coffee & what the hell?!!

Contrary to conspiracy theorists, I too doubt that either SPoT or *$'s (read star-bux) were responsible for the fire -- though I'm sure that the afore-mentioned theory was half kidding. It is sad though, I'm glad I was able to have a nice cuppa with (e:paul) before it was incinerated. One thing I noted was that they served Seattle's Best coffee -- kind of unusual for around these parts. It's pretty good coffee, not the best in the world (and it is owned by *$'s) -- but still pretty good!

I would be very surprised if they were back on their feet any time soon -- I don't think having a coffee house is a very lucrative business and it's going to take a lot to rebuild. Unless of course, the insurance company is very cooperative and helps them get back up on their feet and get things running again. Uh, not to sound like a pessimist but, yeah.... right.

i say tranny...

I've been going around taking an informal poll to see the first word that comes to people's heads when I say the word "tranny" -- so far, 5 out of 5 people have replied "transmission" -- whereas the first word that pops into my head is "transsexual".

Back story: I saw a plaque on my co-worker's desk a few months back that was apparently the "tranny award" for 2003. I saw it, turned around and went back to my desk where I totally lost my composure. When people asked me what was so funny, I told them about the "tranny award" -- and nobody got it. But I guess that makes sense. A lot of these same people also think the "twinky defense" is something you use when someone tries to mug you with a fruit pie.

Go figure

How to be a Nerd - lesson 1

Church of Bob & elmwoodstrip.com on the iPod

The Church of Bob or The Church of the Subgenius was a fake cult founded almost thirty years ago by a bunch of filmmakers, writers and underground cartoonists from San Francisco and Dallas. Its purpose is basically to celebrate the power of nerds and freaks and to mock the masses (nicknamed "pinks" ). They worship their assassinated savior, J.R. "Bob" Dobbs (see my icon) and claim that they are all descended from Yeti ancestors.

My guess is that Robert Crumb had something to do with this, but I can not prove it. You might want to ask Sister Susie the Floozie (see below)

As far as this site and the iPod, well, I use a great piece of software called pod2go (link can be sporadic), which incorporates, among other things, a reader for RSS feeds. So when I connect to my Mac, the software automatically updates those feeds allowing me to read the latest posts offline (without pictures, or much formatting, unfortunately) -- it's a great thing to have as I can check out what has been written that day as I'm cooling down after a run at Terrie's Workout (on Hertel). At any rate, it's a nerd's paradise isn't it?

There's also a new audio-based form of this called "podcasting", spearheaded by original MTV VJ, Adam Curry (Adam is also well known for registering "MTV.com" back in the early 90's when nobody gave a crap about the internet -- including the fine folks at Viacom ).

Okay, end of lesson 1. By the way, the spellcheck on this site is amazing. Though I noticed that it flagged "elmwoodstrip" as being incorrect.

Sex dwarf?

Marc Almond is in the hospital with severe injuries after being in an accident as a passenger on a motorcycle. The name Marc Almond may not be familiar, but most people know his 80's band, Soft Cell with their "Number 1 hit, Tainted Love" --

I associate Soft Cell with a lesser-known song called "sex dwarf" -- a classic in my book. Not to mention, Marc is a fairly accomplished artist on his own.

Anyway, here's hoping he doesn't emerge a vegetable. This reinforces my feelings that riding around at high speeds on a motorcycle just encourages a world of hurt.

the left coast!

wow -- there are actually more than a few californians [inlink]haikuster,22[/inlink] on this site. hey (e:haikuster) ... what would it take to convince you to send me a case of two-buck-chuck and a bag of jerky from trader joe's? ;) -- okay, truth be told, I go to Cleveland as they have a TJs down there (don't laugh... if you shop there, you probably know it's worth the trip!) --

we need the joe! i love wegmans, but the joe needs to be there to fit the rest of my cravings. even though they can't sell wine in NYS -- blast!

lo-cal vs. no-cal

hey (e:haikuster) !

well, if you're actually able to do it, [inlink]haikuster,28[/inlink] I would say for not only my personal tastes, but also to save anything that a broken bottle of wine could stain and/or ruin.... the Charles Shaw sauvignon blanc would be just dandy! chardonnay is WAY too sweet for me. oh, and if you could grab a tub of the Australian red licorice, well, I'd be stoked for that too ;)

see what can be done about freezing an in-n-out burger [inlink]j3sse,6[/inlink] as well -- okay, perhaps that's too much to ask. but hey, that's what a hamburger's all about!

(e:twisted) is one of the other west-coasters... though she is significantly up the 101 a piece (SF Bay Area) --

I'd take you up on the turkey trot - but seeing as you do 17-mile runs and I do about 5, i fear you would outpace me like the proverbial Kenyan

iForgot

I was going to talk about iPod stuff -- but I'm too tired. But I did see an interesting article (thanks to (e:Twisted)) about what can basically work like Tivo for the iPod. Too cool. I'm sure at some point the iPod will become passé -- you know it's getting there when your grandma mentions wanting one and it's the topic of conversation on some second-rate sitcom. but like i could give a crap.

anyway, check out the article if you're interested --

Thank you, drive thru

".... yeah, I'll take a double-double animal style, choco-vanilla swirl shake, and fries... well done." *sigh* I miss in-n-out burger -- they were the best, and they were simple (and they still are).

so dig this: living in kenmore, i've been trying to get the feel of the stepford neighborhood dynamic and have been uncertain whether it's prudent to show my political colors. i figured, "screw it if they have a problem with me" then today i saw a sign for mary lou rath on my neighbor's lawn. well crap, now when i put up a sign for kerry / edwards i'm going to look like i'm doing it in reaction to what frikkin' gladys and abner kravitz are doing. blik!

koffee

[inlink]paul,2050[/inlink] -- hey Paul, thanks for taking the time tonight. elmwood is always such a wonderful place to just get out and explore. i will make one correction to your journal, however... in order to link to me, you need to link to (e:j3sse) or else it goes to (e:jesse) -- which isn't me.

man, even the state i saw that Ti Powerbook in -- it is still such a cool machine. i'm such a pushover when it comes to good industrial design.

speaking of which, what the hell is the deal with all of these manufacturers that are coming out with the adonized iPod mini lookalikes (i think so far it's been toshiba and sony)? ugh, so typical to leech off what is truly innovative design (whether you like it or not, i think it's hard to deny that it's innovative).

okay -- so for tomorrow's entry, per (e:) Paul and (e:Twisted) 's suggestion, I'm going to talk a little bit about what can be done with the iPod (like anyone cares, right?) -- suffice it to say, anybody who looks at the iPod as just a music player doesn't know much about it. when's the last time you booted your machine off your MD recorder?

signing out -- ¡ coffee& esta muy bien !
