ipad, meet my world
Category: work
At my work they are talking about getting ipads locked down to citrix running IE only. The freaking piece of crap software does even have touch to type text area capability. That and it force quits all the time.

If we can't have ipads in their native form because of security risks, then why use them at all.

The whole situation is so sad. They might as well also buy ipads to use as cafeteria trays. It would honestly be just as useful. Having an technology is not useful if you cannot use it as intended.

Its like buying people ferraris and then making those people them push them. by hand or pull them by horse to get around campus.

Ya, but chrome won't work for things like EMR or etime.
tinypliny - 08/20/10 16:06
That is why I use *cough*chrome*cough* and have stealthily converted 80% of my sizeable office. :-)
paul - 08/20/10 13:33
Ya the problem is lots of the hospital software only runs on IE because the people that programmed them didn't plan for the eventual end of IE domination. Its really a sad state because it forces us to have to program everything against ancient IE. We can't even upgrade to IE8 because of the situation.
metalpeter - 08/20/10 13:08
Here is the thing, I don't know much about computers but even I know that when going with an ipad why don't you use the broswer made by the same company like Safari? How do I know that when I don't have an apple product? You get it from using itunes.... This is just practal knowledge not even common sense or knowing of computers. It would be like if you bought a GM car but said "We are pulling out onstar and adding this service that BMW uses to check on its cars".
carolinian - 08/19/10 09:34
Because, like, IE is known for being a draconian heavily locked down system that will disallow any feature with even the most remote chance of exploitability and the iPad is known for being ridiculously insecure and having 15 years of exploits. It all makes perfect sense!

Seriously, who's in charge of Roswell computer security? A Chimp?
paul - 08/18/10 20:58
Just click on the directory link on the internal site. It will replace the internal site altogether very soon.
libertad - 08/18/10 20:07
I got to see your work when I did the evaluation and signature process. It's funny how hard it is to make a signature with a mouse but it still is almost unmistakeably mine. The weird thing is that I don't know how to get to the part that you can look up other people like you showed me. It doesn't seem linked to the internal home page?

I never realized how much I would need chisselw. Thank goodness I bought like 10 of them during the last few years. I haven't had a change to use the round ones yet.

Tortoise Returns
Category: pets
We found the tortoise. Well someone found him on main St near north. They picked him up and brought him to a pet store on Massachusetts and Normal. Then they contacted (e:Matthew) via craigslist. I think it was the nephew of the pet store owner that found him.

He did not like the car ride. I think it made him sick as he shit everywhere.

As soon as he got home he ate and went into his borrough. Its a miracle he was not run over. Now to go take down all the signs.

so i had emailed ArtVoice to see if we can put an ad in there for a missing pet. They just got back to me with this message:

Sameer,

You can place an ad at no charge by visiting www.artvoice.com

You will place the ad in the classified section under "Lost and Found" in the "Community Billboard" section. Feel free to call the office should you require any additional assistance.

Cordially,

Joseph Fell

This is very cool of them and would have definitely come in handy if Basra had not been found yet. Very cool ArtVoice, very cool indeed!

Yay for the kindness of strangers!
matthew - 08/16/10 21:00
I'm putting the tortoise on the naughty step.
bill - 08/16/10 19:15
In the pic of Basra in the vehicle, there appears to be an open bottle of a New Belgium Brewing Company beer. Maybe that's what made him sick. Tortoises shouldn't drink alcohol. ;-) Glad he was found!!!
tinypliny - 08/16/10 18:04
Maybe you should really look into a GPS chip thing now. They used to do that Spooks all the time. :-)
tinypliny - 08/16/10 17:58
It's very lucky that the cars are a LOT more slower on Linwood now (as they ought to be). I hated all that zooming down the streets. It used to be a very dangerous block to cross the street. Not so anymore.

I wonder if some motorist saw him crossing... What would you do if you saw a huge tortoise crossing the road. I bet you would swerve thinking it was a rock or something.
tinypliny - 08/16/10 17:55
That's very happy news! I went past main and north today morning and didn't see him! I was somewhat worried that he would have found a place to hide in the middle of all that digging in front of N.Pearl/North! It's a miracle! He must have crossed the road safely and then navigated all across all that construction and what-not! Brave (and foolish) little Basra!
metalpeter - 08/16/10 17:52
glad he is back after his adventure , hopefully it is his last adventure and that he knows now not to take off like that.......
samathon86 - 08/16/10 17:40
great!! :)
libertad - 08/16/10 15:13
I'm so happy that you got him back! Poor thing. I can't imagine seeing such a large tortoise on Main Street! That would definitely be a WTF moment for me. He looks awful in the car.
heidi - 08/16/10 13:33
Yea!!!!! Welcome home, Basra!!

(That's probably Tango's Pet Store owned by Michelle Giomundo.)

Lost Tortoise - North and Linwood
Category: pets
Our pet sulcata tortoise named basra got away today in Allentown near the corner of North and Linwood, by the Church of the Ascension in Buffalo, NY. If anyone sees him, please return him to 24 linwood avenue, 14209. He went missing around 3PM. Please so not put him in water, he is a land tortoise, not a water turtle.

metalpeter - 08/16/10 17:22
Hope you find him as well
libertad - 08/15/10 21:27
This sucks. I hope you find him soon.
uncutsaniflush - 08/15/10 21:10
I hope that there is a happy resolution. Please update us if there is any news.
paul - 08/15/10 18:36
They don't suggest glueing, drilling, screwing and attaching things to the shells. Its like a living growing tissue. I bet I could get a gps chip implanted though - if I ever get it back.
heidi - 08/15/10 18:33
Nisha has a dog license and owner notification tag. Should Basra have a brass plate screwed to his shell?
heidi - 08/15/10 18:05
:-(
paul - 08/15/10 17:59
We tried looking everywhere he could possibly walk. I am convinced someone took him. Maybe they just thought he was lost. Hopefully they will find this or the craigslist post and return him.
heidi - 08/15/10 17:54
Do you want help looking?
tinypliny - 08/15/10 17:38
How did he get away!!?? He couldn't have gone very far, could he? Could he have dug himself into another yard perhaps? Maybe in that big trench you have in your backyard (if you still have it from last year...)

I'll keep an eye out! You should put up posters down linwood/north/summer/franklin. He has to be in the radius of 2-3 blocks.
