Thank You Ms. Jenkins...
Category: unnerd
Ok.

There are a lot of people at work who are on the 8th floor (that's where all the wiggy wigs work, to quote a few) who's jobs are a grey fuzzy mess in my head. One of them, Ms. Dana Jenkins, is one of the Administrative board that seems to impress me every time I come in contact with her. I still don't know what her job is, but I like her. I like her a lot. I recently bumped into her at the gym and had the pleasure of introducing her to some friends of mine.

She keeps a blog that is "internal only" and that I'm the lead developer for it, but i like the things she has to say, and the imagery she uploads there too. She's an artist, and she paints water colors. The image in this blog is one from a blog she titled "Heroism, Boldness, Craziness, What Is It I'm Seeing In Vancouver?".

Here's an excerpt from the blog:

Almost every athlete, people at the very top of the top of their sport and their personal game, has talked about hard work as the key to their success. I've heard almost nothing about natural talent or good fortune (except in acknowledging the parents they were born to). Some have talked about planning to "peak" at the right time, more have talked about loving what they do, many have focused on performing better than they've ever performed before. As I listened I was so l glad to know that the kids who want to "be" Shaun or Apolo or Yuna Kim have heard that it takes dedication and commitment to achieve something great. But what is that underlying something that makes them do things the rest of us don't and achieve on a level that is rare. Are they bolder than the rest of us or just crazier?

I've also been thinking about everyday boldness. While less nightly-newsworthy, it takes a lot to believe in yourself everyday and to act on your convictions continuously, to step out of the background and be a frequent leader, to be the one who say "I will" rather than laugh at those who step up, to join with those who express optimism and a willingness to try rather than being a part of the pack that views them as the enemy. It's not easy to do this. I have seen people suffer because they've chosen a bold path. They certainly won't win every time but true boldness will find a way to try again. These people do things rather than talk about them. They find inspiration in others and are inspiring often without realizing it. I find them admirable.

I had this to say in response, but I didn't want to post it as a comment since I think the point of the blog is to be uplifting and motivational:

I really liked this blog Ms. Jenkins. It spoke directly to me. Not only do I like to snowboard, but it's been said from time to time that I am a bold person. It's a compliment that I enjoy quite a bit.

I think a lot of people will read this blog and identify with it greatly, but it seems that a very key element of the process isn't presented that has been haunting me lately. Boldness gone bad. Failure. Rejection. Regret. Remorse. The things that follow when boldness doesn't serve you.

I've noticed the emotional outcome of attempts like this cripple some into a life long lull, or force them to shift their perceptions of the world around to protect them selves from more of the same and as a result become less bold. I've seen many great people who live inside their own heads and scoff at the outside world for not understanding or not being ready for the greatness they have to offer. Luckily, liviing that way scares me more than failing, or else I think I'd be in a very different place...

Failure dosen't seem to stop him...

I guess I have more to say on this topic, but it's gone on long enough. Maybe I'll post a part two...

metalpeter - 02/26/10 21:27
Thanks for posting the video Shaun White is amazing. How he took that hitand was ok, no one will ever know. In Terms of being bold I do agree that when you start out bold and fail bad you lose your boldness. So maybe people who are bold at a later part of life are just more bold then those that lost it. In any event pretty interesting.
enknot - 02/26/10 10:55
Yeah. But I think it's only viewable by some administrative staff. Sorry. Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned it, but I don't see the harm really...
tinypliny - 02/25/10 22:41
People who are "bold" cannot be not bold. If they change, they were really not bold to begin with.

Because boldness is not equal to stupidity or even impulsiveness without thought.

BTW, we have an internal blogsite? Really?

zPhone? Zune Phone? No, no, no....
Category: nerd
(hey estrip, how's about a little healthy nay saying? I can't resist. This phone looks really nice, but I've been to the brain washing sessions the MS dudes throw and I imagine it went down like this. Ok, um well..., here goes.)

SOMEWHERE IN SEATTLE

...We'll call it Windows Mobile Series Seven. That'll make sense. It'll be awesome, it'll have all the stuff other phones have had for years and um... uh, XBOX live, yeah that's it.

But sir what if the people who buy this phone don't have xbox live?

Well they're stupid that's what

::yeah, yeah, yeah's all around. People are stupid, yeah ::

Um, sir, what about the people who bought the last three versions of windows mobile with the hopes to get xbox live on their mobile device? Are we gonna just abandon those people like the Apple people do?

:: chuckles all around {yeah, the apple people are jerks} more chuckles ::

Um, yeah.

