The journal area now stretches the whole way down past the user data.
I am now compressing surebert with gzip instead of javascript.
The themes and latest journal box is no longer pushed down in Safari.
Hopefully, in three weeks I will have a mactop and can do more testing in safari, although I think the site generally works in it.
Maybe I will opensource textBling tomorrow.

Buffalo Wireless OrgCategory: web
I received this message on the 6th but didn't notice it until today. this seems like a fantsic community internet asset and I wanted to pass along the info.
Hi Paul,
I am writing because I came across your site estrip.org a long time ago and recognized that it is an important community portal in the Elmwood area. Currently I am starting another community project in the area that I thought you might be interested in, based on your interests in technology and community.
Recently I set up the web site The site, and the list serve that I set up, are aimed at getting people together to create a community wireless network. As opposed to projects like Buffalo Wifi (http://www.buffalowifi.org), which just seems to provide free access points in areas convenient for businesses, Buffalo Wireless (http://www.buffalowireless.org) is modeled after projects that descend in some way from MIT's Roofnet project. Currently some of the most successful community wireless networks include Portland's Personal Telco Project and Seattle Wireless.
Basically, the project in Buffalo would aim to provide Internet access that is run by local communities and users, rather than large corporations. It would do this by the construction of a mesh network running protocols like OLSR (http://www.olsr.org). As we start the project, we need users interested in having access to the Internet that they control. I have already contact the local Linux Users Group and have several very technical users interested in helping to set up access points (although more certainly won't hurt).
The primary thing that we need right now in order to get the network off the ground is to find individuals who are willing to share roof real estate on which to locate an access point, and especially those who are willing to buy the access points that we will install on their roofs. I am trying to spread the word in the Elmwood area in particular because of geographic density and the large portion of the population in this area that already uses the Internet on a daily basis.
If you are interested, please check outlink and sign up on the list serve in order to receive project updates. In addition, I would appreciate if you would spread the word to anyone in the area whom you think might be interested in helping out in any way.
Please let me know if you have any questions or advice for the project, and I hope to hear from you soon!
Best,
Justin S. Leitgeb

Backdated JournalsCategory: estrip
Now that i have discovered all these journals from elementary school I can't think of a better place to put them than here. The thing is they were written in 1985.
I am debating how to handle this situation. The purist in my wants a system where they can be entered in for the appropriate dates back in 1985. Another part of me wants to write journals today, as I found the old ones now, and talk about it that way as part of my current existence.
It is such a hard decision. Does anyone else have old journals they want to migrate over?

No matter what date you put at the top, it's still a flashback. It would be cool to see them uncensored in a format as true to the original as possible. And even more interesting with some commentary from the perspective/context of here and now. Maybe keep the journal pub date current and include a FLASHBACK date at the top of the entry saying when they were originally written.
Bring 'em on!

wow, I wonder who has really old journals? I've been wanting to transcribe my written ones into an electronic format for years. With commentary, references, location, etc in another font or format for the purpose of others reading the material. With perhaps a section on what my current thoughts are of what I had written- for prosperity, reflection, entertainment etc. It would be a huge (and nerdy) under taking for me, as writing has been consistent (and lengthy) since about 1985, as well. There must be others with a similar interest?
even the option of pulling old entries from other, blogging sites (pre estrip) to here..
It would be an interesting and probably unique project to bring to fruition. Imagine the stories, history and perspective of peoples thoughts throughout the past few decades- especially for those who wrote without an audience. This would take remembering to a whole new level!!
I'll stop for now. We'll catch up soon :)

When I unearthed my meticulously kept journals from a very young age to 17 I did the sensable thing...
I burned them.
Back before this whole emo thing, no one suffered as much as I did. No one hated this world and the human filth parade more than me.
The journals were so horrendous it isn't even funny.
There is a show touring around called "Salon of Shame" in which people read from their journals of old, talking about the most embarrassing moments of their lives. It sounds like a crackin good show.

you could make (e:oldpaul) or something...
I've had more the opposite- I've found old journals that I don't want to DELETE, but just make private... I like the little eye button. :)

Fairy and the Terms of ServiceCategory: estrip
Paul
Well posted 1 blog so far, seems you group is rather unfriendly.
What you cannot promote yourself?
Two unkind remarks already, maybe your group is not worth hanging around.
(e:fairyastara) ,
Sorry that you feel that way but maybe you should have checked the terms of service agreement before posting your first journal (e:fairyastara,39209) about a commercial service.
Let me demonstrate what you would have seen if your read it:
Conduct
By becoming an (e:peep) you agree to not create and/or display (e:content) that:
1. is for commercial purposes, including but not limited to the sale of merchandise ...
Paul
I refuse to let people sell shit on the commercial free web space I worked so hard to shield from commercial influence. I myself spent thousands of hours working on this and have made no money from it. If you want to go ahead and talk about your life and spiritual beliefs people would take it a lot different than when you start out trying to sell something.
Just imagine it like this. A group of people in a club meet at Delaware park to talk about their lives, etc and someone they don't know comes up and says, "hey I sell crystal balls if you are interested." What do you think their reaction would be?
jacob - 05/17/07 06:46
I appreciate the clarification. It's nice to see this really is a community. A fact demonstrated by this very discussion. Cheers!

Not to mention that, by enforce, I did not delete the journal or even request she take it down. I just explained that it was against the terms of service agreement.

I think (e:jenks) explained it very well. I do however, selectively enforce this when I feel it is taken to far, or when it is new people who have little vested interest in the community. Like I let (e:imk2) talk about selling her pots, because that was not what her journal is about, just a facet of it.

i think maybe the diff is- say hello, introduce yourself a little, before diving into a sales pitch. It's one thing to promote what you do as part of your journal, I think it's different if it's the SOLE purpose for being here. I notice that fairy did not respond to the "tell us about yourself" comments and chose to just leave....

how is it any different than people promoting their roller derby games or djing? which by the by I don't have a problem with, i'm just saying I tihnk tryting to promote things you do or are employed is just naturally part of a journal cuz it is part of what you do/who you are.

Paul, you did the right thing. But you knew that.
Lets be honest, if anybody deserves to make money here its you. As far as I'm concerned overt sales pitches should be deleted immediately - it spoils the community and goes against the ethos of the project. If somebody is offended by that... life is tough. Wear a helmet. This lady should understand that it has nothing to do with being friendly or not - it has to do with exactly what you just described.

Have you (BWiFi) guys considered Meraki :::link::: ?
Buffalo Wireless map URL
Sorry, the URL for the Buffalo Community Wireless Project map is wrong in the previous comment. It is:
:::link:::
Thanks for posting this email to the site! I set up the initial site at :::link::: and have received a very enthusiastic response so far, with about 11 people on our list serve in under a week. We've also got five possible nodes on the map at :::link::: I also have a journal on estrip.org at :::link::: which I will use to post information about the project in the future.
BTW, the idea behind a mesh is that not all nodes have to be connected to the Internet. The problem is that the open-source solutions for this (mostly using OLSR on OpenWrt, a linux distro for embedded devices) are apparently kind of tricky to get running, and you have to have line-of-sight access between the nodes. Anyway, more later. Thanks again for posting this info!
This sounds really cool. I'm a bit hazy on the details of a mesh network (i.e. do all nodes have to have an internet connection or can they just connect to other nodes that do in an ad-hoc sort of way)
I think I'm going to investigate this and subscribe to the list-serv.
Thanks for sharing this, (e:paul).
