and he would set me up with an interview.

SCORE!

anyway, i managed to deposit approximately 16 envelopes filled with resumes and sparkly clean delicious cover letters with addresses of many different sprint/nextel/cingular/cricket/etc addresses on them. I sent none to verizon as i have beef with the verizon store here in the mall.

did i really just say that i have 'beef' ?

anyway, in hopes of attracting all kinds of star wars lovers that may open up said envelopes, i was sure to affix a lovely star wars stamp on each of the envelopes. I saved Darth Vader for the Sprint store.

its going to be tough juggling all the interviews i'm going to have, and even tougher deciding which company deserves me the most...

sigh*

I just invited my boss and his wife to my going away party, and lured him in with the seduction of 'drunken slip and slide' he was panting with excitement.... at least that is what he said.

tonight i;m going to kick back with a 6 pack of blue moon and enjoy me friday night... just wish i could get out of here now.

rooaaaddd trip.

buffalo HERE I COME!

i think we are leaving around 5 am. lauren hates me for that. but i'm driving, right?

we have to get up to wilson and drop off a bunch of my stuff at my brothers house, visit, and make it over to my other brothers house in ransomville before heading back into buffalo for a 2 oclock double appointment at sheldon apartments and elmwood village apartments.

then i have to run around putting in applications all over b-lo

tuesday morning at 9 we are to call and confirm a noon showing of another apartment.

we also have to call about a 2 bedroom on ashland.

and do some more job hunting

and lauren has to go visit the college at some point.

BUSY BUSY BUSY

and I still do not know where i'm going to end up staying. the problem is now that my family is guilting me into staying with them. oh sweet jesus if they were to find out that i came to western ny and did not stay with them then they would be convinced that the world is ending... so lauren and i are just going and saying the hell with it - we will get to where we are getting and do what we have to do....

i did this about ten times just now and it makes me wonder if there is some reason i have forgotten that after 13 comes 14 then 15 and so on... perhaps its true...

360 days in a year

There is something about ancient knowledge that fascinates the crap out of me. The kind of ancient evidence that goes against what we know. We have an established history and millions of books that say 'this is the way it is'. And what interests me is the stuff that gets the panties of scientists and historians in a major knot. There are so many phenomena that are simply ignored because to actually look at it realistically would cause such an enormous shift in our paradigm of the world that nobody wants to even bother.
Anyway, I would go on forever about it, but instead I'll present you with my most recent findings.

This is from a book I'm presently reading.

The Aryabhatiya, an ancient Indian mathematical/astronomical work states:'A year consists of 12 months. A month consists of 30 days'

The ancient Babylonian year consisted of a 12 months and 30 days in a month.

The old Egyptian year consisted of 12 months of 30 days.

Plutarch wrote that ancient Rome (during the time of Romulus) the year was made of twelve 30 day months.

The Mayan year consisted of 360 days.

The Incan year was divided into 12 quilla of 30 days.

The Ancient Chinese Calendar consisted of 12 months each of 30 days.

In all the previous cultures, the addition of 5 extra days to the yearly calendar (and in some cases even the addition of a day every fourth) is indicated to have occurred around the same time.

This is the basis of the theory that at some point in the archaic past the earths orbital position underwent a change. Which leads to many other theories that I won't even get into. Because they involve everything from pole shifting, the changing height of human beings, floods, Atlantis, dual moons and the like.

the whole idea of height being related to gravity is a new one to me and only briefly touched upon in the book. It seems as though the idea is that the less the pull of gravity downward, the less resistance there is for humans to grow taller. There is speculation that there was some type of celestial happening that involved the moon, gravity and resulting in a pole reversal, axis tilt and a sling shot action of the earth moving further away from the sun in its orbit.

Anyway, the book that I'm reading is actually about Atlantis, but once you skip through the 'channelling of the ancient high priests of atlantis' parts then you get to the good info about ancient myths, stories and some scientific stuff that is all quite fascinating.

