brilliant idea!(living in a high school)
ok, i just had an interesting idea while driving past grover cleveland high school. what if some investor took one of these high schools, provided they were not in use, like grover cleveland or hutch tech, and developed them into living units.

they could be small studio, 1 bedroom and a few 2 bedroom apts. i'm sure they could fit at least a hundred apts into gover cleveland, that place is huge. and what if they used the cafeteria and served food for its residents. they'd could include a salad bar, a pasta and/or stir fry station where people could add the ingredients they like and have them prepared right there. one or two meats could be served each night. nothing too complicated, but somewhat high end. they could utilize the auditorium to have a movie night each fri, sat or sun. they could have cartoons for kids on sat mornings. they could put on their own plays, shows, etc. the gym and weight rooms could also be used for by the residents. if it had a pool, then all they would need is a life guard and maintenance.

and what if all this was included in the rent. the food and use of gym and theater. how cool would it be to live in a place like that. this is plausible right?

I hope venting helped. I read every word and i have no words of advice or wisdom. I was a dreadful child myself (and a not so undreadful grownup) and i am not a mother. As a mother, you have what i consider to be the hardest job on the face of this planet. I wish you strenght and luck and patience. ((( Imk )))

First of all if you went down York street you went right past my house (red and Yellow).

I from Personal experance know Grover is huge. They Have a big Gym for and Pool for receation then there is the huge field and sub field in front of that wich are seperated by that walk way. I admit I used to run the Halls and up and down the steps, but there is set up steps that lead to another part of the building that I have never been to. I Assume that it was the part of the buliding that leads up to the tower. If Grover was to ever close I think converting it to apartments would be super easy. Each class room could be an apartment and then that huge Cafetaria could be Turned into a Resturant of maybe even a food court and could be open to the public as well. Not sure why they would ever close Grover but if they did it would be a cool idea.

when I think of living in a high school, I think of Jon Cryer's "Hiding Out" :::link:::

I'm down. Totally down with the 'Duck man'.
kara - 04/28/06 08:25
I used to live in a schoolhouse that had been converted to 8 apartments. The ceilings were incredibly tall, which made for some nauseating heat bills, but it was a huge, if boxy, space. The best part was that it used to be the town's main school, so it was centrally located to the center of town within walking distance of the "shopping district." I miss that place. I could definitely see your vision happening for other local schools, especially the bigger ones.

It would be like an old-folks-home for the not-old, which might sound lame but is not a bad idea. I want a cafeteria and a barber right in my building! I want outings on the Miss Buffalo. I want bingo night and movies and jigsaw puzzles in the community room.

that's a great vision you have imk, you should propose it to the common council.

oh and thanks jenks, you just gave me a great idea for the direction of my business.
jenks - 04/28/06 01:47
there's a building, i forget the name, but on north and delaware, that has a new restaurant in it called amaryllis. I guess it used to be a hotel, and the restaurant is in the old kitchen. It's got a cool bar and good food, but the coolest part of all- they do room service to the apartments! I think that's a brilliant idea.
theecarey - 04/27/06 23:02
why wouldnt it work? Thats a fun idea. Hey, we could go roller blading in the halls! ooh, basketball anytime I want.. With all that this new living unit would have to offer..who would ever leave the building??
uncutsaniflush - 04/27/06 23:00
I'm not that familiar with what happens in Buffalo, but in other parts of the U.S. converting old schools into residential units has been successful.

As to the food service aspect, it is my opinion that the sort of people would choose to in such buildings are into trendy food and hanging out. thus, i tend to doubt they would be interested in food from their own building no matter how good it was.

diplo
i know, i know it's sad that i get all my new music from grey's anatomy....but it's good nevertheless.
enknot - 04/27/06 17:40
you know imk2, there was a time that I would have bought the album for 80% of the stuff they played on Smallville, and that kinda makes sense, at least within the first few seasons of any show really. Typically, the shows producers have to find good music that isn't so popular that the lables want to charge for the songs being played. The only way to do that is go after underground acts. Happens all the time, at least for the first few seaons. Later when the show can afford a heavy hitter the get to play radiohead and stuff. One episode of smallville later in the shows life there was an episode with all R.E.M. songs on it. Friggin' R.E.M song from 96' and stuff. Was like an R.E.M. catalouge. It was annyoing.

