Time Warner and FoxCategory: tv
If you have seen there ads the newest one shows some lady buying shoes coming in and using start over to watch her favorite show.... Well hold on that doesn't really work like that... Not all he stations (fox comes to mind here) have start over... Also it doesn't allways work right on shows that don't start right when they say they do... This Happened to me when I came home and tried to watch Bill Maher the show ended in the middle of new rules... Also what about live things like football that go over the time. Oh bye the way this is a problem with DVRs to from what I hear. So don't believe that kid playing baseball with his dad ad either......
Last night I really wanted to watch The Hurt Locker , Like a fool I trusted the ad. But not so much that I checked the channel it was on (The Movie Channel I think) and start over came up so I thought it would work. Go get food for the movie and football today and go in and no start over as an option on enhanced TV, FUCK! So one of the options is on Demand and of course that isn't one of the movies that the ondemand channel has either argh..... So I went to find some on demand stuff and found "Fan Boys" it was wild and was great to see Seth Rogan play two parts but what made the movie good really was the hot chick in it but was all the cameos those where the best parts. The next Movie was "Zombie Strippers". Ok Zombies and a strip bar it was awesome. Yes it was very funny and there where lots of tits. Did I mention it was funny. Oh yeah and they took zombies in a new direction (the effects are different on men and women and women have control, yes two strippers fighting on stage and the golf balls where funny)........
Now in Time Warner's defense they don't control what each channel puts on their demand station and when they are on. For example Starz has this thing they call early premieres where movies come on before they air normally. That being said (yes the on demand stuff is free but still) it would ve nice if they had more movies and specials on the ondemand channels....
There is the new service I have seen advertised where say you miss a program you can go back into the past to view it. You can go back I think 3 days. Again this isn't on all the channels...
My point here isn't that I'm bashing Time warner it is that these services that when they work right are pretty cool you can't depend on them, like the ads make you think...
Next things next the fox and time warner thing. It is time for those two to make a deal. I think they will reach a deal because it is suicide not to, both companies would lose way to much money...
1. Glee, House, NFL Football, Simpsons sunday night line up and Yes American Idol are the huge fox draws. If Time warner was to lose these here is what would happen.
A. Some people would just give up and not watch Fox anymore. Less people watching fox means lower rating and less people watch the comericals drop way off in value..
B. Keep Time Warner but watch Fox over the air. Well ad money wise again you had people watching time Warner who know watch Fox over the air so they lose money.
c. I need fox so drop my price on cable, oh you are charging me the same for less ok bye. Yeah a lot of viewers would drop Time Warner and that is where they lose the big money. Most of those people would go get another provider or maybe just go the HD route through the air....
I can admit that I don't work for a station or in braodcasting so not sure how the money stuff works other then that when everyone on friends wanted that huge increase in pay they all got it because they ratings where so good that advertisers paid so much money during those time slots that it was a drop in the bucket to NBC. So time warner losing fox and fox losing time warner would be a huge blow to both companies that they can't afforid. But there is another factor that I don't know how it works every net work has a local affilate and yeah Fox 29 would no longer be on cable and that has to effect how much local ad money they get. Well that would happen in every city with time warner. I think that might be why you see the scrols during shows cause they don't want to lose the money.
D. There is this X factor that no one can really count or quintify. What effect does this bickering between cable and stations do to the viewer. I as viewer like the shows I like and they should be there when they are there. It is bad enough when nights change and now one program I liked is on at the same time as another. This bickering could turn people away from both companies. Maybe they will decide to just watch shows on the internet with one of those huge sony internet TVs. Or maybe give up on TV and just wait for the good shows to come out on DVD and Spend a weekend watching the entire series. Who knows what it will bring. Maybe Viewers will find a way to watch the NFL on line...
The Bottom line is that making fair deals behind closed doors before the public hears about it is best for both the cable/Satlite companies and the stations....

Caffine and Alcohol aka 4 lokoCategory: issues
1. There is Claim that when you have Caffeine in alcoholic drinks that it makes it so you can't tell how drunk you are... Not sure if that is true or not but since it pumps you up it makes sense...
