Your grandmother's scrub brush
Cause I am super crazy I ordered a case of scrub brushes because they are so hard to find. If anyone wants one I'll set one aside for you. They are $4 a piece which is very cheap (at cost).

They are 9in by 2.5in and have wooden handles. The bristles are tampico. They are very long lasting if you let them hang to dry out. These are definitely your grandmother's scrub brushes. Because there is no plastics they are much better on the earth.

The brushes are in.
brit - 07/20/10 00:32
I want one! I have new house to keep scrubbed now!
tinypliny - 07/17/10 21:28
Damn. Again. Your company does not sell body brushes. And looking at what they sell, my hopes of using this one as my first fabulous body brush are beginning to sink a bit.
libertad - 07/17/10 17:39
I can't imagine using this particular brush on my body but what you do with it is your business : ) It looks just like the picture. If I am happy with this order I might make another proposal to order more stuff from their website with other peeps to make their minimum order which I believe is $30. Check out their website to see if there is anything you want. They have lots of different brushes of different material such as horsehair.

Take a look: :::link:::
tinypliny - 07/17/10 13:01
Damn. I looked up Tampico fibre and was surprised to find that they are used the most in body brushes - which are excellent for exfoliating and generally getting the circulation up.

Skin is pretty durable. ;-)
tinypliny - 07/17/10 12:59
So does it look like the pic you posted or does it have a handle?
heidi - 07/17/10 12:58
No, definitely not. In baltimore, old ladies use them to scrub their granite stoops on their rowhomes. They're for floors and tubs and other durable surfaces.
tinypliny - 07/17/10 12:54
Can this be used a body brush - what do you think?
libertad - 07/16/10 15:12
I just ordered it this morning so I don't expect it for a week. At this point with (e:heidi) and (e:tinypliny) having reserved theirs I have six left.
heidi - 07/16/10 10:32
I definitely want one. I'll be back in town monday night.
libertad - 07/16/10 10:14
I use these for my sink and tub. I use Bon Ami as a cleanser but you can use them with whatever you like.

TAMPICO FIBER

GRUPO INTEROCEANICO CALA is a Mexican producer and exporter of Tampico Fiber, a natural fiber unique to Mexico .

Tampico Fiber is made from a plant unique to the semi-desertic areas of northern Mexico , the “Agave Lechugilla”. It has been exported for centuries all over the world to manufacture cords, ropes and stricks or to be used as a filler in the brush making industries for brushes, scrubbers and brooms for industrial and personal use.
The natural color of the Fiber is creamy white, but it is often dyed other colors. Tampico Fiber has great liquid holding and release properties - it will absorb 65% more water than plastic fillings. It has a unique surface roughness due to crystals of calcium oxalate embedded in the surface. There is really no plastic substitute for Tampico Fiber . The fiber is unsurpassed in most general sweeping applications, and in all applications requiring liquid retention, scrubbing and surface finishing
tinypliny - 07/16/10 10:05
I know. I know. I could have wiki'ed it. But none of these seem to fit the brush profile. :::link:::(disambiguation)
tinypliny - 07/16/10 10:04
What is tampico?
tinypliny - 07/16/10 10:03
What can you use them for? I will take one regardless...

Ideas welcome. :-)

I often use a question mark on a title if I am not sure what it will be yet. I was trying to post a picture saved from my verizon online photo album but it wouldn't work. When I went to upload files the file was not in the folder that I had stored it in but I tried manually selecting it. It was saved as jpeg. Anyways, I posted the journal to see if it the pic was there or not and the question mark looked appropriate for today so I left it.

priceline.com revisited
I got to say that I loved having a car for a day. It has been years now since I have owned one and there is something really liberating about it. The car was very nice too, surprising because it was a Ford. It was equipped with satellite radio which can be a bit of a distraction because there are so many channels. It would have been nice if I could have preset the channels I would have been interested in before my trip started. It was a beautiful day for a drive and it was nice to see my dad, bro and his girlfriend. We had an excellent BBQ that included three grills, two charcoal and one gas. It was just so good and I wish I could have that entire meal over again.

The point of this all is to say that the car cost me more than I had thought. In the end the final bill is as follows:

$24.61 Rental fee including taxes from priceline.com
$27.88 Insurance from Avis
$15.00 gasoline
$4.00 tolls

TOTAL $71.49

The reason that the insurance was more than I expected was because $10 only insured the car. The other $18 insured me in case of personal or property injury I may cause on to others. I was not willing to take the risk of not being fully insured so I paid the extra.

The funny thing is that if I had my own car it would have been so cheap for me to rent the car because I would have had my own insurance policy that would cover rentals. I was wondering if people like me could purchase their own policy for a year that would only cover rentals?

