Breakfast lentil Smoothie
Category: eating in
I have a new breakfast favourite and recipe was a complete accident.

I had chopped granny smith apples and carrots for a salad yesterday but in a moment of distraction, I tossed them in when I was sautéing green onions and garlic today.

When I realized that it was not zucchini but granny smiths, I stopped sautéing. The onions were still translucent and not browned. I added cooked french lentils and kidney beans, brought it to a boil and purééd it all. Garnished it with powdered coriander, cumin and fresh coriander leaves and thinned it out with water and freshly-squeezed lemon juice.

And that's what I am having for breakfast - spiced and steamy lentil smoothie with carrots, apples and onions. It's delicious! :-)

Mystery Insect
Category: buffalo
Does anyone know what this mystery insect is?
image

It looks like a millipede but is waaay too fast and light. I see it sometimes scurrying on the walls of my flat.

what is a google goggle? :)
enknot - 06/17/10 17:50
Looks like it's time for google goggles.

Ooh - what a cool idea. I don't have any such thing and often grab bugs with my hands (and get grossed out a day later if I rip out a leg or two).
libertad - 06/15/10 09:15
That is what I was thinking. I have a container set a side just for capturing and releasing insects. It is a plastic deli container and works great because it has a thin lid that I can slide under the container once I have the bug in it. I don't think I have ever injured one in the process. They can withstand losing their legs anyways.
tinypliny - 06/15/10 08:59
I think they are light enough that they float to the ground and scamper away. How do you capture them without squishing them?
libertad - 06/14/10 23:34
I hate those things. I know they kill other bugs and stuff but they "bug me out". I capture them and throw them out the window. I wonder if they are OK after the fall from a second floor apartment window?

way back when, after we had just moved to this house, part of pmt gave us a ride home very late at night. we offered a tour of the house. and would you know it, as soon as i turned on a light, one of those little creepy things ran right in front of us. i stomped the thing super quick and embarrassed. scared me...
tinypliny - 06/13/10 12:39
hehe I just threw that one into the trash. It was hovering dangerously close to my clothes closet and no one wants one of these crawling around in their shirts and socks.

scooterjeramorph!!!!

they are my favorite house pet, they eat other bugs supposedly, which is good. but i try to weed out the ones that feel comfortable scuttling around in the not dark by throwing them out the window.

tinypliny - 06/13/10 12:18
Scootergeramorph?! Is that a real word?!

Does it sting or bite?
paul - 06/13/10 12:15
It is called a house centipede. Some people call it a scootergeramorph, or something like that.

Spit for the Cure
Category: science
We had a massive recruitment campaign yesterday and persuaded around 1000 people to donate their saliva to cancer research at Roswell. It's amazing how much dependent our quality of research is, on the type and number of people who decide to participate.

The truth is...

I have definite animal-hair related allergies. I found that out for sure over this weekend. I thought I had missed something growing up with a strict rule against having pets. Turns out, I just missed sneezing like a maniac and having the worst itchy nose ever.

What is interesting is the symptoms seem to have a latency period and kick in after having more than a few hours of contact with animal hair. Certainly feels like a delayed hypersensitivity reaction.

Also, being woken up at 3:45 in the night with a huge dog breathing and drooling on your face to be let out in the yard is not restful. I guess I will stick to the no-pet policy from now on.

tinypliny - 06/11/10 18:41
Probably. I could have developed some kind of tolerance to animal hair antigens. Good point. However, I don't want to go through the phase of developing tolerance now.
metalpeter - 05/31/10 10:40
(e:libertad) makes a good point. Another question is if you where house sitting as it sounds like how do you know it is the dog and not something else in the house? Some times Pet hair is specific to the animal like dogs or cats or this or that. In other words you could only have an allegry to one kind of animal and other pets would or could be fine.
libertad - 05/31/10 08:22
Maybe you wouldn't have allergies now towards pets if you had them when you were younger?