2. If 1 is true then can it be dangerous... Yes but anything can be. Smoke enough your lungs die. To Much alcohol you die. To Much Cocaine heart attack. This is true of most things. If you think about it makes sense. High amount of alcohol in a big can and many of these drinks are very sweet so you can see how it would be easy to over do it, in fact I did with Joose But it is very tasty...
3. But see Danger is the point.. If you drink something that constricts blood Vessels and then speeds up your heart or body or gets you moving it could be dangerous...
4. The Point is when something is Dangerous people want to ban it. Do you ban cars? No. How about ATVs and other dangerous things ? Um no. Here is an Idea how about some Education and teaching people how to be safe.....
5. Binge drinking is a real thing and people drink to get really messed up or chugging beers. This has happened for a long time and will continue to happen. Yes young people die from it all the time and it won't stop anytime soon. I think that the people who got really sick off of four Loko did so cause they where into this activity.. It isn't four loko that caused it, it is the activity the stuff is around 10 or 12% alcohol....
6. Yes when sparks came out and also Tilt They where marketed as energy drinks with alcohol. Now some have said that this confuses people that people think they are energy drinks. I do think that some people might think that... But they are only sold with other alcohol so you should know they aren't a regular energy drink so I don't buy that.
So I guess the way I Bottom Line this is that I think they should be legal and Just have a warning on them. Now I know that hurts the marketing but you still have most of the can or maybe you could make them have a cling sign that attaches to the cooler doors that is a warning. If a store doesn't have one then the their is some kind of fine from the FDA.. Everyone shouldn't be hurt by some people who can't control there alcohol intake... They should be Drink at your own risk.....
Now I do have one other issue about this entire thing. If this combo is so Dangerous then why aren't they going to go after the bars and restaurants where you can order right off the menu a Vodka and Redbull or a Vodka and Diablo Energy drink (very tasty at club Diablo). See there is this double standard that pisses me off. They won't go and make that mix illegal in a bar (how would you enforce it since they don't only sell alcohol you can't make them not sell energy drinks). But that isn't why. I think they are in bed with the bars. I almost wonder if the bars are tied in to this somehow. Yes I'm glad they aren't going this far cause I like that mix, I also like Jagger and redbull as a mix Yummy... But it is still a double standard. Why is it that a few people have to go and ruin it for everyone else... This isn't just in here in so many other things it just pisses me off.
On a side note Today I did buy two flavors of Four Loko one is grape and I forget what the other one is they have a bunch of flavors and I got a huge thing of a purple can of tilt. Maybe I'll buy more types just to try them , cause I won't be able to have them much longer ARgh..................
I remember there being Controversy over a Drink I liked called sparks it was pretty good. It tastes like an energy Drink but has alcohol in it... The Wiki Page (drink)
History
Created in 2002 by San Francisco-based beverage marketing firm McKenzie River Corporation, early marketing relied on word of mouth primed by giving away large quantities of the beverage.[2].Between 2003 and 2005, it had a 107% compound annual growth rate.[3]
On August 14, 2006, Miller Brewing Company announced it had completed the purchase of Sparks from McKenzie River Corp. for $215 million cash.[4] Miller had been producing Sparks prior to this purchase.[5] It is currently producing it under the Steel Brewing Company label of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
In September 2008, the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit watchdog and consumer advocacy group, sued MillerCoors, claiming that its Sparks alcoholic beverages that include caffeine are a health hazard.[6] Three months later, at the behest of San Francisco and 13 states, distributor MillerCoors LLC announced it would remove the caffeine from its Sparks line of energy drinks, and would change its marketing campaign.[7] "We're doing it to protect the public health of our young people and to reform business practices," said S.F. City Attorney Dennis Herrera.[8]
Maybe it is Just Me but I think this is all Schumer's Idea to shut these people down
Four Loko Drinks to be Prohibited by Government
Posted November 18, 2010 4:32 PM
Four Loko is the target of new legislative efforts aimed at protecting Americans from the dangerous mix of caffeine and alcohol. The federal government will make products such as Four Loko, Joose and other caffeinated alcoholic beverages prohibited for U.S. sale, a senator says.
Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., said Tuesday the Food and Drug Administration will rule caffeine is an unsafe food additive to alcoholic beverages and therefore prohibited for sale in the United States.
Last month, nine college students from Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Wash., fell ill at a house party in Roslyn, Wash. The students were hospitalized and one student almost died. "Let these rulings serve as a warning to anyone who tried to peddle dangerous and toxic brews to our children. Do it and we will shut you down," Schumer said in a statement Tuesday.
"This ruling should be the nail in the coffin of these dangerous and toxic drinks. Parents should be able to rest a little easier knowing that soon their children won't have access to this deadly brew." Drinks such as Four Loko and Joose have as much as two to three coffee cups' worth of caffeine and two to three cans of beer per container, a combination that can be extremely hazardous for teens as well as adults, Schumer said.
Schumer said he has been applying intense pressure to have these drinks banned because of serious risks to the health and safety of consumers.

So Never read this site before but they have an article with a video of part of a Vigil For Four Loko..
In the wake of its inevitable ban, Four Loko, the drink that nobody really drinks but everyone loves to memorialize, continues to inspire more feats of absurdity. On Monday filmmaker Ryan Jones drank the stuff to scientifically guage how potent it is. On Wednesday Assemblyman Felix Ortiz imbibed three in a nearby hospital to monitor its effects.
Last night fans of the "blackout in a can" gathered in Union Square for a Four Loko vigil. Fans of the drink sang songs of support, lit candles and told stories about their best (or worst) Four Loko experiences. Even the 8-bit techno band Anamanaguchi came to show their support.
The Village Voice was there to report this moving and somber event:
Soon, the crowd began to light candles and, in turn, use those candles to light their cigarettes. A few mourners stepped forward to share their Four Loko stories. "Every time I drank a Four Loko, something terrible happened," one said, then, when the applause settled, concluded, "And each time, I grew from it." A less enthusiastic round of applause followed.
I had another great example of how we do things backwards but from when I thought of it to when I went on line I lost it someplace...
I did want to add that I did buy 2 of the 4 lokos and will try one on Sunday during football when I have a long time to drink one....
I see your point as well. It definitely feels like the scenario where the events on Sept 11 messed up the whole flying-security-related hassle for everyone on the PLANET.
(e:James) makes a good point that I didn't think about.
(e:tinypliny) the two drugs together is a good point. The most abused drug in this country is Cafine (granted it is also the least harmful on its own) or maybe that is most used. Think about all the coffee drinkers who use it to wake up and then physicaly and mentally they can't wake up until they have coffee...
I think that this is a case of the way people in this country do things backwards. See we like to fight the effects of the sickness not the sickness its self (um war on drugs a to complex example to give here). So this causes people to get sick and almost and Die. Here is an idea lets teach people how not to binge drink and how to not over do things. I know from work that often times there is some thing that doesn't hurt anyone and is a great thing but there is all ways some ass hole who abuses the privalage or doesn't think it is fair cause it doesn't favor them and they go and mess it up for everyone. So companies put policies into place that wind up punishing everyone instead of getting rid of the bad people who abuse stuff looks like we lose out because some college kids go overboard ARGH.....
I don't think the ethical thing to do is to ban it, as there are a great many things that are unsafe in excess (like steak. Yum, steak). It is ethical to put a warning on there that will be ignored.
But, I also think there are far more important things for the FDA to work on. Like improving food safety inspections. There is not an expectation that you will get salmonella and die when you purchase scallions. There is an expectation that shit is going to get fucked up when you purchase an alcoholic drink.
If there is scientific evidence that the mixture is potentiating the lethal effect of alcohol (and I haven't looked this up) then I think banning it is the ethically correct way to go.