So the next time I have to go to Rochester by myself I will check into Amtrak. I actually love trains and besides being way cheaper they are gentler on the earth. I'm not sure why I never took it before? I probably looked into it when I first moved here and it was more expensive than taking the bus so I never took it. As (e:tinypiny) commented in my last journal it is currently cheaper to take the train.
tinypliny - 06/30/10 20:50
Btw, I am taking Amtrak to NYC this weekend and guess how much the round trip costs? $90.
tinypliny - 06/26/10 17:53
Hey! I take Amtrak all the time and the Exchange street station is definitely not what I'd call terrifying! Well... in comparison to Rochester's downtown after 4:00 PM, *no place* can possibly deserve that adjective.
dragonlady7 - 06/25/10 21:36
Yeah, non-owner's insurance is a good thing. I just changed my policy because I got a car again after 6 years without, and the agent said it was a really really really good thing I'd had insurance that whole time because a) it made getting my new insurance a whole lot faster, and b) it made my new insurance a whole pile cheaper. So I felt a lot better about having spent a bunch of dough I didn't have on it, in the past.
Amtrak: It's great! Sometimes runs late. Generally between Buffalo and Rochester it's fine; just avoid the Lakeshore Limited, and take the Empire or Maple Leaf lines instead. I've been on Amtraks all over NY State and once in Illinois; the conductors are friendly/helpful, the accomodations comfortable, it's normally not really crowded, and it's much more relaxing than driving. It's not the cheapest, and the stations are generally not conveniently located for whoever's picking you up (I take Buffalo to Albany often, and the Buffalo station that's not terrifying is out in Depew, and the only Albany station is actually in Rennselaer, a tiny city just east of Albany/south of Troy).
If you take it all the way to NYC, though, holy crap, the view out the west windows of the train is fucking gorgeous all the way down the Hudson. Do it. Whoa. It is *the* best way to get to the City.
zobar - 06/25/10 21:21
(e:dragonlady) previously had non-owners auto insurance which she says cost around $15 per quarter or so. [That was through USAA, which is only for servicemembers and their families - their rates are somewhat lower than other insurance companies.] Could be worth looking into if you drive more often.

Priceline.com and Father's Day
I just rented a car on priceline.com for tomorrow so I could go see my Dad in Rochester. First time I have rented a car. They accepted by bid of $15 plus $10 in fee's and ~$10 for insurance and ~$10 for gas it will cost me about the same as taking the bus. It seems like taking the bus should be cheaper but it isn't. Unfortunately, Priceline does not allow you to rent from anywhere besides the airport. It would have been so convenient if I could have just walked around the corner to the Budget on Main Street. I'm sure I would have had to pay a lot more if I got it though them directly.

My Dad is grilling chicken and making corn. I'm bringing a potato salad, veggies for grilling and a fruit tart. I got the recipe for the fruit tart from Mike's mom.
tinypliny - 06/20/10 01:26
An annoying recent development was that they demolished the downtown building that used to be the Greyhound terminal in Rochester. I really liked the convenience of going straight into Rochester downtown (from Buffalo downtown) and taking one of the numerous buses to the Uni. Nowadays, the greyhound terminal at Rochester is somewhere in the boondocks - devil knows where. If you look around, you can't see any signs of civilization around. Makes it awfully tough to get anywhere from a bus stop in the wilderness.
tinypliny - 06/20/10 01:20
Oh and Amtrak has power outlets for laptops - which makes it really a good choice for my work-related trips. They don't have wifi, though. Megabus has wifi AND power outlets. Some Greyhounds have wifi but no power outlets.
tinypliny - 06/20/10 01:19
I have a very high opinion of Amtrak. Even though they do have delays because of the cargo train priority issue, they try their best to be on time and make up for a lot of delays by going fast in the sections they can. On a longer trip (for example to NYC), the fast and slow bits make up for each other and they are almost always 99% on time.

Whenever I have taken Amtrak (quite a number of times, now) they have always whizzed past Rochester in exactly 1 hour and 20 minutes or so. I have timed them going from Buffalo to Rochester because I need to be at meetings in Rochester on time. Coming back from NYC/Rochester is another issue though. I don't think I have ever tried to keep time because mostly I am super-tired or busily trying to take notes and follow-up on the meetings I attended while in Rochester.
libertad - 06/20/10 00:46
Technically (e:tinypliny) you are right. It is actually $41 round trip and the car will cost ~$45. Taking a car will save me from asking my dad to pick me up on father's day and it will be easier to transport the food I am taking with me.

I never even knew Amtrak went to Rochester and that it was cheaper than the bus. I'm glad to at least know it is an option. I have heard that they often will have long delays because cargo trains get priority on the tracks.
tinypliny - 06/19/10 21:23
hmmmm - a roundtrip costs
$36 on Amtrak - cheapest round trip. ($44 if you choose some other time - other than the cheapest)
$40 on Greyhound - if you are returning tomorrow.
$46 on Megabus - same day return.

Its cheaper if you book some days in advance. I don't think the prices are that unreasonable...
janelle - 06/19/10 17:36
I get frustrated too when renting a car is cheaper. I want to fly to Texas next fall for a vacation and I explored flying into a city and then using rail or bus between several cities and it was too inefficient and more expense than just renting a car.
paul - 06/19/10 15:46
I love that fruit tart. Especially, the peach one.
