Well this is more of a pre-announcement but I am getting rid of the date drop down in favor of the date selection cloud. Months with more journals are bigger.
Here is an example from the development server showing my journal with the new style of date selection. Each month is a link. Looks like I was a much busy blogger around this time in 05.
I have lots of other updates coming soon as time warner can get my internet straight for more than 10 hours and I have some free-time from the big project at work.

We lost the artvoice best of buffaloCategory: artvoice
Same as always, we lost again. Maybe next year (e:lilho) will vote. The food was tasty again. I particularly liked the ribs.
I still can't upload anything on my time warner connection or even access my gmail.

i actually love that Wilson Farms and believe it could be the best convenience store in Buffalo. After Rudy's of course that is, but that won't win, its in the 'burbs.

First of all it is all about the amounts of votes. If someone has heard of a blog then they will pick that one the same thing with best buffalo website. It isn't like you have all these places and you rate them it is really a popularity contest. It is kinda like when WWE has bikini contests and the fans never yell at who is the hotest the yell at the fan favorite it is kinda the same thing here. Oh Josh When I used to Work there that Wilson Farms was the best store in the city. It was basicly a small supermarket. It also was the highest grossing one in sales. Part of that is the selection of items they had and some of it was all the hot cashiers and Stock Boys like my self who did a really good job and a few of the managers. But in terms of voting you had so many people who shoped there that it gets a lot of votes. The awards are really about numbers. In terms of hearing about (e:strip) there isn't a lot of press out there. In a way that is kinda good. What I mean is that if (e:strip) got to big then the community aspect would be different. You might have 30 groups and each group of friends was like 20 people and none of the groups interacted with each other. But that being said I think it would be good for (e:strip) to expand.

Exactly Josh. If best means riddled with panhandlers and degenerates on a daily basis, yeah it must be up there with any shithole in the city.

Its a complete sham that they cannot appreciate the idea of a community blog site. Every year the winner is usually a local blog that virtually nobody reads yet certain people that give away these awards are aware of.
At least you got a free meal out of it, but the "best of Buffalo" awards are ludicrous anyway. Who actually believes that the Wilson Farms next to my house has been Buffalo's "best" convenience store?

i know, i know. you don't have to make it seem like it was my fault though. and anyway, who says you have to win an award to be the best???? competition is a dangerous thing.

Artvoice Best of Buffalo 2007Category: artvoice
Be sure not to miss the Best of Buffalo party, Monday April 30 at the Town Ballroom (681 Main St) from 6-9pm, with complimentary food from Buffalo's best restaurants, and live music with the Skiffle Minstrals and the Steam Donkeys. quoted from artvoice
Ya, so we are nominated for best web site in Buffalo. Let's see if we win this year, of if it will have to wait till next year. Food is great though.

That sounds like a great time but mondays are bad for me. I know the site and Paul has some tough competition I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Paul won. It is hard to know cause I have no idea how many people read artvoice and out of that how many people vote. I will have my finger crossed hoping of a victory in both.

Category ChangesCategory: estrip
In order to make the site more intriguing and welcoming to new members in our push to expand to at least 500 writers we are going to put the top 20ish categories right on the front page so people can click on a category that interests them and see all the journals relating to that category.
Up until now you could create any category you wanted for your journal and you still can but we combined some categories for the rating purpose. You may notice some of the categories on your journals were changed to match this new system. For example, we combined the categories of phtos and photo and put them all under photo. You can still create any category you want but if you want it to be linked on the front page, try to keep it in one of the categories that already exists. The greatest part is the top 20ish list will always be changing to reflect what people are talking about. For instance, if there is some sort of freak disaster in Buffalo and everyone starts writing about that, that category would move up the list.
Here are the first categories we combined
PHOTOS took over for photo, photos2005, photos2006, photography, photography2005, photography2006, pic, pic post, pics, pic time, pictures
WORK was combined with jobs
POLITICS was combined with political
PEEPTALK was combined with peeps and epeeps
POETRY was combined with poems and epoetry
there may be more in the future we will keep you updated.
IMPORTANT: for miscellaneous we are choosing to go with (e:jason) 's category of POTPOURRI.
Remember, it is important to put a category on your journals so people can find categories they like later on. It also makes it easier for you to go back and find a certain journal you are looking for.
Any categories that have more than 30 journals assigned to them get displayed in the top categories cloud on the front page.
We will also be releasing a new system for quickly updating categories. Currently there are still 12,700+ journals that do not have categories and hundreds that have a category which is more like a subtitle.

Great idea. :) Maybe if I'm not lazy I'll categorize some of my blank posts.

Mike really wrote it. We are teaming up for summer 2007. I changed it to categories with 20 journals or more for now to make it more interesting.

there's no way that mike actually wrote that. there are no typos and proper use of punctuation everywhere. i think i'm being tricked...

estrip.com seems to be goneCategory: estrip
So I wrote them this letter. I hope they are willing to sell it as I am so tired of explaining that we are not estrip.com. I might ask for some donations again depending how much it costs.
Hello,
My name is Paul Visco and I have operated a non-profit blogging called estrip.org since 2003. I noticed that estrip.com is no longer around and was wondering if you would relinquish the domain name registration so that I could use it for our site. Because we are non-profit I don't have very much money to work with but I would gladly offer you $200 to allow us to have the domain name.
Thank you for your time,
Paul

Well, that didn't work out (e:news,38942) I can;t believe they are squatting it and charging $5000. ITs probably even more now.

I have an audition with estrip.com next wednesday. I am afraid they will be back.
but I like the idea of the date cloud.
I agree caro- I miss the numbering too.
One thing that I kind of miss from the previous "user was an entire db table" days was the numbering of entries (e.g. (e:carolinian) #32 (e:paul) #1250, etc), as it helped give me an idea of how a particular post fit into the grand scheme of all the other posts and to what an extent their journal was a snapshot of an (e:peep)'s life (i.e. if a post was #3000, you get the idea that for years the person was writing about every single thing that happened to them on (e:strip)). I think it would be great if you found a way to bring this feature back.
You might be able to do this elegantly with a custom aggregate function (assuming MySQL supports those yet, which I don't know off the top of my head).