(e:Paul), I think it is one thing when people voluntarily mix two psychoactive substances together themselves and entirely another thing when the two reacting substances are being sold together by default requiring no voluntary cognizance of the fact that two potent drugs are in the mix - not just one. I know it sounds rather stupid because by this logic, cigarettes - that contain more than 4500 inter-reacting chemicals (at last count) are still legal... but then I am of the opinion that cigarettes need to be banned.
It seems ridiculous to ban it if they are still going to sell alcohol and red bull right next to each other. If its nit premises, people will just mix it themselves.

Football Homosexuality on GleeCategory: issues
Now they deal with the issues of being different, being picked on and Homosexuality on the show.. One of the most recent ones is there is this football player who picks on the one openly gay kid and not in the nice way. So he stands up to the guy finally and the end the hater kisses him. Yeah that was on last weeks show. But there was a tie in about if he tells anyone that he will kill him and at one point he winks at him also....
What I don't think the show is going to talk about is the fact that Homosexuality is often something people can't admit to for many reasons. But one of them is because you lose who you are and what you love. See even if this character new he was gay (and not repressing it) and loved the fact that he was. He could never come out cause the day that he did, bye bye football. Anyone (say a dad) who had football dreams for him would be hurt as well. Why would football be over for him (not that I ever played in school)? It makes a non sexual thing sexual. Tackles in the mind become grouping. Lets not even get into the locker room and showers and all the awkwardness. Now some might say this is silly why should people stay hidden because of haters. It isn't really about haters though but it is some. This is the same reason why male teams don't want women on the team and if they do some how make it, get a different changing room.....
But that takes me onto a different issue. Women and reporters and camera men in locker rooms. Sorry it shouldn't be allowed. The Locker room is a place for the team. Where people change and get ready and no Cameras or women should be there. What there Should be though is A media room that players and coaches can go into and get treatments if they want to and do interviews....
How many girls would change if they thought a boy was watching through a peep hole. Well that is what it would be like if someone came out when they played football. Yes some people wouldn't care but some would not want that person looking at there stuff. Also how about when the o line holds hands or are neck to neck in the huddle or snap towels now all that all boys stuff boys being boys loses what it is because of the assumption of everyone being straight.....
There really is no way of changing this.... But what really causes this is in our society Gender roles are so strong. Boys do this and girls do that.....
There was this prowrestler I liked Named Chris Cannon . He was kinda a mid level wrestler. AFter WWE bought WCW he kinda went no where. Some Time he came out publicly and not sure how high he would have climbed but it sure derailed any chance he had... It is to bad. As Many Wrestlers he died at a young age. I'm sure it is because he came out and it killed his chances. Look at how wrestlers dress and the close body contact how could that work knowing someone is gay......
This is tragic that this is how things are but that is how things are. It is a real issue and no NFL player has ever come out during their playing time. In Wrestling yes there have been charcters that hint at it, but that is just a charcter a way to mess with the other persons mind but to really be gay is different.......
My Point is that often times because of how Society Is (not just certain people) there are reasons people can't come out or admit to what they really are because it would destroy there lives and it isn't only from hate.... This is a real issue that I don't have the answers to.....
Well at work people do flirt and joke around sexualy but there really isn't touching or at least not anyplace I've ever been, but I have heard of men touching women and vise versa where it causes problems....
I think one of the issues with the army is that when you are at war or stationed someplace you often work and live in the same place or with others. So say two people don't get along who share barracks or a bunk on a ship (oh wait I forgot people not in the navy thinks everyone in the navy is gay, or at least that is how army used to bash the navy). Well that is a problem a big problem.
The Military is slow to change as it should be. You can't have an aramy changing cause something is new and then finding ou it is a flash in the pan as they say. But the down side is that the military should be able to make it so most people can get along. I'm not saying gay seperation. But really not just on sexuality.
I had another point that I lost somewhere.....
Your illustrating using a bar example is all well and good, (e:metalpeter), but we are talking work situations here. I don't see anyone hitting on anyone at work unless there is a strong mutually acknowledged attraction there!