And besides, where else can you find new music when everything else has been played out (cause not only is it on the radio full time it's on all the major shows, and Mtv too). Unless you have some sweet assed hipster friends, or are a hipster your self your stuck with what cha got.

So, ifin' your lookin' for some hip new acts in the same vein of diplo you should check out ratatat, and um....bakini, and lemon jelly. They're all pretty freeakin' sweet.

Yeah.

moving to africa?
i wanted to feel kind of dignified so.....

i applied for a job at the CDC as a Behavioral Scientist in Cote d'Ivoire. it only required a 4 year degree so i figured, what the hell, might as well give it a shot. for christ sake, it pays 65K. little did i know, the damn application on their website, took a whole 2 hours to complete. it was like a job interview, but in writing. sucked ass. but now i can say i applied for a cool job at a cool agency in africa. gave me something to do at work today.
ladycroft - 04/25/06 20:54
Heck yes! You KNOW I'd be visting you!!!

sour puss
what does it mean when you crave vinegary foods? i swear i could drink a bottle of vinegar with my dinner. i ate a whole jar of pickles today, and some pickled mushrooms and it's still not enough. and noooooo.....i'm not prego.

metalpeter - 04/23/06 10:40
I dislike vineger so I couldn't tell you. I don't like pickled things. But Dill Pickles I would love to eat an entire Jar, Yum. If you like and all ready eat things wiht Vinegar it most likely is just a craving and no big deal, but if that isn't something you are into then something wacky is going on with you at some hormonal biological level I'm guessing (not that I'm a doctor or anything)
paul - 04/22/06 22:49
They say people that don't have enough stomach acid crave vinegar. Matt says don't polish people pickle everything?
museumchick - 04/22/06 22:27
Do you like the vinegary-type potato chips?

damn, i'm starving
for all of you sushi deprived elmwood strip residents, worry no more, a new place will soon be open! you just have to manage to live through the summer first.

here's a quick run down of the recent events in my life......

went to toronto last week with (e:ladycroft) had loads of fun as seen in her post.

went to dinner that friday with some friends to hutch's for dinner and drinks, had lots of yummy mojitos!....the season has started.

went out for dyngus day and almost got into a fight with a 300lbs fat biotch who flicked her cigarette at us, but decided i could not risk the humiliation of getting my ass kicked as i've got a reputation to protect.

suffered through work the next day as i recalled the previous evening's numerous drinks and near ass kicking.

applied for a job at roswell for a clinical research associate position.....wish me luck everyone!

went on a diet, as i am starting to resemble 300lbs fat biotch. really

went tanning so i can look skinnier. all girls know that being tan makes you look thinner.

got summoned for jury duty....i doubt they will keep me as i've been the victim of a violent crime and will probably dismiss me, but i would looooove to be on one...a nice juicy love triangle murder, possibly.

spent 50 bucks on a video game, elder scrolls: oblivion, before realizing that my laptop does not have the needed components. DAMN!

am planning on buying a desktop so i can play my new game, hopefully after getting the roswell job.

got 5 letters from the federal govt saying that soon will be time to pay all of my student loans back.....yeah, good luck with that one, georgie, i've got a computer to buy so i can waste my time playing video games, and ignoring your bill collectors....

zobar - 04/19/06 19:05
You didn't hear it from me, because they've been trying to keep it on the DL for reasons that are obvious if you know what to look for ... but the owner of the new sushi shop is someone who is very well regarded in this area.

I've said too much already.

jenks - 04/19/06 17:34
haha, many good points.
-mom's corollary (sp?) to paragraph 9: "besides, tan fat is better than white fat"
-good luck at the job hunt. I wonder if I would see you (or paul) when I go back to roswell.
-I too have always thought it might be fun to be on the jury of a big nasty case. (then again i've always thought it would be fun to be a temp.)
-and i agree. I have much more important things to do than my bogus research project- like watch tv, drink beer/coffee with friends, enjoy the weather, sleep, and eat. Oh yeah, and obsess about the male species.