:: total silence {that's a good idea. yeah sometimes you have to do it} shurgs and murmers ::

Well who's gonna wanna buy this phone sir?

Everybody, just watch the video...

You know Jim that is the one thing about this phone that I have hope for. Its the first time MS is going to rewrite their os from the bottom to the top. Since the war for the next platform will be waged on handsets itll make this next bout very interesting instead of the forgone conclusion we all thought it was...
jim - 02/17/10 17:52
I'm pretty happy they chose a novel approach to the UI, it's not just a me-too sort of iPhone type thing. Although I'm not sure how you tell what's clickable/tappable or not without actually tapping to find out, the UI is very flat.

Props to Microsoft from me.
jason - 02/17/10 14:12
Ok, I couldn't make it past 1 minute, and I only made it that far because I dozed off after 20 seconds and felt like I owed the video more respect. Nuh huh. Anyway, who the hell wants Live on their phone? Not me. I'm okay with Live being on my 360.
drew - 02/17/10 11:24
wow. what a boring video.

People complaining about how the $399 iPod was going to fail and was lame in 2001: :::link:::

"This was supposed to be a big deal?"

The thing to think about when looking at new Apple products isn't the tech list, but the relationship between the device and the user. I wasn't joking about cuddling before, this is like a tangible physical re-do of the laptop.

There have been tablets for years, but fully embracing a physical interaction model vs pen input will mean that people will be stroking this sucker while lying on the couch, and clutching it to their chests walking down hallways. People who own won will love it, and they'll share that enthusiasm with others.

And think how the iPhone was influenced Android and WinMo 7 (well, getting there)... if you hate the closed aspect of the iPad then there will be iPad-a-likes out using Android within a year, so basically the iPad will benefit the whole ecosystem by re-writting expectations.
vincent - 01/28/10 10:07
What I am getting a chuckle out of if the fact that Apple must have never done even one focus group concerning the name. From a marketing standpoint how can you really sell a prestigious product when the first image that most [immature] Americans get from the name is the connotation to a maxiPAD! Did they think through possibly that the product may be linked to "that time of the month?" :::link:::

matthew - 01/28/10 08:26
I think it's great. I agree with (e:Jim). It's like a Internet machine you can't crash. It's perfect for peole, like my sister, who only own a laptop beacause they want to use the Internet. Plus it has all the glory of the touch screen, which seems to be the direction most computers are going in. I'd buy stock in this.
joshua - 01/28/10 00:16
This smells of vanity purchase.
lilho - 01/27/10 22:15
i don't know or care what this things is, but i am so excited to see you tony!!!!!!!!!!!!! st. patty's day 2010!!!!!!!!
fing - 01/27/10 22:10
I have to admit I thought this was going to be much more exciting. Everything was pretty much known ahead of time to some point. The one thing that struck me is that the iPad processor is made by Apple! Not sure if this is better but it sure sounds like they really want to control how this performs. Yeah they can work closely with Intel but this chip can run fast and long. Besides that I think this is a pretty decent product. It might take a while to catch on but for me having one around when you are watching tv or cooking dinner might be nice. I usually have my laptop with me listening to podcasts or looking up recipes etc. This device might fit the bill for that. There is no way this is going to be a work device for anybody. You can pretty much rule out healthcare for now. I think that $499 is a very competitive device. Perhaps this might be subsidized by a 3G carrier when they finally pick one. Does anyone know if you have to buy apps for both the iphone and the ipad if you have both or only have to purchase them once?
jim - 01/27/10 21:01
I've been putting off buying a kindle since they came out a year or two ago, waiting to see what this is like.

So I've got to ask is paying $200 more for an iPad then I would for a kindle worth it? I'm not sure of the answer to that yet :)
zobar - 01/27/10 20:41
I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't get it. [I was also unimpressed when the iPod & Apple TV came out.] No doubt it'll enable some pretty cool technologies, but I'm more interested in the platform improvements that will trickle down to the iPhone. A lot of the stuff that's excusable on a mobile phone platform doesn't make sense on a tablet. Who wants a netbook OS with no multitasking? Who would pay for a hardware web browser that can't access all the SWF & FLV content on the web? What about running non-sanctioned apps? These types of things can't last very long on the iPad, but once they start allowing them on the iPad, it'll make less sense to prevent them on the iPhone.

- Z
jim - 01/27/10 20:06
Also, in 3 years the price of an iPhone went from $599 to $99. When you've got the 2nd or 3rd rev of this that costs as littleas an iPod touch does today, the value becomes more compelling.
jim - 01/27/10 18:31
People love tech they can cuddle with, and it does 95% of what probably 50% of computer users do outside of work.