The assumption that gay people are overtly sexual is even more annoying because somehow it seems to imply that they have the potential to be less than professional in a work situation. That is why homophobia = racism = every evil little prejudice that has wracked humanity. Believe it or not, we are still struggling against racism in this country and particularly in healthcare.
So it saddens me that we have another sort of internalized racism rearing its ugly little head in the form of homophobia. I am especially saddened by it in the case of India - where politicians and other insular bigots who made the constitution and the laws are SO SO SO brainless and dimwitted that homosexuality is actually still classified as illegal according to the Indian Penal Code. I don't think anyone ever was or ever will be arrested for homosexual tendencies, but the fact is we are not a society that likes to be honest - and this fact irks me so much. :/
I would not refuse it. But that being If I could refuse It I wouldn't need it but I agree with your point. But there are people who don't want blood (who need it) from people who are gay... Just like some people don't want blood from blacks and in some cases claim they would rather die... Reality is that they wouldn't really choose to die they just want blood from people they think they have the same moral code as.... But maybe they really would rather die....
Here is my thing about Don't ask Don't tell is... Should People who are gay serve yes! Should they have to lie about it no! But what I think gets lost is that Gay people aren't the only ones who have rights. Me personaly if the best snipper is also blowing the general I don't care if general is a girl or a guy. But that being said there are people who aren't comfortable around someone they Know is gay and some people it takes them over physicaly....
That being said. The Army is supposed to break you down and take who you are in the old world one person. Then retrain you to be a killing michine. Oh yeah and they are also supposed to do this in a way so that when your time is up and you go home you don't go crazy and you know you are out of the war zone... The Point is if they could do this like how they are supposed to, then everyone could get along and gay or black or looking like the enemy wouldn't be a problem.
In Terms of girls in sports. I can say I have only competed with them on a team of mine never against them. And in my case them being on the team didn't make them any less hot... Now for me If I'm wrestling a guy I want to win and a girl I still want to win but when her crocth is in my face it is an entirly different thng...
I do agree with you that people need to stop making that assumption. But I don't see that goin away any time soon. See guys assume a lot of stuff, like that girls want to see our dicks and that they want to do dirty web chats and stuff. We all think that hot chick at the bar with the big tits wants to blow us... So we assume that all gays want us thinking we might go that way, guessing a few might make that mistake. See from a logic perspective it makes sense that how does someone who is gay find someone who is gay, well in that process they must go up to men and some of them won't be gay. See it makes sense in a way. Like if I go to a bar and decide to hit on ladies they all will turn me down and a few will because they like women. Well how do women find other women with out going up to them (I know they go to Roxy's or have a meet up group or something) but somewhere along the lines they must get women who aren't into girls. But where the problem comes in is the next step thinking that "Sorry Even though I'm in a gay bar (ha kiding) I'm not into guys". Well people think that no isn't no to someone who is gay and that is an insult...
Part of my point is that it is a complex issue and I do hope the show goes into it a bit more, more about how if the football player came out it would ruin his life and how it really shouldn't be but is that way...
I think you have raised this point before in the context of "don't ask, don't tell" in the military. You make a point that it is tough to admit one's sexuality partly because one is engaged in activities at work/play that involve close contact/nudity.
CPR involves close contact. Would you refuse to take CPR from a person of the same sex if they admitted that they were gay? I think the problem is very artificial. It is unfair to assume that there is a heightened potential for sexuality in these circumstances - when you have no idea what it is like to be gay yourself.
The point I want to make is that not all close contact means sexual arousal. Think about it. If you were required to be in close contact with a woman at work or at contact sports - any woman, would you necessarily be attracted to her? I don't think it is likely. It is the same for gay people as well. Thinking that it is somehow different for them and they will be attracted in all instances of close contact is an assumption that heterosexuals need to stop making.

Hoping more photos from warm ups the grier thing and the game....
Nachos Grande (from the food place in the 200 level where you can watch events from). Not sure what all the stuff is but I got it with half Chili and half Chicken....

