Whats going on with my hair?
Category: hair
Seriously, my hair is insane. Today i was starting to think my beard might be too long but then at the same time, I want to just keep growing it because I know I won't want to start over and I want to see what it would look like really long.

image

As I get older I can see how I am going to end up looking a bit lot my nonna.

jbeatty - 03/04/08 10:51
I really wonder what you would look like with a ZZTop kinda beard.
paul - 03/03/08 22:31
I just want to point out that I put nothing in my hair to make it stand up like that. Sometimes I think it is obvious that it just does that but other times I think that other people think I am using some sort of product to make it do its thing.
james - 03/03/08 20:00
Paul, normal hair can't do the amazing things yours can.

You have a gift for awesome big hair. Now rock out with it!
mrdeadlier - 03/03/08 19:37
I meant to tell you today that your hair was starting to look very Moz-tastic. :)

Purple Rice on New Spoons
Category: food
I love purple rice now. I wasn't sure how it would be but it is delicious. I got it in a box at Feel Rite on Deleware in Nrth Buffalo. It tastes so good and it a combo of starchy an dcrunchy and is very, very purple.

Here I am eating it on one of my new spoons. I decided to get rid of the hodge podge of old silverware we had from the many lodgers and friends and start with one united set of really hefty stainless steel ones . They remind me of the ones I wrote about from Brodo a while back (e:paul,37521)

They also beat the aluminum foil grade metal ones we were previously using.
image

I also traded my plastic spatula for a metal one seeing as I got rid of the teflon pans I have no need for plastic cook ware anymore.

image
mrmike - 03/03/08 13:22
It's a wonder it isn't grape flavored
fellyconnelly - 03/03/08 07:43
yeah i have to admit it sounds quite intriguing.. how do they make it purple exactly?
james - 03/03/08 00:55
purple rice? I have had black rice before, but purple! That is almost as awesome as a unicorn.

Horsefeathers,Buffalo Reuse,Old Editions

Horsefeathers
Today we went around to the various places to find door hardware. Unfortunately, no one had what we were looking for. I think it will require a blacksmith. Horse feathers over on Connecticut was the coldest fucking place I have ever shopped in. I am pretty sure it was warmer outside. I would never go back in the winter and I am sure I would never go back in the summer as it probably is too moldy and full of dog dander for me.

They have lots of stuff.

Looks like something (e:mike) would like.

Buffalo Reuse
Afterwards, we headed over to the ghetto to see if Buffalo Reuse had what we needed. They didn't either. The place was extremely disappointing to me. Same with the other time we visited over on Washington downtown before they over to North Hampton - which is an awesome street!!!

image

The prices were insane cheap but I would say 70% of the stuff was crap. There were some things that I couldn't believe anyone would bother reusing. They looked like crap from the get go. On the other hand, if you need a cheap door - it is the place to go. there were some doors as cheap as $10. also a place that requires hat, gloves, scarf as it is completely unheated.

I mean I think it is a good cause to keep stuff out of a landfill but I think they may need to re-evaluate what is salvageable. I know, everyone is going to hate me for saying this but I seriously think too much of it isn't going to go anywhere. maybe if they match up really poor people who need stuff with the crap that no one wants. I wish I took more pics so you could see but my fingers were too freezing after spending an hour at horsefeathers to press the camera button anymore.

The guy from Buffalo Reuse is supposed to come to our next block club meeting but I don't understand what they are going to say. Most of the stuff there was too craptastic for anyone to want in a fancy home and the people with fancy homes on our street are no looking to demolish so I am not quite sure it is a good match. Maybe if you need doorknobs, they have those.

On the way out of the East Side I spotted this nice house on North. I really liek this style house. I want to have one in the country someday.

Old Editions Book Shop
Then we headed over to old editions book shop in downtown Buffalo on Huron

This place was heated, unlike the other two shops, and had lots of great books and other collectibles. I think i could have bought a lot of things here if I had a lot of time and a library to fill. Or maybe if I read more or had interests outside of computing. Definitely worth the trip, I would go back.

image

image
image

They had some book on slang history where I learned the meaning of Queer Bitch
image

They had this fancy map that cost $4,000
image

image

Fianlly, I headed over to feelrite and the pet store on Delaware. They had this whole section of dog treats that were definitely marketed at humans. I mean I have seen dogs eat some nasty shit. I doubt they care if it has sprinkles on their sheep ear and eyeball goop crunchies.

image

I just wish somewhere had one of these horn chairs I really want.

mike - 03/04/08 17:37
ewww sheep ear and eyeball goop sounds so gross!
james - 03/02/08 11:11
leetee is thinking of Gothan City Antiques. They do have a ton of hardware.

It too is not heated.
leetee - 03/02/08 08:38
Paul there's a place over this way on Niagara Street you might want to check out. I'm sorry i don't remmeber thier name right now (it's early, and i think i have a mental block with the name, i seem to always forget it).

They are north of Amherst Street, and they have a whole bunch of cemeent outdoor stuff in the side yard.

