the saddest song

this is my FAVORITE song right now. it was in the closing credits of "a mighty heart". i can't tell you how unbelievably sad this song was within that context.

how can you become a demented zombie?
Toxoplasma gondii

ok, so this is the stuff that they tell pregnant women about when dealing with cats and kitty litter. apparently this parasite likes to hang out in rat brains, but can only complete it's life cycle in a cat. so when the rat becomes infected with it, it's behavior changes and the rat loses it's natural fear of cats, and starts hanging out in front of cats where it most likely ends up being eaten; allowing the parasite to continue it's life cycle.

here is where it gets weird and kind of scary.

scientists wanted to know....

"Given that human and rat brains have a lot of similarities (they share the same basic anatomy and use the same neurotransmitters), a question naturally arose: if Toxoplasma can alter the behavior of a rat, could it alter a human?"

and so.....

"Parasitologist Jaroslav Flegr of Charles University in Prague administered psychological questionnaires to people infected with Toxoplasma and controls. Those infected, he found, show a small, but statistically significant, tendency to be more self-reproaching and insecure. Paradoxically, infected women, on average, tend to be more outgoing and warmhearted than controls, while infected men tend to be more jealous and suspicious."

It's controversial work, disputed by many.....but.....

"E. Fuller Torrey of the Stanley Medical Research Institute in Bethesda, Maryland. Torrey and his colleagues had noticed some intriguing links between Toxoplasma and schizophrenia. Infection with the parasite has been associated with damage to a certain class of neurons (astrocytes). So has schizophrenia. Pregnant women with high levels of Toxoplasma antibodies in their blood were more likely to give birth to children who would later develop schizophrenia."

and....

"A year later, Torrey and his colleagues discovered one more fascinating link. They raised human cells in Petri dishes and infected them with Toxoplasma. Then they dosed the cells with a variety of drugs used to treat schizophrenia. Several of the drugs--most notably haloperidol--blocked the growth of the parasite."

btw, it is estimated that about 3 billion people around the world are infected with this parasite. i'm guessing the majority in developing countries.

i would like to have a little bit of this parasite, so that i could be a little more warm and fuzzy and talkative without the help of some kind of alcohol or drug.

you can find the entire article here.

are you being mean? why?
james - 10/31/07 13:18
I love you so much for posting this. It has made my day, NAY! My life so much richer for reading it.
libertad - 10/30/07 21:35
When I worked for PETsMART (evil) they refused to take back kitty litter pans for return because of the possibility of someone who was pregnant of HIV positive coming into contact with them. At the time they sold these self cleaning ones for $100 and all you had to say was that you ordered one and it didn't work and we would send a new one without taking back the old one. For some customers we sent several $100 units never asking them for the old ones back. This obviously is an attractive policy to scammers. Now you could just do that and sell them on ebay if you were corrupt enough.
metalpeter - 10/30/07 19:06
First of all I'm glad to see you posting again. Secondly very interesting (but I didn't read the article). 3rd wouldn't having the parasite kinda be the same thing as the drug and you would depend on that just instead of the drug. I'm guessing it wouldn't have the same bad effects drugs can have. In any event I know this post wasn't about the party but it was nice to see you there.

Given all the lead baby items coming out of China, duct tape's probably a lot of safer.
jenks - 10/21/07 21:40
hehe, I wish I had a picture of it, but there's this coathook in my parents' kitchen, where my mom hangs her purse... and my dad would hang us there by our oshkosh straps.
mrmike - 10/21/07 19:20
USed to take two rolls of tape if the kid was hyper
james - 10/21/07 12:03
In the role playing world this is known as boffer parenting.

If anyone gets that joke, I love you
jbeatty - 10/21/07 11:37

scary holloween pic

wow, i think it's time to remove some of that makeup.

imk2 - 09/29/07 09:30
wearing makeup like this definitely makes you look older. the makeup settles into fine lines and accentuates them, especially around and under the eyes. outlining your lips above the lip line went out in 1989. it just looks like she's an old woman trying to look young, thus making her appear older than she really is. of course this is just my opinion, albeit i do have some experience when it comes to the makeup department.
fellyconnelly - 09/29/07 07:55
not as bad as some other makeup free stars...

Oh Paul there is a gay man lurking inside you after all!!!
paul - 09/28/07 10:30
Her blog actually seems like she writes it :::link::: and not some editor/agent.
paul - 09/28/07 10:24
I kind of love her for being so ridiculous. I wonder what she would look like completely makeup free? Do you think she would be pretty? I like her website too :::link:::
fellyconnelly - 09/28/07 10:02
that is when it gets REALLY scary!

die, BETTY's, die!
ok, i've been so lazy. well, maybe not lazy, but distracted. there is a ton i have not posted about so i will do a post every day of this weekend, to catch up.

first post is about betty's.

