Erie County Fair - misc other
Category: fair
The fair also has tons of other stuff, from bizarre live infomercials to bathtubs, teeth whitening (2 shades, $79) and no cook cheesecake packets. Even a Christmas village. (e:matthew) said that he read it was the second largest fair in the world.

My favorite part of the fair was the infomercial center. It's funny that you and Mike thought I hated it. Nice pics.
metalpeter - 08/15/10 12:37
I love that it says it is ok to say "Merry Christmas". Did you get to see any of the shows (not sure what they are this year) I think like dog stunts or pig or duck races? [I'm going thursday and my sis and niece are going and then taking off at some point, I'm going to see Ultimate night of Distruction]. There is a lot at the fair. I don't remember the stat but it used to be that it was the biggest county fair in the country I think or maybe 2.......................

Erie County Fair - animals
There are so many animals at the fair. Every farmer wants to win giray premium. We learned a lot of interesting facts. One was that Americans spend on average only 14% of their income on food. It is one of the lowest rates in the world.

What is that in the last picture???
mike - 08/15/10 23:21
it was cool seeing a chicken lay an egg and we saw a cow that just birthed a baby calf and still had the placenta hanging out of it.
metalpeter - 08/15/10 12:32
Nice Pictures seeing that one chicken with the egg is wild, at first. But if you think about it, it is natural just never seen it before........

It's fascinating to see what people eat across the world and at what costs: :::link:::
tinypliny - 08/15/10 10:35
Re: the 14% comment. It's about how much subsidized processed food people eat in general. I am sure you must have seen this famous set at some point :::link:::
Commentary: :::link:::

One look at what people eat and how much they spend across the world tells you about the general health of the country.

I just read these insane facts about healthcare costs in US.
- The average cost to visit an urgent care clinic is less than $200, whereas a hospital emergency room visit usually costs at least $600 and often much more.
- Having a baby in the U.S. is expensive. Charges for routine delivery (including doctor?s fees) are about $6,000 — often more.
- The daily hospital stay for room and board and doctor's fees can be $2,500 ( and even more at some hospitals!), so an average stay of only three days costs $7,500. That amount does not include medicine, surgery, laboratory costs, and other similar expenses.

I guess the whole system of health is skewed in this country. The major stress - that should be on prevention, is completely non-existent. The entire system encourages bad habits and poor health and then taxes the individual (and the community through ill-advised subsidies) heavily for illnesses that develop due to these habits.

People may criticize social engineering, but the current wide chasm in the healthcare Vs. prevention balance cries out for shifting the stress to education about good eating habits and giving people the time and initiative to think about the well-being of their bodies for a change instead of travelling closer and closer to the sick part of the health spectrum every year.

Erie County Fair Indian Village
We swung by the Indian village on the way out of the fair. Sadly, we missed the dance show. That is usually my favorite part of the fair. It reminds me of (e:Jacob).

The bead treaty thing is kind of sad. We all know how that ended.

That's what I'd've wanted to see.

The Dancing would have been nice to see...................................................

oysters, clams and crab
The oysters and clams were good as always. This time we got less oysters because they were out of the Fanny Bay ones. Instead we got the crab meat cocktail which was so freaking good. Crab without the inconvenience of the shell is awesome. It costs $9.95 which seems pretty reasonable to me.

Who knew clams had so many predators. Must make life tough for them. :::link:::

translation
Category: language
These are supposed to be the translated instructions for growing some seeds on a Chia pet type plastic toy, flower box.

What are we really supposed to do. Do they just mean to put them in

warm water? Seriously, what kind of seeds can live through an hour of boiling.

image
metalpeter - 08/14/10 13:19
if it works like how a chia pet does then they left out part of it. I think they mean you put the man with the seeds on him and let him steep in the hot water not the seeds but I have no idea.........................

"Jing Ling-blooming with the degree of modeling will follow Oh change! Is a fun and full of hope and Germany' s protective shield on the table."

Yes, we are all going to nuclear war.

I can't find a better translation, but this is a product by the same company :::link::: "crystal growing wish flower" love it!