Inside, it is the most incredible place i
have ever seen. Bring a hat, scarf and gloves in your pocket -- some parts are heated better than others.

On the main floor, off to the side in a wee room, there's a set of drawers (or there used to be) FULL of hardware for doors. There were hinges and bits and plates....

Then, up the stairs in a room that looks like it used to be a small auditorium or church room with a podium, there are antique architechural wonders... doors, pillars, moldings, fireplace surounds. Amazing.

I have been in a while, but i remember thinking that if we ever need a hinge or anything for a door in our old house, i would go there.

Or, if i just wanted to be amazed by the good, bad and ugly junk. :O)
fellyconnelly - 03/02/08 08:32
this post sorta reminded me of going out to auctions with my mom all the time... maybe yardsales too.

i can't wait for spring!

Deconstruction and Reconstruction
Category: linwood
Our house is slowly being returned to what it originally looked like. By the end of April it will look amazing. The additional space totally changes the dynamic of the room.

These first two pictures are before with the addon bathroom still there.

After work I took this pic but it was dark. Thew new window in the Hall makes it so much bigger and brighter. Now to replace it with some stained glass and 24 Linwood will be back to how it was, minus the wallpaper.

It is hard to tell from these pics but looking from the living room across the foyer, under the stairs and out the window makes it look huge.

ladycroft - 02/29/08 03:49
Have you looked at that Bullfeathers shop yet? They have 4 floors of amazing old Buffalo home parts. Doors, doorknobs (probably the ones stolen out of my apartment too), windows from churches, etc. You could install a piece of Buffalo history in your home!
james - 02/28/08 20:23
You should put a drain in the closet under the stairs and call it done.
metalpeter - 02/28/08 20:16
Should be interesting to see, sounds like an excuse for a party some time down the line. On a stain glass note. There is one danger if that is the only window that has stained glass it might look out of place you I'm guessing you will like it and eventully do every window as stained glass.
fellyconnelly - 02/28/08 09:37
you guys work fast! seems like last week we were there! are you going to install a commode anywhere else in the downstairs?
paul - 02/28/08 09:13
He is going to design it and I am going to try and cut an soldier it. The only problem with this is as soon as we master it everyone is going to want one. My mother already asked for two and we didn't even start yet, lol.
joshua - 02/28/08 08:57
Is Matt gonna make the stained glass or are you guys going to go pay for a window? Seems to me there wouldn't be many spares laying around for something like that.
mrdeadlier - 02/28/08 08:48
Yeah, I agree. Open it up all you want but leave the commode! It will make a great conversation piece for your upcoming home tour.
flacidness - 02/28/08 02:08
Extreme home makeover in the B-lo son! That looks really cool guys. Why get rid of the cold downstairs toilet though?

Floors and Bathrooms
Category: linwood
We decided to have the floors redone in the vestibule, foyer, dining room, living room, drawing room because we were thinking about being in the Linwood Home tour. Part of having the floors redone, involves removing the downstairs bathroom which was not original. We are supposed to have a beautiful free standing staircase but someone decided it was a good idea to add a bathroom under it.

So we wanted to move the bathroom into the drawing room closet or in the under the stairs closet. Unfortunately, neither place seems to want to work.

The drawing room closet is really just too small. It would be almost impossible to fit a toilet in the bathroom not to mention a not rail skinny person.

The under the stairs closet is awesome because it has plenty of space but the issue it is right over the electrical panel for the whole house. That seems like a bad idea having water over huge electrical panel. So the option there is to move the whole house electrical panel but that is a huge freakin job and I just don't have the time as the Linwood Home tour is April 27th and we are just about commit to be in it.

So what does this mean? It means we are going to give up the bathroom and not replace it right now in order to get the floors done and get the open staircase we wanted with the window. This is all with the intention of replacing it in the summer after moving the electrical panel in the basement. Either that or put a bathroom on floor three.

I can't wait till it is all open again and the window brings light into the foyer.

Here are some pics (e:matthew) took of the wall paper we found under the paneling in the bathroom.

Hey Paul I'm a little conffused maybe I just can't picture stuff. I thought when you first gave me a tour of the house you said if you look through this grate you can see this hidden room. I thought that it was a room with no way to get to because of the bathroom or some other construction how does that play into this? I wish you luck with replacing the floors I have heard that can be very pricey cause wood and labor are not cheap. I don't know how you want you house laid out or if this is even possible for the future. But what if after the tour you took out the bathroom but it in the basement then continued the stairs down into the basement. That way if you wanted to go to the basement you don't have to go the the kitchen to get down there. This of course assumes that the basement goes the entire length of the house. It is easy for me to suggest stuff since it isn't my place and I don't have to pay for it or do any of the work but just an indea.
matthew - 02/26/08 13:28
I did in fact pee myself! Lucky the wallpaper was found on the bathroom wall.
james - 02/26/08 10:09
Matthew must have been peeing his pants with excitement.
kosko - 02/26/08 09:40
Been a long time since I saw progress pics of the house, its really looking great.

Incredible work man!
kookcity2000 - 02/25/08 23:40
but where will the little ones pee?