It's $500 vs ~$280 for a Kindle and can do more then show books, so really the price is cheaper then I would've guessed (not that I'm saying it's inexpensive).

I think it'll do well. But we'll see :)
jenks - 01/27/10 17:29
yeah... I haven't checked out the details yet, and I am always a huge apple fanboy... but in this case... I don't get it.

It does less than my macbook, but is huge compared to my iphone... and costs $800?

Why would I want this thing?

Who WILL want this thing?

Lame.

Is it just a glorified kindle? (which is another machine I don't want/need/understand the appeal of)
mrmike - 01/27/10 16:34
It should make ibooks cheaper on ebay though
mrmike - 01/27/10 16:29
Me, neither. The phone is enough of a relationship for the moment.
jason - 01/27/10 15:56
I'm not going to be buying an iPad.

Key Change, Same Tune...
Category: nerd
After (e:Matthew)'s comment I rethought this whole thing and I'm going to officially clarify my position here.

Most of the people on this site are not the target audience for this device. This device is the personification of what makes apple great. It's a computer for people who don't want a computer, and don't want to be left behind by being a person without one. This thing toasterizes computers for everyone completely (there's no moving parts!).

But i'm not reneging my position. For a person like me this is a really lame device because i have everything that this device is in something else, so I was correct in calling it what I did, lame. An iPod G4 to a an iPod G3 user is cool, but a iPod to a new iPod user is life changing. I thought about what my mom's next computer should be and my dial mysteriously stopped here.

I can either get my mom a new PC that will cause crazy issues all day long and confuse and upset her and my phone will ring like clockwork every 3 moths when it needs reformatting, or spend an extra $500 bucks and never get a call again. In fact this is even better than a macbook or mac desktop because it'll save her from all the other confusing mumbo jumbo of having a computer that she never uses any friggin way. Her Internet bill will drop to $30 a month (that's 1/2 what Adelphia's charging people) and she'll never call me up to tell anything besides family dish.

This thing has a chance, and as much as I hate to admit it this time and (e:Jim) is prolly right.

i'm not an apple fan boy. I use their stuff when I love it, and when I love it I love it so hard it breaks my heart not to have it. As soon as a (e:Matthew)'s sister or (e:Enknot)'s mom gets one; LOVE. Pure nasty sloppy wet flicking noise making wake the neighbors PDA style love.

Now if they could only set it up so that you never need to use your computer to use it it'll be a show stopper. On top of it all the reason why they're putting out this uber lame version is because their easing you into the more complicated yet still quite simple version of the device that will take you past the last mile and compete with Google head on. In fact this device is the only thing that I can see that might have a chance right now.

When it has front and back camera and blue tooth (if it doesn't already) for head set you won't need the phone company to be a phone company anymore. Hell, Apple wan't going to take Google on first or without an army of stubborn paying customers behind them.

Yeah my mom's due for a new compy soon, and depending on how things go in the next few months if I have anything to do with getting her one, it'll be one of these things. (If only so I can bash it first hand *snort*)

Funny how close they were. I guess the newton finally lives.

jenks - 01/29/10 10:11
Yeah, all valid points. I mean, I'm sure the thing is cool and slick, in typical apple fashion. And will it be a cool machine for people who want more than a phone but don't really need a computer... sure. But for the techy crowd- we don't really need a third device that doesn't really add anything new.

But I already have an imac. and a macbook. and an iphone. and more ipods than i can count. etc etc. And it's rare that I don't covet the new apple product as soon as it's released.... but I don't think I need this one.
Yet. That may well change as soon as I get my hands on one. And/or get a tax refund. ;)

Any thoughts on the ipad vs kindle debate re e-ink?
enknot - 01/28/10 12:14
Only a few.
heidi - 01/28/10 12:12
I'm pretty sure my toaster has moving parts.

HAWT PEEPS
Category: conjecture
OK New category. Conjecture. It's where I drop some deep dark secret of my thinking that is probably just wrong to say out loud, but I can do what I want since I've prefaced it with a clause like "oh, I know you may be offended by this, but it's just conjecture so lighten up, I don't really think this way or at least not all the time, but whatever..." I digress let's get going,

I have a theory.

It's that extremely attractive people typically attract the most shallow of individuals, while their deeper more aptly suited suitors lurk in dark corners waiting to for a chance they'll never take, and everyone looses.

The marginally attractive people get to date the most since they're not so fugly that they don't have confidence and/or folks won't revile touching them.

And the supa homely get to have really weird sex everytime they have sex, cause really why would someone have sex with the fugly person unless they wanted to do something crazy that no one else would do.