Fuck YOU BETTY. take your fucking ugly, dumpy and rude hostess and shove her up your fucking twat. i'd rather eat rusty razor blades covered in pus than to ever eat at your fucking establishment again. trust me, your shit AIN'T THAT GOOD. whatever you serve, i'm sure someone else serves too, but with better service. i've heard so many people complain about your restaurant that i'm perplexed as to how you are still in business. your place is not that good, nor is it that cool, and you certainly do not know how to run a business that will keep people coming back.

i will let every person, friend or stranger, know what i experienced at your restaurant and i will make sure that neither i, nor anyone that i have influence over, will ever step foot in your place again. take your fucking mixed greens and avocado salads and shove them down your hostess' throat, just like the dick that she sucked throughout high school, so that she could shut the fuck up. the sound of her fucking voice made me unable to digest your mediocre food. i'd rather eat at the soup kitchen down the street with the bums and addicts than to ever see her offensive, forced sneer or hear her shrill and piercing whine.

i want my money back as well as the 2 hours of my life that it took to eat lunch in your shit hole and an apology from that inbred, hobbit looking, crusty cunt. i'd gladly give you whatever i have left of your not so special food; preferably in shit form, preferably in her huge, fucking, gaping, trap so that she could see what it feels like to be fed grade A bullshit.

fuck you betty for hiring that troll you call a hostess. fire that bitch before she puts you out of business.

vincent - 09/01/07 11:00
Well you may have gotten an indirect introduction on how some well off people from Lewiston/Youngstown operate. The owners of that place are from a well off family from Youngstown/Lewiston.

I just think it was ironic that my Mom the other night wanted directions on how to get there, since they wanted to try it out being that ____ family owns/operates it.

I've never been there but knowing who owns it I have an idea and can see how they hired a person like the one you described.

What is it with these 20 something chicks that think they're from the O.C. emulating Paris Hilton & company? There are a great number of chicks with that awful speaky voice...
leetee - 08/31/07 20:39
oh, and not that you would want to know, (e:Metalpeter), but betty's is on Virginia and Edward Streets.
leetee - 08/31/07 20:37
ha ha ha... great post. we never bothered to actually eat at betty's, so i can't say whether or not the food is/was any good. at the time, there was a male host who told us to go away because they were too busy. so we did. never went back.
metalpeter - 08/31/07 19:17
What I will say that It is to bad you had a bad time because of the hostess. I didn't read about what happened in the chat and trying to find it might take some time. There are times when as a hostess you should be a bitch but those times are very few. I don't get why they would keep her if she was a bitch so I will assume that this is something that doesn't happen that often or maybe she is doing the owner. I just got a few different visuals from the movie waiting. I'm not going to defend her but she could have been having a bad day or the people before you might have been bitches and dicks so that got her in a bad mood. I don't even know where the place is so I doubt I would wind up going there anyways.
imk2 - 08/31/07 16:02
ok, fine. maybe i'm being a little melodramatic here, but she was a bitch.
jason - 08/31/07 15:43
Damn. Rude, poor, inconsiderate service is one of those things that absolutely infuriates me, too.

We drove by Betty's before and it looks nice - Josh, Jerry and I all said we would maybe check it out sometime but if the service is really bottom drawer then maybe we'll skip it.

Thanks for the warning.
tinypliny - 08/31/07 15:14
I couldn't say the same for the hostess unfortunately and we felt so wretched because of her. :/
tinypliny - 08/31/07 15:12
The waitress/hostess was pretty mean. Check out chat-history for details. I think the aggravating fact was that we were really not making any unreasonable requests and had already waited nearly 40 minutes before the whole bizzare behaviour started.

However, I need to state that the food was consistently excellent and our particular waiter was really courteous, polite and professional.
janelle - 08/31/07 15:01
I think I'm definitely adding Betty's to the top of my restaurants-to-visit list. Too many good stories on e-strip on this place to ignore it much longer =)
mrmike - 08/31/07 14:47
But how do you really feel about the experience?
mrdeadlier - 08/31/07 14:44
wow... pus... thanks for the imagery

"i will let every person, friend or stranger, know what i experienced at your restaurant"

well, we're waiting!
jenks - 08/31/07 14:17
whoa.. what did she do?!

Everyone always says that place is SOOOO fantastic... and then I keep hearing about the service being SOOOO horrible... I need to see for myself!
mike - 08/31/07 14:08
wowsa! What happened?
