opa died
Category: death
Opa wasn't my grandfather. He's the father of my 'babysitter'. Sylvia was the babysitter for all us kids, and we used to live next door. It's one of those deals where you kind of become family with some folks. Hence, I called her parents Oma and Opa.

On Thanksgiving day they were in a bad car accident. He never recovered from his injuries. It's sad. Good-bye Opa.
lizabeth - 04/16/08 12:31
I'd like to second what Felly said - we've all got people who, while not related to us by blood, are none the less our family. I'm sorry to hear about your Opa.
mrmike - 04/15/08 07:35
What Lee said says it all. Sorry for your loss.
leetee - 04/14/08 22:26

libertad - 04/14/08 21:44
Sorry to hear that lady. That is cute that you call him Opa.
fellyconnelly - 04/14/08 07:45
blood relation or not, its still a tragic loss and i'm sorry for it.
metalpeter - 04/13/08 11:53
I don't really know what to say but I should say something so I'll just say I'm sorry.

no bathroom for 4 days
Category: potpourri
I had a crack in my bathtub and they couldn't fix it; they had to replace the entire tub. I've been 4 days without a bathroom. I'm really hoping they will finish tomorrow!

I was shocked half way through when I saw the new tub in place, but not yet tiled in. Sand! They filled it with sand!

On a high note, I have a second date tomorrow night :)
paul - 04/06/08 11:42
I would go crazy without having a bathroom for four days - I thought not having a side parlor for four days was rough.
tinypliny - 04/05/08 17:50
Hey, give them a break. You are after all in the middle of the desert. I mean, what better filler than sand? :)
metalpeter - 04/05/08 13:38
That sand looks odd, but I'm guessing that they have some way that makes it work very well. I wish you good luck on your date and hope things go very good.
james - 04/05/08 13:28
Hopefully you can finally bathe in time for your date ^_^

enjoy
museumchick - 04/05/08 13:16
sweet... enjoy the date.

another doha first
Category: potpourri
Since I've been here there have been a lot of firsts for me. First time living overseas, first new car, first dune riding experience etc. Then there are a lot of firsts which are not necessarily my first, first, but are a first since being here in Doha. Such as my first conduct hearing, driving lesson, alcoholic beverage, birthday, etc.

The point of all that is to say I had another first last night that made me happy. I had my first date in Doha. By chance the guy happens to be the roommate of the girl I bought my car from. She invited me to the Rugby Club where I met him among 20 or so other people. Apparently we were getting along well enough for others to notice and so began the plotting of getting the two of us together. I guess it worked.

We had a nice dinner at a Thai place then got some ice cream and walked along the canal. It was simple, it was sweet. Maybe the fact that I haven’t been on a proper date in 6 years played a part in my happiness, but overall he’s just charming and highly entertaining. Cheers!

jbeatty - 04/05/08 14:47
congratulations on a good first date!
jason - 04/03/08 17:35
Wonderful! congrats!
metalpeter - 04/03/08 17:16
It sounds like it was a good date. I hope they continue to be good and hope things work out great. On a side note (e:hodowns) halfway across the globe comment was great wish I would have thought of it.
mrmike - 04/03/08 13:17
Very cool. Good for you.
hodown - 04/03/08 12:34
Aww, I'm so happy for you. All it took was a move half way across the globe and BAM- a date :)

long lost friend
Category: potpourri
I cannot find the words to express how incredibly happy I am. I lost contact with a friend some 8 years ago. Our relationship was special, conflicted between love and hate. So much so that when you're 20 you simply don't have the emotional intelligence to deal with it. When he moved away and we lost touch.

3 years ago he was visiting me in my dreams almost nightly. He told me I had to find him. I tried. I tried so hard. The dreams lasted for several months. I cried in frustration because I couldn't find him. Then, the dreams stopped and I thought he was dead. I was convinced I would never hear from him again.

Until two nights ago, when I get an e-mail out of the blue. I almost didn't believe what I was reading.; I couldn't believe it was him. I don't want to go into detail about how my dreams eerily parallel his life at that time, but it makes so much sense now.

I'm just so happy to have him back in my life. I really am.
leetee - 04/01/08 09:57
that rocks
soma - 03/31/08 12:06
Funny you mention weird dreams. I've had some over the past few months regarding work, and work has been a hell on earth as of late. I am really happy you found a long lost friend that you seem to have a long history and a connection to, I know that Ive lost contact w/ some friends and past girlfriends that I wish I could remain friends with or at least have had better resolutions and closures, at the very least communication. I hope that you get what you hope to accomplish out of this revitalization of friendship lost, seize the moment, seriously, many people dont always get that opportunity and dont get to say what they want/ mean etc.
