Spit for the Cure
Category: science
We had a massive recruitment campaign yesterday and persuaded around 1000 people to donate their saliva to cancer research at Roswell. It's amazing how much dependent our quality of research is, on the type and number of people who decide to participate.

Spit driven research

The truth is...

I have definite animal-hair related allergies. I found that out for sure over this weekend. I thought I had missed something growing up with a strict rule against having pets. Turns out, I just missed sneezing like a maniac and having the worst itchy nose ever.

What is interesting is the symptoms seem to have a latency period and kick in after having more than a few hours of contact with animal hair. Certainly feels like a delayed hypersensitivity reaction.

Also, being woken up at 3:45 in the night with a huge dog breathing and drooling on your face to be let out in the yard is not restful. I guess I will stick to the no-pet policy from now on.

Probably. I could have developed some kind of tolerance to animal hair antigens. Good point. However, I don't want to go through the phase of developing tolerance now.
metalpeter - 05/31/10 10:40
(e:libertad) makes a good point. Another question is if you where house sitting as it sounds like how do you know it is the dog and not something else in the house? Some times Pet hair is specific to the animal like dogs or cats or this or that. In other words you could only have an allegry to one kind of animal and other pets would or could be fine.
libertad - 05/31/10 08:22
Maybe you wouldn't have allergies now towards pets if you had them when you were younger?

Roswell Cafeteria
Category: eating out
Just got charged $5.76 for a grilled cheese sandwich with green peppers and onions - that was mediocre at best. The regular grilled cheese sandwich is $2.36. Grilled cheese sandwich with tomatoes is $2.69. Grilled cheese sandwich with bacon, tomato and lettuce is $3.39.

I don't like squabbling over charges at check out. I think it is just crazy that on the rare occasions that I do decide to get something from the place, I am overcharged without fail.

I am done with the Roswell Cafeteria. Once and for all.

Goodbye.

Sorry to say tiny, but that place jumped the shark a few chef's ago. They're making money, but the food is lackluster at best on it's killer days. Stuff I'd toss together in a rush to stave off hunger when no one was watching.

Ok here goes once and for all, it's time we cook together. Most times for lunch lately I've been eating little packs of this Gobi Aloo I whipped together and froze for lunchtime consumption.

I need some more new veggie indian dishes though, for now I fool around with this one. I was going to use tofu to make it a bit more hardy but had a pack of paneer and decided to toss it in there instead and it wasn't half bad, even if the rice sucked (I used Goya Jasmine and I might as well used short grain white cause it was awwwwful).

Pack a lunch, and if you're desperate for yummies for cheap send me an email and we'll see what we have in the freezer.

Yikes. That café is rapidly slithering downhill. I am not sure I want to go there again. BGH café across the street might be a much better option.

I just want to emphasize how chemically the crust tasted. It really was quite awful. The next time I see the manager I plan on asking him if the woman told him about it.
libertad - 05/26/10 13:52
Yesterday I got a piece of pizza there. In my efforts to try and reduce my plastic usage I carried it out in my hand. The crust tasted like oven cleaner. It made me so nauseus. I complained to someone but I don't know if they did anything about it. Today I ate at Au bon Pain.

Hmm... I guess everyone has their vomit overcharge/bad poop moments. I remember (e:Paul)'s grisly run in with the raw and rotten chicken bone. (e:Paul,39560)
james - 05/25/10 16:27
Really bad food. But, it is well on its way to becoming really bad poop.
tinypliny - 05/25/10 15:51
LOL, really? Is that an analogy for bad food or do you mean real puke? :-)
james - 05/25/10 14:30
I was charged 4.50 for vomit and was reminded why it is so much cheaper, nutritions, and delicious to just bring my own.

Yes!! I can't believe it either. It is the MOST delicious and fancy looking thing I have ever baked. Thank you, Maura. m/ You rock! m/

PS: More about the bread workshop later... (and possibly more photos, depending on whether I get them.)

PPS: Maura posted about the workshop on the fancy and delicious bakery blog:

I didn't realize you could make bread with quinoa!
tinypliny - 05/17/10 21:56
I have finished half of it already! (e:libertad), maybe you should come next time. We did hang out from 12 to nearly 5 but it was a tonload of fun. We also made pizza, all sort of crazy-fun teas, talked a lot, shared jokes and generally had a lot of fun. :-)

I have had slices with
- mascarpone and granny-smiths
- mascarpone and strawberries
- hummus and mesclun
- hummus and carrots
- yellow split peas, greens and stir-fried green beans
- toasted with mascarpone
- just raw. :-)

I didn't know I liked bread so much!
libertad - 05/17/10 21:37
Do you put butter on it? How do you eat it?
libertad - 05/17/10 21:36
That looks amazing. How did you get there? Did you need to stay 4 hours to wait for it to be done?
tinypliny - 05/17/10 11:05
It's a 100% whole wheat + multigrain (quinoa, oats, barley, rye, flax seeds, buckwheat, sesame, red-wheat... I think.) + honey + whole milk + rosemary + lemon-mint + olive oil + salt bread! :-)

My whole flat smelled like this yesterday and I didn't even bake at my place. Seriously, Maura = Magic. I wish everyone at (e:strip) had come to the workshop... There will be one every month and we could possibly bake a low carb bread next time. :-)
james - 05/17/10 10:23
What kind of bread is that? It looks delicious.
