Yitg'dal

I had this dread today that someone who I knew was on board the plane that crashed.

An hour or two ago I got an e-mail from my synagogue mailing list informing us that our cantor, Susan Wehle, died in the crash. I didn't know her very well, but she was a lovely person, had a beautiful singing voice, and was very enthusiastic about her job. She was the person who would have done the blessings at Ari's bris if the Rabbi weren't around last April.

We'll miss you, Susan.

Mittens for Kittens

Every time I hear talk for/against the stimulus package, this video I saw a year and a half ago keeps playing through my mind.

I hope for all our sakes that President Obama will be careful to strategically place bacon in the right areas to fix the economy and not listen to stupid people who would dilute the spending into powerlessness.

Winging a guess

I'm at Duff's right now my car's getting some maintenance. And while I am looking at my plate of wings I ponder one of the great mysteries of life: why is something as bad for you as wings almost always served with celery? I've never understood it. Are you supposed to eat the celery and then pretend that it balances out the enormous amount of fat you've put into your arteries? Or is there some more sinister purpose for this bizarre paradox?

ROTFLMAO

Right now, I am laughing so hard that my stomach is aching and tears are rolling down my eyes. I almost never laugh this hard this genuinely.

Yeah, I guess I do have a really odd sense of humor.

The significance of 33

I turn 33 today. In an effort to avoid writing a haiku and to waste more of (e:paul)'s bandwidth, I will post my results of hitting up wikipedia for all significant 33's.

33 is the largest positive integer that can not be expressed as a sum of different triangular numbers. It is also the smallest odd repdigit that's not prime (unless we consider 1-digit integers to also be repdigits).

33 is the eighth distinct biprime comprising the prime factors (3 > 11). Its aliquot sum is 15; itself a discrete biprime (3 > 5) in the following Aliquot sequence 33,15,9,4,3,1,0. (Note 33 is the 8th composite number to descend into the prime number 3, the others outside of this sequence being 30,26,16,12) Since 33 is a semiprime with both its prime factors being Gaussian primes, 33 is a Blum integer.

The sum of the first four positive factorials is 33. Adding up the sums of divisors for the 1 through 6 yields 33. 33 is the smallest integer such that it and the next two integers all have the same number of divisors.

It is also the first member of the first cluster of three biprimes (33,34,35); the next such cluster is (85,86,87).

Since the greatest prime factor of 332 + 1 = 1090 is 109, which is obviously more than 33 twice, 33 is a Strmer number.

3 is the first number that repeats in Pi, making it 33.

deja vu

In a previous relationship several years back, I had the experience now and then where I dreaded the breakup, but when I contemplated how I would actually feel if we did break up, I felt a sense of relief. Especially when I actually got near to the point of breaking up a few times.

Being an employee of a business can be very much like being in a relationship. Things are getting increasingly dysfunctional at work right now, and my mental quality of life is being seriously diminished. To the point that I nearly forgot to pick up my son at daycare today. While I won't go into details, I'm feeling very much the same way I felt several years ago about this person that I dated.

Costume Cutback

The last several halloweens (with the exception of my sparse elf-hat appearance at (e:ladycroft)'s halloween party two years ago) I've attempted to go make an usual costume making use of a well-known cultural reference that is not typically the subject costume design. Two years ago, it was a "have a nice day smiley face". Last year it was "D*ck in a box". I wanted this year to go as the freecreditreport.com pirate complete with guitar, but the time constraints of new fatherhood make that unworkable. I'll still do something that's unique and a cultural reference, but I guess I'll have to settle for a bit of cop-out this year. It won't be great, but it probably won't make failblog.org
