Bye Bye Buffalo?
Well I came back to Buffalo 4 years ago....and I might be leaving again. Lost my job last month and there is nothing available in this town! The jobs are terrible and the pay is worse! Going to FL next week to prospect jobs & apartments.
vincent - 01/23/11 19:47
It is a tough economy everywhere for the most part unless you're willing to move to the central mid-west like the Dakotas or Nebraska.

Florida is no picnic either, I was down there twice in the last couple of months and things are kind of scary. Although my time was entirely spent in Sarasota. In the end you have to do what you have to do.
paul - 01/21/11 22:20
Sorry to hear that. Not having a job sucks. At the same time moving to florida sounds real nice right now.

Ingram
Category: work
Anyone have any experience working at ingram micro? I have s phone interview for market spec coming up.
ladycroft - 05/12/10 10:51
both my brother and sister worked there for several years and enjoyed it.

I have worked at IM for almost 3 years... It's a great place however I must say they are getting more and more "corporate" by the day. This will be the 3rd year without raises - they cut our 401k, forced time off in December (using your personal vacation time), etc. Oh and I almost forgot - No matter what you accomplish, you will never ever get a rave yearly review. We just had them about a month ago - and it's all I hear around here is people complaining about the negative reviews. Personally - I worked my freaking butt off - took on special project after special project, spent extra hours here, even created an entirely new business process for our group, and my review said I "didn't meet business objectives". Doesn't upset me though because everyone I know got similar reviews.

Don't get me wrong - I love working here and hope to be here for several years to come. But have you ever seen a company take things away to save money... THEN GIVE THEM BACK? NO.

Perks are nice- and working for the largest technology distributor in the WORLD is pretty cool. Speaking of the perks, the offer internal job related training, such as managing time, interviewing skills, negotiating skills, etc. Obviously plus all the sales training meetings to inform the sales reps on new products.

Here's a huge FYI - the HR department is slower than hell. Took me 2 months from first interview to get the offer. Even now, applying to better internal jobs, they're so slow. I interviewed for a new position 2 weeks ago, and STILL have not heard even a peep.

Long story I failed to make short - IM is a great place to work. But with big corporations, you will always wonder what's going through upper managements minds. They just opened up a new center in Manilla, and most people are scared for their jobs. If I had to say, pack your bags and run, or welcome aboard... I'd lean towards welcome aboard.

Good luck man...
jim - 05/11/10 19:01
I worked there 10 years ago in customer service and probably have nothing really worthwhile to contribute.
paul - 05/11/10 18:39
(e:terry) and I think (e:jim) both worked there a long time ago.

Reboot!
Category: rant
So there's been a strong "Buy American" mantra going on lately, due to the economy and US car manufacturers troubles no doubt. I've never really gave a damn where anything was made, mostly because of my belief in the capitalistic system...people will buy what is better...price (all that crap made in China), quality (vehicles....I will never buy a US vehicle again), whatever the criteria.

But it's become obvious that almost NOTHING is made here anymore! So where is this country headed? What will be our economic backbone that will help us remain a world power? I see us in 50 years being a "second world" country for sure. The system is broken. Capitalism left alone will fail. Our Government is a travesty. Time for a reboot.
drew - 05/07/10 15:45
Even better (for the world, not the economy) is not buying as much, and when you must buy, buying a used thing.

The world has plenty of cars already--we don't need to be making nearly as many new ones. I always buy used cars.
tiburon1724 - 05/07/10 14:50
True, I think more of my Honda was made in the US than most GM vehicles!
metalpeter - 05/03/10 18:21
I have heard that there is no such thing as "An American Car'. For example all the stero stuff and computer stuff isn't made here. I agree with you that captilism isn't working here. As a system it does work but the probelm (in my eyes at least) is that American Companies are allowed to to move jobs to other places. Yeah it is great for Indians that they work in a call center and they are taught english but it is bad for Americans. I will admit that I have no idea what makes a company American, but I sure know Nike sent american Jobs over to Mexico. I don't know how you can take the greed and the money before people out and what is good for the country to be first or at least a close 2nd. Yes I get that it is about profit but it can't be only about making your profit as high as possible and making the workers wages lower or cutting them.

In terms of a reboot I agree but I don't know of what would really work better?

Just kinda Messing around what about if we pulled our troops out of the middle east and attacked Mexico. When we won the war and made them part of us, that would stop the illegals problem. That would stop the drugs that come from there. You could maybe even Legalise them maybe down there as a test state. Everyone who vists there for the vactions would now pay USA taxes. It would be one less place for people to send jobs. Plus we might be able to help mexicans and get them paid more money. Oh yeah and not let companies ship jobs over to china. Not saying it is a good idea and that it would work but it is at least better then wasting our money over in oil land.
vincent - 05/03/10 00:53
Things will be made here once again when energy costs get to the point that shipping something 1/2 way around the world is too expensive and it is cheaper to pay someone over here to make it.

A PSA to be nice to the census enumerators walking the streets starting this week. I'm one of them!!

Haven't posted in a while but maybe it'll stick this time. It was a combination of a boring life hence nothing to post about, and, well, that's mainly it. Working to change all that so we'll see.

So yes I took a part time job with the census in addition to my hellish full time job...$13.50/hr + 50cents/mile for any mileage incurred is a pretty good deal. Plus I'm assigned my immediate neighborhood which is pretty cool.

I also have a second interview coming up for what would amount to a third job but isn't really a job in my eyes...more on that to come.

This past week was our census training. First two days boring sitting in a room having a booklet read to us type crap but the last two days we got in teams and started practicing our enumerating! Plus we did like 9-4 every day. How nice is it to not be doing 7-5, then 1-10 the next day then 7-6 then 1-10 etc etc....I actually was getting into a sort of routine, felt better, was happier and not all stressed out about my store. Well that's over, back to the real job at 1:00 today...shoot me.

Anyway this made me realize I don't only need to get away from my current employer but out of retail altogether. I need to find a job with normal people hours but can't afford a pay cut either. Crossing my fingers.
tinypliny - 05/01/10 10:48
PSA - Prostate Specific Antigen?

Good luck with the job hunt! Hope you get a less stressful one out of retail!! \m/

A Year...
Category: gym
So it's been a year since James' Allentown Athletix push as I got a postcard saying my membership expires the 15th. Thanks James, I actually got really into working out for the first time ever but eventually stopped going....it's too far from me to be practical, so I won't be renewing my membership. Maybe Fitness 360 on this end of Delaware since it's soooo close, or maybe I'll research one of the places on Hertel.
james - 05/11/09 10:42
Hey, you have to do what works best. Thanks for playing along in our first round. ^_^