And James - i'll keep an eye out for those authors. And I don't know if you MEANT to say that we are NOT history buddies, but if you did i'm crying on the inside right now. It is a flood of tears enough to sink atlantis. And Mu.

Danial Borstein doesn't write hard academic history, which is good as that allows him to write fascinating stuff. You might enjoy The Discoverers. It deals with ancient knowledge, how we have come to know what we know, and the people who made those changes.

Loren Eisely. Anything by Loren Eisely. He was a paleontologist who would write about the human condition in the context of his field. Knowledge of the world is a central issue. You can get his work, which is some of my favorite writing, for pennies on Amazon. Phelestines.

These various civilizations each based their models on the universe on ones they imported from other places. Indian astronomers knowledge of the solar system spread into China, Babylon, to Egypt and finally into Europe.

By the Mayan's and Incans? They didn't even have metal tools and they built pyramids larger than in Egypt? But they totally received knowledge from aliens or astral beings or something. That is like having the combustion engine before fire.

ie; what do you mean the earth isnt flat?!

panty bunching doozies off the top of my head--creation of antibiotics and hygiene standards, Dead Sea Scrolls, Mayan mysticism, cave drawings, unearthed vessels, The Arybhatiya, quantum physics, Barney, space exploration, stem cell research, --etc etc etc-- variables that keep having to be added to this giant "life formula".

and yeh, like you said, new info gets a whole bunch of "this is the way it is" peoples panties in a major knot. And thats ok!

The book you are reading sounds cool. As a science nut (while believing that everything is related on some level), its neat to read about different theories. Would llike to hear more about your take on the changing height of human beings.

just spoke to a woman about seeing an apartment. even though i told her i'm presently making 40 grand a year and i manage two sprint stores that if i don't have a job before i move to buffalo then she won't show me anything.

'why don't you get yourself settled in buffalo first and then give me a call?'

explain to me why i would get 'settled' in buffalo in some apartment or another, and then prospect your shitty ass four hundred and fifty dollar a month apartment?

i stoutly informed her that

that whole conversation made me extremely pissed and dissapointed and nervous that i would not, in fact, find a job.

But if you are looking for a job like the one you have now it shouldn't be a big problem. The suburbs are crawling with money and thus plenty of high end cell phone users.

It might be difficult if you are a steel or auto worker as their employed number have gone from thousands to 6.

Then we have 950 Delaware (sheldon apartments) on the corner of hodge.

anyway - so they are both about $665 a month.... which rather frightens the hell out of me - but they include heat... so what... would that be equivilant to a $600 a month apartment?

I live in a tiny house. The square footage that I heat is probably... oh... under a thousand, that's my uninformed guess. (The house is thirty feet long by thirty feet wide, and it's one storey that's heated.) It's reasonably well-insulated. In February my gas bill was $180. This year was atypical in that it was very, very cold from January thru March, but barely dipped below freezing until January-- we had a green Christmas, I swear some of my flowers were still blooming. But it was extra-horrible from mid-January onward. You just can't predict the heat bills. But they'd probably average out around $75 if I did the math. Really depends on your square footage and insulation, though.

(The West Side is a crapshoot. Approximately every three houses are totally awesome and gorgeous; the one next door will be so-so but nice, and then every fourth one or so will be an actual working crackhouse. You really can't tell from the address, you have to go there.)

In re: your next post, jobs can be hardish to find if you want something real good, but I think managing a Sprint store is totally the kind of job that's all over in Buffalo. I mean, if you're really qualified? Hells yeah.
Buffalo has this reputation for being a place in which it is difficult to find work that is not McDonald's or equivalent, and I think the reputation is stronger than the actual fact. I do not presently know anyone who is unemployed who does not wish to be. I know a few underemployed persons who would like to trade up, but mostly they're either not looking super hard or aren't very good at looking.

So I'm sure you'll find something, but landlords are not exactly laid-back people, on the whole.

But our 1 bedroom apartment there had a very small kitchen, and because our unit had a balcony they were going to jack up our rent so we decided to move.

You can't go wrong renting from them, but it is probably possible to get something cheaper elsewhere.
