sad story
So... the son of a local real estate mogul [i'm leaving out the name as i don't feel like being googly today] was in a bad car accident fri night, as you may have heard. (it was in the buffalo news etc).
I hadn't heard about it, but started getting messages from friends asking what was up, and then seeing "prayers with the family" updates on facebook.
So today I went to the ICU to see how he was doing... well the answer was not well.
And as much as I would have liked to update my friends, it would be a huge violation of patient confidentiality etc etc, so I had to keep it to myself.
So when I got the calls tonight "he died" it was like "yeah, i know, i'm so sorry."

But so now everyone is flipping out about how sad and tragic it is.

And it absolutely is. I am not debating that ONE BIT.

The only thing that bothers me is that this happens I'd say at least weekly, and more in the summer.

And there is no big media circus about it.

And now there is.

Just kinda sad that it's suddenly so much MORE of a tragedy if your dad is famous. :(

In any case... sad story all around, and my thoughts are with his family and friends. :(

agreed ajay.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing when Natasha Richardson (God bless her soul) was injured and passed away.
I was surprised to see the vigil outside her hospital, held by total strangers.
There are a lot of tragedies happening all around us. There was a guy on my floor who I used to run into in the kitchen all the time, and we would exchange nods.
Then one day I find out that he was in a motorcycle accident and died.
More recently, I heard that 2 days ago a guy in the building next to ours went berserk and shot 6 of his family members before turning the gun on himself. I'm still numb about that.

So yeah, it bothers me that people get all worked up when someone "famous" is affected by tragedy, as if their fame alone was some sort of an armor against Bad Things. But we're all human; we will all face tragedies in our lives, and depending on the roll of the dice, some more/less than others.

Yeah... 1:30am on Grand Island, at the entrance to Beaver Island State Park? You've got to work hard to be there at that time, at that hour. I'm not going to speak poorly of the dead and accuse him of being DUI (everyone deserves a little peace at some point) but it does make the cynical among us wonder if he was under the influence. I suppose in the end it doesn't matter.
tinypliny - 03/31/09 20:26
The whole thing screams DUI to me.
zobar - 03/31/09 19:38
Ugh. Come on people act sensible now will you.

See to me this story is different than how it goes most times. In this case it wasn't that the guys son was a big deal. It was that the big deal has a kid and it showed this guy in a softer light as like a human who suffers. This guy who we all know who he is but who's name we won't say so that google doesn't find this is often thought of as an ass. There are a lot of people who don't like him or disagree with his methods or what ever. I don't know enough about him to know what the construction and building issues are. That being said I think the story is really about him and not his son. When I first heard to the story I thought maybe some one was trying to send him a message through his kid. I have heard that the son was pretty crazy (drugs, women that kind of out of control) in the past. With out knowing his injuries I beat if he had a seat belt on he wouldn't be dead. Grand Island is crazy anyways lots of it is very dark and there are no lights. There is a difference between driving fast and being in control and not being in control and who knows maybe this death will get others who drive that way to slow down a bit on turns and not get killed but I doubt it.

Unfortunately, yes. Someone flips their SUV, falls off their roof, crashes their snowmobile, skis into a tree, crashes their boat, crashes their motorcycle, flips their ATV, dives drunk into a shallow pool, drives (skis/snowmobile/drives a boat/rides an ATV etc etc etc) drunk and crashes, on a weekly basis, and suffers a fatal head injury and dies. I see far too much of UNYTS crew [organ donation people] hanging out in the ICU. Sometimes they are John Does. It sucks all around. It just suddenly gets attention when the person is somehow notorious, for whatever reason.

Well maybe this will at least make people not drive like maniacs. For a little while. (I doubt it.)

zobar - 03/31/09 09:45
Every week, a person driving the wrong way down the street flips an SUV over a traffic circle and lands 100 feet from the vehicle, alone, a half-mile from civilization, in the middle of the night? What is this, The Fast and the Furious: That Denali Is Not a Dune Buggy?

It really bothers me how we assign value to people. And you're right, there is something all of us feel (or should feel) that doesn't mesh with the idea of some people having more value than others.

But what can you do? It's hard enough to change a culture within a company department, or a church.

tiburon1724 - 03/31/09 17:05

metalpeter - 03/30/09 19:27

mrmike - 03/29/09 20:22

more baby pix. :)
Even more amazing than the baby cuteness is the fact that my technophobe mother took these pix on her phone, and emailed them to me.

I think I'm seriously going to start a company making cozy adult baby pajama/leisure outfits. I would totally snuggle up in that job and play video games on my sofa. Maybe I need to enhance my sewing skills and come up with some samples....
kookcity2000 - 03/26/09 21:01
Truly, she is the president of Babyistan
tinypliny - 03/26/09 18:46
Were those clothes part of a giving-the-kid-the-open-choice-to-be-whatever deal?
tinypliny - 03/26/09 18:44
She is the sweetest little kid EVER!! I can totally understand why your mum did the unthinkable! :D
hodown - 03/26/09 10:57
Those little dimples are adorable!
mrmike - 03/26/09 09:15

metalpeter - 03/25/09 18:32

03/24/2009 16:41 #48181

woohoo!
I've lost 10% of my bodyweight. :)
(now for another 10%!)
chico - 03/24/09 21:42
Nicely done, (e:jenks)! Congrats!!
metalpeter - 03/24/09 19:36
That sounds like a lot but not sure if it is or not. I just hope you are doing this the healthy way and not the unhealthy way (I'm guessing you are doing it the healthy way, what ever that is).
joshua - 03/24/09 19:26
Hubba hubba
tinypliny - 03/24/09 19:04
Actually, 10% is quite a LOT. Congratulations. :)

(I was pulling your leg with the water comment.)
mrmike - 03/24/09 18:16
Good for you! That's got to feel good in every respect. Enjoy the woohoo
jenks - 03/24/09 18:12
Well it is a lot of pounds (hence the woohoo)- but for most people it's actually a pretty reasonable goal. And a lot of studies have shown that losing just 10% can make a big difference in diabetes risk etc etc.
drew - 03/24/09 18:08
10% would be a lot of pounds for me, but frankly, I could stand to lose that much.
theli - 03/24/09 17:14
Losing 10% would downright scare me.
tinypliny - 03/24/09 16:49
By not drinking water the entire day? ;-)
