I've never been a fan of book clubs. I feel like I have a very specific taste in books (books that have a lot of angst and danielle steel novels, but no chick lit) and I could never see wasting my time reading a book someone else suggests and then sitting around talking about it. Mostly its the reading a book someone else picks out part that bothers me. That is until this week. I just finished 1984. I know, I know everyone read this book in like 4th grade and is so over it. I read it too, but ages ago and I'm pretty sure I didn't so much read it as buy the cliff notes and write a paper on it that still got me an A.
Anyways this time I really read it. Cover to cover. Twice I missed my train stop because I was so engrossed in it. Man was it disturbing and interesting. I've had dreams about it. And now that I'm done reading it I can't stop thinking about it, and how fucked up the end is. I feel like the only way to get it out of my system is to talk about it with other people who've read it. Thus the whole book Club might actually be a good idea realization..

Most Affordable TownsCategory: kenmore
My little hometown. Funny how they forget to mention the snow..
Kenmore, New York
Median family income: $59,875
Median home price (2006): $93,413
Kenmore joins the aforementioned Tonawanda to form a region the locals call Ken-Ton. The Buffalo suburb offers low-cost housing in low-crime neighborhoods. Decent single-family homes start around $70,000 there with many in the $150,000 range. More exclusive areas, like Deerfield Park, will cost you close to $300,000.

It seemed like every other suburb of Buffalo was on that list but Buffalo itself wasn't. Are we really that much more expensive?

VacationCategory: vacation
Yesterday I found out that mid-year bonuses at my job are all f'd up. In addition we now get year end bonuses in March of '08. Because my firm was bought out by a Private Equity Firm we changed our year end. Long story short I get a "year end" bonus which should be payment for 12 months but now instead is for 14 months with no additional amount for the 2 additional months. Anyways with all of this I was suppossed to get my mid-year bonus in July. Well looks like I'm not getting it till October. They tell us this days before we were expecting them. So I postponed my vacation in order to have enough spending cash. Well that and work is going to be nuts until the end of August.
Really the whole point of that long paragraph is I now have to wait until August 21st to fly first class. Really that's the highlight of my vacation. I'm really looking forward to it. More than I think is normal. I always walk by the first class folks when boarding and look longingly at their large leather seats. Then I cry on the inside a little again after the stewardess makes the announcement that the bathroom in the front of the aircraft is for first class passengers only. I have to pee like 2 times an hour and bathrooms are essential to me. I can't wait to have access the the exclusive bathroom.
Oh and also I'm looking forward to the free booze that apparently they serve in first class. I mean come on we all know momma likes to get her drink on while flying.

Pictorial Update on summer activitiesCategory: picture
I've been way to lazy to post anything of substance and that trend continues. As a matter of fact uploading the pictures almost took more effort than I could handle. So with out further ado I present you with pictures from my life:
Paul and Jess. We are so happy!
Aww, more P and J.
P and J at the beach
Paul had this weird obsession with getting a little dog like Paris Hilton.
Just because Emily is so damn sexy.
Cate wears her sunglasses at night
When brunch begins at Blue Moon you know drunkeness will follow.
Man Man show at McCarren pool.
Princess Carolyn and her boy Georg at Man Man. Aww.
4th of July Picnic. We do picnics up right.
More picnic.
Ben and Danelle, the newly engaged cuties..
Mark and Cate, also cute, but not engaged...

I just started a Danielle Steel book called "coming out" It's about ladies getting married. is that a chick book?
siddartha is a great book... was just telling somebody to read that book...
Herman Hess is a great author. Siddhartha is a fine book indeed.
If you liked 1984 pick up an anthology of Orwell's other writings. I have one called "The Orwell Reader" which I got off amazon for pennies used. It has a great essays and stories. It is great stuff to make you stand up to Fascists and Stalinists alike.
that's a great book!
do you do the harry books...because if you don't, you should!!!!
let us know if you read any other good ones. i always wish i was more of a reader and i love getting other people's ideas.
Ha! Great post.
I also just re-read an old (junior-high?) school classic: _Siddhartha_ by Hermann Hesse. It was excellent, really enjoyed it. I think I got a little more out of it this time 'round.
Hmm, I'm working my way through _The Kite Runner_ right now but maybe I should read _1984_ so I can join the club...
