Don't ask him - based on this picture he must not know.
Devastating. The article I pulled this picture from referred to this as the "Seinfeld look." This vaguely reminds me of another humorous picture taken of a presidential candidate in 2004.
If you ask me, the only thing missing from Obama's picture is training wheels, which depending on your political outlook may provide some apt symbolism.
Personally, I'm waiting to hear the reaction from the utterly humorless among us that couldn't stand to hear or see exploitation of one humorous moment from "their" candidate. At least he appears to be enjoying himself during some very well-earned downtime. Can't hate on that!
Seriously though, even President Bush has enough sense to put on a track suit. The hippest presidential candidate in 40 years can't really be that unhip, can he?

Obama - what is hip?06/04/2008 16:15 #44545
Office Guard DogShe does a shit job if you ask me.
She's doing the same thing right now. If she were on the payroll my boss would totally smoke her. Instead she gets cut off when the Tim bits arrive.
Watch this space for a political entry very soon regarding last nights speeches and how I feel about the upcoming election. I am going to utter some words that I've never imagined uttering before regarding Senator Clinton.

News of the Strange and OutrageousItem 1 - Exxon Mobil CEO lashes out at environmentalists and suggests that it is their "corporate social responsibility" to supply the world with fossil fuels. Since I actually work in this industry I find it appalling that he would associate its ideals to theirs, which in reality are completely incompatible. They have no clue what "corporate social responsibility" means and their CEO has now proved it. Oh, and instead of placating global warming activists he is provoking them.
Item 2 - A film of a real deal alien, alive and apparently blinking, is going to be shown to the media Friday in Denver. When things like this pop up, UFO fanatics usually completely overblow the whole thing. Then, when the video is shown everyone is naturally underwhelmed. I really hope this doesn't end up being a scratchy video with a couple of shifting pixels.
Item 3 - Notorious lefty punching bag, Rupert Murdoch, lavishes praise on Barack Obama and the Democrats while poking Olbermann in the eye. (e:jason) and I watched Olbermann last night - I'd have to say I agree. and
Item 4 - In what I am now dubbing the "Million Moaner March," some of Hillary's supporters are planning protests in Washington over what they feel is an inadequate, unfair and disenfranchising solution to the Florida and Michigan delegate problem. A particularly salient bit - "If either candidate dislikes the committee's eventual decision, the matter could go before the party's Credentials Committee in July or August. Any action it took would have to be voted on at the national convention, which opens Aug. 25 in Denver." If the final tally shows that Hillary would have won had all the votes counted, I guarantee it will go to the convention.
Item 5 - Famous opera house La Scala plans on staging an opera production of Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth." This is as disturbing as setting Don Rumsfeld quotes to chamber music. The funniest bit is that this will give the phrase "operatic kvetching" a whole new spectrum of irony.

Oh my god! I just made my first Paris Hilton joke! UGH! This could be a slippery slope to watching Entertainment Tonight.

I also heard that the alien is probing Paris Hilton, so it will be underwhelming.

Right. Someone had a camera just hanging out recording in infrared looking out their window? Nice. This will be entertaining to see.

Journalists Criticizing JournalistsWhen you are as bored with presidential politics as I am the only thing that will startle you is a tasty little morsel like this one -
It is about how small stories become big news and how the media is complicit in the proliferation of such news, using the recent Hillary Clinton-RFK example. I find media members critiquing other media members fascinating because its one of the few times where they are actually honest about the shortcomings in their profession. The twist - the author was witness to the media echo chamber that he criticizes in this example.
Its just one of many examples on how journalistic integrity is on the wane. Its a bit scary to think that a generation of journalism students are learning from this and presuming that this is the correct way to go about their job.

I took every journalism class my school offered (that's right, both of them--all three if you count, "creative non-fiction") and even though we considered the "loosening up" that comes with new media, standards WAY higher than they are now (and it hasn't been THAT long).
Sometimes reading the newspaper makes me angry.
Sometimes I don't even have to read it. Half-assed layout makes me angry, too.