Sabres Part 2Category: photos
Oh Yeah Game ON!!!!
This Outfit coming up was odd even for a sports event for some reason it reminds me a bit of A Christmas Story....
Ok Back to the game shots maybe I should have put those 1st?
Vanek Scored an Amazing Goal in Overtime to win the game. On the way home I saw that Cereal at Wilson and Had to Buy it, it is my Favorite Sabres Player Ryan Miller
Not Sure where to start:
1. Never thought this would get so many Comments and there have been a bunch of great ones.
2. Debating the Future and where you think tech will is fun
No Technology is good or bad. It is how it is used. Granted there are a lot of crappy things that are bad. But there are also things that inspire creativity and Imagination. To bad they are mostly kid shows and things on like history channel.....
The Only thing with 3D TV is that you currently need glasses for it still.........
I had few other points that got lost someplace in my mind
Oh, and btw, the R. Lauren show was 4D because at 6:03 in the video, they actually sprayed the crowd with a mist of their latest perfume. hahaha
Wow. The concept of sleeper-spies. It came up in so many episodes on my former-favourite show (Spooks) that I think I believe it. :-)
Oooh (e:metalpeter), did you ever see the launch of that Ralph Lauren 4D show -->http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4S4xbKYw528
The future is 3D projection! I am telling ya, TV is not where the future is. :-)
"The Luddites were a social movement of British textile artisans in the nineteenth century who protested – often by destroying mechanised looms – against the changes produced by the Industrial Revolution, which they felt were leaving them without work and changing their way of life. It took its name from Ned Ludd." *From wikipedia.
I guess that sounds just about right. I am opposed to mechanization of thought and enslavement of spirit by the couch potato revolution sweeping the planet. I feel that it is leaving us without imagination and changing our way of active life for the worst. :-)
But, yes, I would like to have a 60" HDTV mounted on my wall as my computer monitor. Hmmmm... I would love a high resolution projector covering my ENTIRE wall even better, because of a smaller footprint, more mobility and flexibility. In fact, I am waiting for projector prices to come down so that I can get rid of monitor one day and just have a really really high resolution projector that can project my laptop ANYWHERE and would weight around 5kg or less.
(e:uncutsaniflush) - that comment is hot.
(e:tinypliny) - You wrote "Meanwhile, just throw your TV out." I think you are starting to sound like a Luddite. Perhaps you dont realize that newish HDTVs are, for all practical purposes, big computer monitors with tv tuners within. If you have a desktop or laptop or nettop or netbook with HDMI and a television set with HDMI, you can access the internet on your television.
I would suggest is that what you meant to say was "Get rid of your cable TV provider and get your network television content from the internet until the networks start charging for that as well."
Unless, of course, you think that computer monitors are morally superior to tv sets.
One Thing that got me thinking about this was what happened with the movie I wanted to see , but also my one TV's color is messed up so I have to brighten it up but it makes all the blues and red's really storng and faces are red. So I'm trying to decide how big and want kind of TV. If I could get good over the air reception with an HD TV That might be the way to go, wish I understood how those Sonys work besides I don't have the cash. I also wonder about if a 3D tv is worth it, and do they make 3D porn that would be wild?
In Terms of Paying for sports still not sure about the money aspect? But what I do know is that (don't watch college) is you can pay to watch College football somehow. Also NBC has sunday night football (again Haven't tried it) and you can watch it enhanced on the net... You pick the camera angles and view (like a video game)... My Gut is that football will stay on the air, but also you will be able to pay for games so you can watch what ever one you want. That is what the Direct TV thing is kinda. You pay so much and get to (assuming not blacked out in your city) watch every game. But what you are really paying for is two things. If the game is bad you can switch. But really so you can watch the teams you like. There are Steeler fans in Buffalo but good luck trying to follow them here. I do think that will go PPV over the Internet soon. I just think that Football is such a big screen event there will need to be more of those Sony Internet TVs for sale. I say about 5-10 years as the HD TVs start to lose quality over time of a normal set.....
