"The only graphic designer with roadies"Category: design
A NY mag article about Edward Tufte, who I am completely obsessed with. His books on graphic presentation of information are amazing. His next book is supposed to be crazy - all real life physical stuff, not graphics.
I've been dying to go to one of his day long seminars. Anyone up for a road trip?

Painful InternetCategory: life
At our new place we are sharing the internet connection of the guys downstairs, but the wireless reception is completely painful. It's totally out for about 5 minutes out of every hour, and the rest of the time is really slow - like dialup slow, plus really long latencies. I just ordered a wireless bridge and am praying that that will be my salvation. If not I'll have to buy them a giant antenna to stick on their access point.
Also speaking of utilities, I've been cursing my morning showers because the water hasn't been very hot, but it turned out (e:james) had just turned the thermostat on the water heater way down. At least that is an easy fix :)

ahh, i love the easy fix. When I first moved into my house, i kept running out of hot water, which I didn't understand. I mean I don't take SHORT showers, but I'm not in there for half an hour, either. And there used to be THREE girls living there, and I can't imagine they'd tolerate hot water that runs out after 15 min. finally went downstairs, and found that the hot water heater was turned way down. yay.

I'd be leery of consuming such things (although in the past I've used Flickr's widget), put I'm producing a few for my mapping project that users can put on their own sites.
I am so amazed that people use javascript widgets served from other servers. I mean reading data is one thing, but readin gthe whole widget is so crazy. It is so mega totally insecure that it kind of makes my stomach feel sick. I mean it is a neat idea but I would never let any page I created run any javascript from any other person under any circumstance. Especially not from a young startup like they were talking about on that page.