In an environment where the Daily Show has more hard hitting reporting than the major news networks you know journalism is in dire need for critique.

Overall I like the Politico - they do use incredibly, unapologetically biased individuals but in general its one of the better places to find the latest word on politics. The people that comment on the Politico do seem like they carry a diverse set of opinions.

Useless but somewhat interesting newsIs there any other kind?
Creator of N'SYNC is going to the pokey - apparently the man made a decades long career out of bilking banks and individuals for $300 million. For his troubles he's about to become the jail pincushion for 25 years. Looking at the man makes me wonder if Karl Rove and Chris Farley had some sort of love child.
OMG! on Yahoo is the gossip section, so you know. (I'm talking to you Ho sisters and Mike but I suspect you're already familiar with these sites!)
In other news - will we see a quantum leap in space travel during our lifetimes? Scientists are working on developing anti-matter technology for future propulsion systems - as the article states, it would shrink an 11-month journey to Mars down to 1 month.

slow news day?
slow news day?
You can tell he doesn't usually ride a bike -- he's wearing long pants and they're not pegged or rubber-banded to prevent the hem from getting caught in or greased up by the bike chain.
I am crazy in love with these responses... I think they are the funniest I've ever had!
(e:z) - Now that I'm considering it, Barack Obama would make a fine catalog model wouldn't he?
(e:UCSF) - Tower of Power! Good band. I have to say I'm not nearly that conspiratorial but I did appreciate your theory. =D
(e:felly) - Kids across America should follow his safety example if you ask me. I'm thinking perhaps this was the only feature of Obama's attire that was thought out prior to his little two-wheeled suburban excursion.
(e:peter) - I agree that he looks like a smooth operator in this picture. Maybe its just a shock to me seeing this politician dress down. Maybe I'm being a little harsh - after all this is not nearly as offensive as that picture of Ted Kennedy with his shirt off on a sailboat. :::link:::
(e:trisha) - Crunchy or boiled? :::link:::
(e:jenks) - To be hip he should be wearing anything but that. I have no idea what juicy couture is, but I'm sure it looks good on some people. I suspect this probably isn't the case for Obama. =)
(e:tiny) - I can appreciate the utility of a mudguard, or a trailer arm. I wonder if he was actually towing something, or if he was all hitch and no caboose.
i think trisha is right tiny- I thought it was a funny mudguard too, but I think it's actually the arm attached to a little trailer.
I think anyone with a huge plastic/metal/fibre-glass mud protector is among the cycling Hip. Nothing you can say will shake my opinion. Those things are owned by the sensible and the stylish - they weigh very less, produce very little drag, make your cycle more aerodynamically maneuverable and most importantly, keep your shirt and trousers from getting the most-ugly-bike-mud-embroidery.
jeez josh... what should he be wearing to be hip? Juicy couture? UnderArmour?
the picture should show what that bar in the back is probably towing---his kids in a bike cart, i'd bet. can't sqwauk "unhip" at that--- when's the last time young kids in the white house belonged to the president? .....besides the ones bush eats, i mean......
So it is a side shot not a face on he has a helmet and sunglasses and I'm supposed to think it is really him, if it was not him and someone just built like him you could never tell. I like the picture my self. Dressed like that you know he is going someplace and is doing it as a relaxing way, hence the jeans. He doesn't have on exercise clothes or like a lot of bikers spandex and it isn't some I have to look like I'm mountain biking or some racing bike or even a trick bike with some pegs.
hey man... at least he is practicing safe bicycling techniques....
What is hip today, tomorrow is passe!! <g>
Perhaps, this photo is part of a carefully orchestrated media campaign to dispel the notion that Obama is elitist. If Obama was really one of the Elite, even the person he would hire to ride the bike for him would be dressed better than that. So Ha!!!
Why you gotta be hating on JCPenney like that.
