With death comes debtCategory: dead compy
My pooor sony vio finally died. Tho it was like 6 years old. I find myself want to play around with DJ progs. Also when the winter months come around Id like to play some sort MMORPG. I was thinking of putting myself in debt for mac book....good idea orr bad idea?
KeithT - 08/18/11 18:52
This is all very good advice. I started by asking my DJ friends what programs they use. Im awaiting an asnwer. Ive been looking at these fancy machines, but I wonder how much money goes into making them look fancy :::link:::

you guys are all such great compunerds. I'm going to agree with the crowd. Even though I'm rockin' a fruit box I wouldn't buy one if any of my computing needs were casual DJing or gaming in any reguards. Get a PC. And a maybe a desktop. You can always dual boot to linux when you're tired of windows problems. And the new windows is kinda tits out. I might have to do some of the same. Next time you hang out we'll do some spec scanning and PC shoppin' I haven't bought a machine in like 10 years so it'll be fun

Also, I don't have a particularly good opinion of software defined as "cool". Oftentimes cool =/= powerful (and sometimes cool =/= spiffy but dumbed down).

heh, the first bit of what (e:paul) says is actually excellent advice. Regardless of whether you are a snob or not, it makes sense to check if the software you want to use exists and functions well in the operating system you want to install on your computing platform (whatever that might be).
However, I would like to bet that most of the artsy types that (e:Paul) mentions are pretty desperate to get accepted by the community of other artsy types so they probably don't want to be seen with a plain windoze box. The argument that all of them have it, so maybe you should get it too is not a very good one. It isn't the same as doing a careful evaluation of your objectives in getting this computing unit.

Tiny is going to hate me for thks but unlike the software (e:tinypliny) and I use to do our work, not everything is cross platform.
There is no denying that every DJ from biggest headliner to tiny tent DJ at WEMF seemed to have a Mac. Same with everyone at art/media design school when I was there. I think in this case some of the coolest software might be Mac specific and I am guessing it will be even more so in the future. I guess first step would be to determine which software you want, what hardware you need for it and what platforms it runs on.
If you end up needing a Mac you could save a lot with a mac mini. They are way tiny, portable and super low energy. On the other hand they wouldn't be awesome for high end gaming, just ask terry.

I meant you will get the maximum graphics as well as processing power for the same amount of money in a desktop configuration. I seem to have swallowed a ton of words there.
You need the graphics for games and the processing for the sound/media applications. Get as many cores as you can and make sure your software is able to process parallel on all those cores.
I wouldn't go with SSD drives even though (e:Paul) seems to love them just because they are unduly expensive for not much space. If you are dealing with uncompressed sound formats you will need a ton of hard disk space.

Yep, I agree with that too. You'd be able to pick up a tower with as-good or better specs for $400-$450.

If you don't need mobility, I'd say you will the maximum for your money with desktops. Mobility has its price.

Yep, don't get a mac. A netbook wouldn't have the power to run heavy duty game like World of Warcraft. You'll need to make sure you have a fat graphics card. If you don't travel with it, a 17" might work best. I can't tell if this refurb Asus has sufficient graphics power but it's worth looking at for $599 :::link:::

pretty much agree with Tiny. For value, especially if you're looking to play a video game, don't get a mac.

or throw whatever you have right now at the highest graphics and processing power you can get. You will always end up with more than what you can get with a mac brand. I say, consult (e:Paul)

V.Bad idea. Debt always is. Just get a cheapo netbook. All windows can easily render graphics at a reasonable price. There is no point going to a mac unless you are a snob.

I remember that day. Something in it mentioned (e:lilho)'s aol screenname and she got so much spam afterwards.
Well at least she looks pretty cute....