1st of all I will admit some of this is new to me, I have never heard of the white panther party.... But that way of thinking that you explain does seem to make sense. If we believe what our parents tell us as do people here it would make sense that we could be used for their agenda. I have seen kids pre teen with signs that say I have two Birthdays (well my understanding is you can't be a kid and be born again but I could be wrong, that you have to lose faith or get into trouble and then find gods ways again, or something like that). The Point is if kids can be used at rally's why not spies it is a great idea (doubt it would really work)
Google has the Tech and has used it in China why not here. Now some might say that sounds crazy. Well aren't the two Koreas still at war. Don't have the news on the recent conflict of today or yesterday. But couldn't the US monitor all chat of all Koreans to make sure that koreans in the US aren't going to side with the communists and blow stuff up here so we don't back our allies... It isn't crazy we locked up Japanese people in camps....
My Political side could see Bush doing something like this when he was in office so that the people using the net could only get pro USA stuff. Oh you think that didn't happen in the past. I wasn't there but I heard that is how the News was in WWII. War Protest never. Now some people think that Obama and his side would like to control information and they have a valid point. What if (not saying he will) he sides with out allies and the Korean War II breaks out. Now lets just say there was no TV (forget the radio for a second) and all News was shows on the internet (just saying) The Government could control what we see and our views on the war.
(e:tinypliny) - My father was fairly high up in the Polish Military food chain. His military career was destroyed by my mother emigrating to the U.S. and bringing me. Also, my godmother's husband was some sort important Communist party minister. If you believe contemporary reports, during the Cold War, it was thought that children were groomed to be sleeper spies that would do the biding of their Iron Curtain masters once adult. Rumor had it that all children from behind the Iron Curtain had some sort of FBI file about them.
When I was at the University of Detroit, my circle of acquaintances included anarchists and people associated with John Sinclair's White Panther party. Some of them routinuely checked their files under the Freedom of Information Act and that's how I found out.
Oooh, you have an FBI file?! Really? Why?
(e:tinypliny) or should I say pliny the younger?? You assume that just because you are doing nothing wrong, the U.S. government won't fuck with you or even be interested in you. That is an erroneous assumption.
Apparently from what I've been told (I never asked for my records under the Freedom of Information Act but people that I know did), I've had an FBI file to the FBI since I was 6 years old primarily because of who my father was.
I assume everything that I do both online and off is of interest to the U.S. government.
When fear is rampant, chasing shadows is a feel good solution to fighting fear and terrorism for the U.S. government. it is important to remember that the U.S. broke every treaty it made with the "Indians". I that Joe McCarty's ghost is active in Washington,DC. And I think the new crop of McCarty zombies have even less shame than the erstwhile senator.
Orwellian paranoia is all well and good, but personally I couldn't care less if someone is spying on what I do day-to-day. I pity their life if they feel the need to spy on my super-dull existence!
Yeah - I didn't think of all those people. I guess people still listen to the radio and TV is here. I think the time is not far when the net will be a necessity for communication - like phones. Then, media and transmission will really start to change. (e:uncutsaniflush)'s example is a good illustration of such a change.
Meanwhile, just throw your TV out. You will suddenly find a lot of quality time and discover things you never thought of before. Better yet, come to salsa class with me during you regular TV time! :-)
(e:metalpeter) - I think your analysis is brilliant. Which is another way to say that I mostly agree with you. I was going to write something along the same lines but you beat me to the punch.
Unlike you, I think that eventually that there will be big NFL type dollars in internet content. I can forsee a day that internet content providers charge for subscriptions to their sites or pay per view for sporting events. I think mobile broadband internet content will hasten this happening. Already you can get NFL games on your smart phone. It's just a matter of time before charging for such stuff comes common place.
Imagine being at a Bills or Sabres game and being able to watch the game on your smartphone with the ability to control your own replays. I bet a lot of people would pay for that. But, as always, I could be wrong.