I think that super hawt people are sometimes not as sweet as we imagine they are in our heads. Sweet ass, no shake. Huge member, no endurance. Nice face, bad breath. Happens. No one ever thinks of it when they see this kinda stuff:

HAWT
image

but she really needs a mint.

Worse, since hawt people are soo hawt, they're typically kinda dull. They've never had to try. Everything kidna falls into their lap. Which is where the dumb blond things comes from. Makes sense though. Why bother knowing anthing else if everything you want can be aquired by being ...you. Leaves those smart hawt people out in the cold.

Lastly, interesting hawt people have a love hate relationship with their hawtness. Only brazen idots and other dumb hawt people ever wanna be with them. It's sad, but often true. I'm guilty. I can't approach a supa hawt lady seriously. Supa smart ones scare me off too, but I want them. i want them all.

Ok, ok ok ok ok I'm ranting. I'm gonna stop now. Tell me what you think. Ever pass on a hawt person that you had a chance with? Ever get ignored by a timid person cause your milkshake brought too many boys to the yard? Ooh, better yet. Do this and report. Go "jokingly" ask a person who's too hawt for you out and see what happens. I'll do it to and report back, this could be fun.

fing - 01/27/10 22:30
Tony I think you are mostly correct. I think you have put this in some logical order. The thing I don't understand is your use of HAWT. Why would you take a 3 letter word and replace it with a 4 letter word. That would be like saying I am getting me some SECK tonight instead of just saying SEX? Does that make any sense? Although SECK is a real word I think you know what I mean. In this day and age shortening up words into acronyms or just making a word shorter is all the rage. Maybe using HT instead of HOT might be a good start :) I am also offended that you think I have no endurance!!
metalpeter - 01/27/10 20:08
What your saying makes a lot of sense. The thing is I would never go up to Megan Fox cause I know I wouldn't have a chance. The part where things get tricky is that when one person approaches another (not just a random meeting like you see a girl reading the sports and you ask her did the sabres win or she sees band on your shirt and wants to know where you got it or something like that) it is based on you finding something about them hot. But you still at some point need to think you are on the same level or at least close.

I think where things can get tricky again is that often times someone will let someone who is hot get away with more stuff in a relationship and sexually not saying that is a bad thing. Well again cause when you go out you are with the Hawt babe and when you are doing a 68 and she all ways owes you one you don't care cause you are eating hawt girl pussy.

But see this just leads to more problems because often people who are hot do get things because of it. Then that leads to people thinking that since you are hot you didn't work it. Best sports example is Tom Brady, a lot of people think he is a pretty boy and didn't work for any of his Success I think that might be why so many people think Manning is better but who knows?.....

If you are one of those hard workers who is hot it must piss you off if people think you get over on just your looks.

I will ad this as a final note I'm sure megan fox could get me to do some stuff that sexually I don't like, but I would try them for her. I bet Terra Patrick or maybe a couple other porn stars or Jessica Alba would get me to do stuff that I hate even more......
james - 01/27/10 11:22
Um. I'm like, super hot, and I am totally superfacial. I mean. Have you seen my face? It is totally super.

But I am not shallow. I, like, donate to charities for important things. Like, dolphins and junk.
jason - 01/27/10 10:19
Yes, extremely attractive people typically attract the most shallow of individuals. Usually it works out for them, because they're also typically shallow. Not in every case....but if you don't have to develop a personality or a conscience why do it? That's hard work.

The ones who are beautiful and have a head on their shoulders are very rare, but they need to connect with someone intellectually. If you're interesting yourself you have more of a chance than with the empty heads.
lilho - 01/27/10 00:26
ok wait, i think your theory is mostly but not all true, and depends on what kind of "hot" person they are and what area they live in and who they hang with.... but your theory is mostly true i think, true and sad....
lilho - 01/26/10 23:59
not all hot people are boring. some actually are super cool. but they are never single...
vincent - 01/26/10 21:44
Yea, I think you're on to something.
iriesara - 01/26/10 19:31
Not that I'm skinny now. Just wanted to qualify.
iriesara - 01/26/10 19:01
I concur. I've been on both sides. I've been fat & I've been skinny. I've been pretty & presentable as well as fuggo & homely. All in all I find it's much easier to be average. Too much vanity involved in vanity. Plus, as a skinny girl, I hate when girls look at you like your an asshole, and guys like you're a bitch. You just want to say, no, I'm actually a nice, interesting (I think) and somewhat intelligent person, not whatever you think I am by looking at me. And vice-versa.
It's all about the disarming-ness of approachability.
