Thanks Chuck Schumer

Dear Mr. Visco:

Thank you for writing and sharing your thoughts about America's financial crisis. I agree with you that giving the Secretary of the Treasury authority over a $700 billion dollar fund to stabilize the financial system, without any checks on his authority, or oversight of his actions, would have been a grave mistake. However, the severity of this economic crisis forced the Congress to act in order to save Main Street from further financial pain. If we had not acted when we did, small businesses trying to fill orders and meet payroll, students looking to pay for college, consumers looking to buy cars and so many others would have faced even greater economic hardships, which would have been disastrous for household wealth and jobs in our country.

That is why I made the difficult decision to support the administration's rescue plan after insisting on changes to the program to ensure that taxpayers will share in the rewards of recovery, that executives of these mismanaged financial institutions would not be enriched with taxpayer money, and that there would be effective oversight of the program. When the economy recovers, taxpayers should be able to recoup most, or all, of this money because the federal government will earn a return from any investments it makes in banks needing assistance. To hold the banks' executives accountable, the bill requires that all companies that benefit from government assistance limit how much they pay their top employees and, in many cases, eliminate golden parachutes entirely. And to guarantee effective oversight of the rescue program, major oversight mechanisms were written into the legislation, including the creation of a new Inspector General and Congressional oversight panel.

Finally, we forced the Administration to add protections for homeowners into the bill that address the eye of the financial storm - the foreclosure crisis. Of course, this is only one part of a comprehensive solution needed to get our economy back on the right track. Congress stands ready to deliver a broad-based economic stimulus package to invest in Main Street, create new high-paying jobs, and keep the engine of our economy going.

Again, thank you for contacting me on this important issue. Please do not hesitate to contact me again if I can be of further assistance on this, or any other matter.

Sincerely,

Charles E. Schumer
United States Senator

I've gotten letters like this from politicians, including Hillary Clinton. They are form letters.

i sent a letter to him in regards to the health care crisis. this letter was probably the same reply, except insert 'health care crisis' instead of 'financial crisis'

Dancing at Ohm again
Category: dancing
After reading (e:djkgunz,46758) I went dancing at Ohm last night with (e:terry), (e:jim) and (e:james). It was so crowded as last week but I still had a good time. I decided I like their dance floor a lot when its not crowded. I also realzied I need to start wearing ear plugs if I want to be able to hear for a couple more years. I tried wearing my gym sneakers to see if they were comfortable to dance in. They seemed okay but I missed my regular shoes which made moving my legs trickier than usual because it felt unnatural.

The first dj, who I think is the guy who wrote on here the other day was fun to dance to as was the second dj. Then the third dj was playing trance, which I generally like, especially when it is live like Dharma Lab or all the Goa parties I would go to back in Germany but this guy played what always felt like built up and never really hit it for me.

Maybe we didn't stay long enough but at 1:30 we left for Cathode which was packed like I never saw it before. I think it has to do with winter. If you took all the people that usually sit on the patio and put them inside it would always be that crowded. The lack of patio in the winter just about halves the size of the bar.

Saw a lot of people I haven't seen in a long time including (e:chris)

This is an almond fantasy.

although that does not appear to be my idea of a frosted almond fantasy, it still looks damn 'tastee'
james - 11/23/08 13:43
Thanks for dragging Jim and I out last night. I love going dancing and it is too rare a treat.

The god of tuna

Ortiz brand tuna in the glass jar at wegmans. I could only afford the
$5.00 can but rest assured I will eat the glass jarred on at some point.

If you like tuna fish and you never tried it, I would definstely
suggest it.

I have never had the Ortiz tuna but Elizabeth says its really good. Yesterday I found that Premier Gourmet is now stocking the Ortiz brand white anchovies!!! I have never had them because they are really hard to find. At $10 a hit I probably wont eat them often but I can't wait to try them.
james - 11/23/08 13:45
Tuna salad is my favorite snack in the summer. I use avocado instead of mayo and it is so good I lick the bowl. But, because of mercury I mark on my calendar when I last ate it so I don't miss an opportunity.
paul - 11/23/08 10:31
I think that too. Too bad you have to limit you intake because of of mercury;. It is the most polluted fish you can eat, especially Ahi and the albacore large tuna. According tot he Nation Resource defense council you should not eat more than one can every 9 days if you weight 150+lbs. THey have lot sof information about it :::link:::

It makes me sad. You know what has mercury too, those new "environmentally friendly" light bulbs. I refuse to use them any more ebcause of it. That and my house rejects them. Everytime we put one it, it fries in like a day. I probably should check that out.

I had sashimi at Kuni's yesterday, and I thought to myself, "Tuna might be the perfect food."
