Today I got a renewal notice in the mail.
It has 3 options.
1- renew for $53.50. (43.50 for 2yr registration free, and $10 "use tax", whatever that is.)
2- renew, with NEW GOLD PLATES, and NEW PLATE NUMBER!! As if this is something desirable?! Those new plates are hideous. But, contrary to what I'd heard, the new plates are not mandatory. They're optional. But the catch- they cost extra. That deal is $78.50
3- the best deal of all. NEW GOLD PLATES! KEEP YOUR SAME NUMBER! for a mere $98.50.
Seriously? $55 to 'upgrade' to those gross new plates?
Nice try NY.
I am going to avoid the whole situation and move to Rhode Island. Their license plates are the best looking in the nation, IMHO. ;)
For real though, that's the other update here. I haven't signed a contract yet, so it's not official, but it looks like I'm going to take a job in RI (at my dad's hospital, actually). So I'll be moving back home sometime this summer. And Chris is coming with. :)
So, hopefully we'll find an adorable little house, and will have a guest room, so if anyone wants to come visit (we have lovely beaches!!), you'll be welcome!!

See? Ugly!!

And, adorable!
In a sick way I actually dig the "new" NY plates but actually they're Retro with a new twist, the top banner. I was reminded of this the other day when I watch "The Man that Fell to Earth" and in one scene a cop is radioing in David Bowie's Lincoln plates which where the same color. Also I do vaguely remember that these were the plate color before NY went to the White/Red Statue of Liberty before the White/Blue/Aqua banner on top.
Also I have to agree with you after riding through New England last weekend that RI does have a nice design. Although I do think Vermont followed by New Hampshire have a nice layout as well.
lol. i love the new "gold" plates. they look school bus yellow to me.... and i like 'em!
I don't drive, nor do I have a car so I may have this wrong. NYS was going to make it Mandatory to go with the New Plates. Now here is where I think I agree with many. It was a way to make more money for the state. In was a tax that isn't called a tax. The Plates where going to be more. Now that they have new plates they have to do something with them so why not sell them. This also makes it look like it wasn't a tax like it was a special plate (hint NYS no one is buying this idea). I don't know if for NYS if everyone starts off fresh that would be what is easiest for them, or if everyone keeps their same number. Hey less record changes I guess. I assume that the new fee is cause some people want there old number, hey it is easier to remember plus if you are a costume plate type of person you would surely want to keep that. Now in terms of the color yes they are ugly to me, but I'm sure some people like them, and I'm guessing unlike the white ones they look better when they are dirty. But I"m sure their are a lot of people who like the New ones since they remind them of the old ones that where that color.
I do have one question though? With the old plates they had some different NYS sports teams you could get on the plates is that an option for the new ones?
