Israel

Law: Raising a pig on Israeli soil will result in the murder of said pig.
Country: Israel
Explanation: Israel is a Jewish state and pigs are not "kosher" to eat. Therefore, raising of these animals has no purpose for the "good" of the country.

I don't understand why the law must go as far as killing the pig. They could at least send the pigs to other countries so they may be consumed. A perfectly good food source being killed is a waste just because you yourself won't eat it. I understand their thoughts behind not wanting to eat pigs but at least have the pig be useful somewhere else.

Canadian radio

Law: 35% of a radio stations content must be "Canadian Content".

Country: Canada

Citation: To qualify as 'Canadian content' a musical selection must fulfill at least two of the following conditions:

M (music) -- the music is composed entirely by a Canadian.

A (artist) -- the music is, or the lyrics are, performed principally by a Canadian.

P (production) -- the musical selection consists of a live performance that is (i) recorded wholly in Canada, or (ii) performed wholly in Canada and broadcast live in Canada.

L (lyrics) -- the lyrics are written entirely by a Canadian.

It seems right since american plays mostly american music. Some stations do play a lot of canadian bands like the Bare Naked ladies, Avril and Sum 41. But there are a lot more american singers and song writers then canadian so a mixture is alright.

Mexico

Law: Bicycle riders may not lift either foot from the peddles, as it might result in a loss of control. Also, anyone who whistled at or annoyed a bicycle rider could be arrested.

Explanation: After a coach killed a bicycle rider in a hit-and-run incident in 1895, efforts were made to pass laws for the protection of riders.

Law: No dolls can be burned that resemble prominent personalities

Explanation: Beginning in colonial Mexico, likenesses of Judas were burned by inhabitants for unknown reasons. Whether is was in imitation of burning dead heretics in effigy as was done in the Inquisition, or a remnant of pagan celebrations such as the Roman Saturnalia, the Judas burnings took hold in Mexican society. By the 1800s, these celebrations had become more of a carnival than a religious festival. The Judas figures transformed into likenesses of powerful leaders in Mexican society that the lower classes wished to poke fun at. The celebrations became so raucus that in the mid 19th century, political leaders wished to take action restricting the event.

Water Law

Law: It is unlawful to refuse a person a glass of water.

Country: United States

State/Province: Arizona

Explanation: In the summer-time, with temperatures reaching topping 120 degrees,
often people will need water, but may not have the
money to pay for it (mainly applies to homeless).
Hence, the law. It is very much in effect today, with
businesses being reported (and heavily fined) who
refuse to supply water to those who ask for it.
Convenience stores are the primary businesses who uphold
this law.

Costumes meetings

Law: Organizations may not hold their meetings while the members present are in costume.

Country: United States

State/Province: North Carolina

Explanation: To discourage members of the Ku Klux Klan from operating within the state, certain measures such as this one were taken. The KKK was known for their use of white hooded costumes during meetings and demonstrations for purposes of remaining anonymous as well as inflicting fear on others. By making these actions illegal, the organization's power was somewhat weakened.

Panhandling

Law: Panhandlers must first obtain a $10 permit before begging on the streets of downtown Memphis.

Country: United States

State/Province: Tennessee

City: Memphis

Explanation: This law was enacted in an attempt to limit panhandling in downtown Memphis which is a main tourist area. The panhandlers were becoming so numerous and aggressive that it was decided that something needed to be done. After the law was enacted, the local police have much more leverage in dealing with these types. The ordinance is mainly targeted at "aggressive panhandlers" who are more likely than "passive panhandlers" to scare off tourists, and therefore reduce tourism income

Oh Boy

Law: It is illegal to say "Oh, Boy."

Country: United States

State/Province: Georgia

City: Jonesboro

Explanation: After the south was destroyed during the Civil War, former slaves who were now free had no place to go. As a result, they had no regular money, and sadly, little or no food. Many former slaves lived in Jonesboro the city, working for whatever money they could earn. Unfortunately, there was almost no work for them due to the economic downturn. Sometimes, when the richer gentlemen came to town, they would want their horses cleaned. Former slaves, some of whom hadn't eaten in days, would fight over who got to clean the horse. This would earn them enough money to eat for the night. As a result of the fights, many were killed, and were others injured. Because of all this, the city of Jonesboro passed a law saying that these wealthy people could no longer come to town and call for these former slaves. How did they used to call them? "Oh, boy!"

Wedding

New Jersey
After a wedding a man went to a wedding reception where he was the life of the party. Suddenly, however, everyone noticed he was missing. When he finally returned, more than two and a half hours later, he explained to everyone he had been tired and had gone to take a nap. When the bride and groom finally reached their apartment late that night, they found it completely looted.

This story surprises me because it is so sad what happened to the bride and groom. The man had a teriible reasoning and excuse. I wish the story actually said if the family knew the man or not. I am guessing they didn't but in this case he must have found out their house number and information he needed to get to their house and steal. But then why would he return? If they didn't know him he would have never been thought of again because they all would have just thought he left for the day but he comes back with all intention of having fun? Now he is the center of attention all over again

New Jersey

You cannot pump your own gas. All gas stations are full service and full service only.

It is against the law for a man to knit during the fishing season.

It is against the law to "frown" at a police officer.

In an attempt to "foster kindness" in the citizens of New Jersey, the month of May is designated "Kindness Awareness Month".

If you have been convicted of driving while intoxicated, you may never again apply for personalized license plates.

The third Thursday of October is designated as "New Jersey Credit Union Day" and citizens of the state should observe the day with "appropriate activities and programs".

Car dealerships are forbidden from opening on Sunday.

You may not slurp your soup.

Automobiles are not to pass horse drawn carriages on the street.

It is illegal to delay or detain a homing pigeon.

It is very certain that many of these laws do not exist in present time and if they did the state would go mad. Considering the last two wouldn't really comply all too well with today's society. I am sure with the New Jersay traffic people would love to pump their own gas so things would go a lot faster. Personalized license plates? I actually believe that having that kind of punishment would work because I see those things all over the place and it seems to be very popular. I don't think people would want to give that up. By the way...Do men knit at all? Let alone fishing season. I rarely hear anything about men kniting.

Robbery

Kentucky
Two men tried to pull the front off an ATM by running a chain from the machine to the bumper of their pickup truck. Instead of pulling the panel off the machine, however, they pulled the bumper off the truck. Scared, they left the scene of the crime. Their bumper, along with their license plate was still attached to the ATM.
ATMs do not seem to be the best thing to rob. Every story I heard involving them ended with the people involved going to jail and not getting a dime. They would have gotten away with nothing either way but you got to remember to take the bumper.
Indiana
A man walked up to a cashier at a grocery store and demanded all the money in the register. When the cashier handed him the cash, the man fled--leaving his wallet on the counter.
I don't see why his wallet needed to be out in the first place. Unless he was olike the criminal from a few journals ago that wanted to buy liquor. In both cases involving your wallet is the worst thing to do. Leave it at home guys.
Unknown
A man went into a drug store and announced his intentions to commit robbery. He pulled a Hefty-bag over his face to conceal his identity. He did not, however, cut eyeholes in the mask and was tackled by a brave customer.
Think ahead. You have to cover your face first and make sure to include holes ahead of time. save yourself the trouble of having someone tackle you into the ground. A grandma could have done it for heaven's sake.