That being said there will all ways be TV and here is why..
1. You have people still that don't have cable they don't have the money for cable those people use normal TVs. As an example of this when singles went digital you had converter boxes so those old tvs would work... There will all ways be this part of society who doesn't have the money to go out and buy some wastefull computer so they can pay for a show it is pretty stupid to pay for a show you can watch for free.
2. The People on the fringe. Yes there are people who believe the internet is monitored like it is in China, and it may not be yet but some of it is watched by the government for sure.....
3. Got some bad news for the techs Analog is better then digital. I watch a bunch of TV. A slight snow to a picture is ok. But you know what isn't pixels and glitchs. Yes with digital there is all ways a glitch and you miss some of it if you watch long enough. Now the crazy people me included think that this is if you record it, it won't be in perfect condition makes you wonder if it is being monitored.
The Networks pay a lot of money for the NFL right and some other sports. Advertisers pay to put content on during those shows. Take all that money and give the teams that money and it used to be $1 over the salery cap. I'm sorry but I don't think there is that kind of money on the internet I really don't. I think the movement should be away from the Cable Companies. I think If you want hbo you can pay them and they send a single to you through the air and it is decoded.
In Terms of Security it is better not to have the internet have all the TV anyways. Say there is a cyber attack or better even the cable lines or phone lines go down. It could turn into mass panic and riots in the street. Now with an over the air signale all you need is enough electricty to recieve it. New Tech isn't all ways the best.
I do think that if the dishes can figure out how to on demand with out downloads and get as good as cable is it could be the end of cable. Again here in terms of National Security I think there could be away to send a signal that the dishes could pick up.....
In any event it will be intersting to see what happens. I say get out those rabit ears and watch all the stuff on HD on a nice tv is the future for some and for some it is Internet TV. Sony changed music for ever with the walkman maybe those new TVs will chang tv the same way?
I know you know about Dr. Horrible's sing-along blog. But did you take a closer look at how it was marketed? It was groundbreaking. It went directly from the net to DVD. The strategy was pure genius. It has outsold many other traditional TV shows (backed of course by some beautiful acting, superb music and an ultra-ridiculous storyline!).
"The Problem with that is if everyone turned off the TV then there would be no shows and since no shows then they wouldn't be on the net either."
AHA! Nopes, I don't agree with that. TV will evolve. It already has evolved. Look at Google TV: :::link::: Old mediums need to go out and new interactive shows will come in. Ads will still be on all content. For eg. look at youtube videos. There are subtle ads everywhere. Media is a dynamic concept (e:metalpeter). It is inherently determined by the behaviours of its consumers. I think traditional TV is on its way out and the sooner we usher in its demise, the better it will be for the evolution to more intelligent and interactively-engineered content.
Oh one other good thing about time warner is they have CBC (great coverage of some things wish we could get the other candian channels like much music and there is some channel that after 11pm has nudity). .....
(e:tinypliny) you bring up an interesting point. With out understanding all the money stuff there are some people who will do that, not I, Not Yet. I am kinda wondering if some day soon over the air waves will be better that is harder to control (ok seen way to many movies). The Problem with that is if everyone turned off the TV then there would be no shows and since no shows then they wouldn't be on the net either. That being said though I watch this show called The Walking Dead on AMC. There is no free way (at least legit) to see it online anywhere. Also at Amazon you could preorder the 1st season after like the 2nd episode. I think that for some the wave of the future is that you pay for an episode over the internet and then it has no ads. Ads are what pays for tv show it all ways has been and all ways will be. That is why PBS has donnors.... Ok back to more of this later Football Time.....
Just throw your TV out or give it away. Just think - all this agony will go away. Get a high speed net connection and watch whatever you like online.
The thing with fox happens all the time, the down side is that Fox decided to cry in public about. Cable and dish companies pay what is called a retransmission fee and that is what Time Warner and Fox 29's owners are fighting about. They need each other and will get it settled, but not without Fox 29's owner inspiring a little fear ahead of time to increase a little pressure.
