Oysters fight back

I ended up eating the oysters right from their shell but they put up a
serious fight when I was trying to kill them. Very unlike the clams
which just kind of surendered to the inevitable.

I think this might be the first time I was injured killing my food. I
guess it's only fair.

They have these razor sharp little fangs you have to rip out before eating them, but sometimes they bite before you can get them out.
tinypliny - 03/09/10 01:53
Do you mean they are still alive, reach out and nick you when you pry the shells open - or did you get those cuts from sharp shell edges?
jason - 03/08/10 20:55
Shit, get the DuPont ones, the one guy says he sharpens his katana with it
jason - 03/08/10 20:54
Paul, it is clear you should invest in some oyster shucking gloves. Quick search on Amazon:

yeah, oysters are tough. The oyster shuckers in new orleans wear like kevlar gloves. And put a little antibiotic ointment on that cut- they can have some icky bugs on them too.

Transformation complete

I can't tell you how many people I see with an Apple sticker over whatever laptop they have. You are going against the grain here :)
tinypliny - 03/07/10 19:09
Eh? You transformed a mac box by sticking a cross tape on it?

Fedora 12 Verizon USB 760 Setup
Category: linux
Verizon USB 760 dongle setup for Fedora 12. As a side note, they are down to $9.99 online.

image

In order to get 3G working on fedora I needed to use the following setting with NetworkManager.

1. First insert the dongle but then eject the disk that automounts as a CD. If you don't eject the disk it sees the dongle as a disk instead of as a modem. I am pretty sure there is a way to prevent this from happening but I haven't figured it out yet.

2. right-click network manager icon - choose edit connections. Click the mobile broadband tab and enter

Number:#777
Username: your phone @vzw3g.com e.g. 000000XXXX format
Password: vzw

Then just left click the network manager icon and select the network from the list

I believe it is the same price they pay for blackberries. I turned mine in for this instead. I need it so that I can get into the network and fix stuff from anywhere in an emergency as a lot of stuff depends on me. There is also a plan where you pay $10 or $15 just for the days you use it.
tinypliny - 03/07/10 16:52
5GB data per month for $50?! That's a huge rip-off. Wonder how RPCI can afford this - even if it were 50% of that price. I am guessing not many employees get this gizmo.
paul - 03/07/10 16:45
I think it is like $50/month but I have no idea - it is a work thing and I think they get them cheaper. It includes 5GB data per month but it is not as fast as DSL with the advantage that it works just about everywhere.
tinypliny - 03/07/10 14:05
This is so interesting. So the device is $9.99, but how much is the internet access rate for those 2 years? Can this serve as a substitute for my current DSL?

Fedora 12 Recap
Category: linux
So today I was feeling under the weather and had some more time to play with Fedora 12 on the macbook pro.

Literally everything is working and I am pretty sure I am going to switch over now.

Working:
disk encryption
battery life is better
dual monitor
3d desktop
bluetooth mouse and keyboard
flash 10
netbeans 6.8
verizon usb modem
exchange on thunderbird via davmail
cisco VPN
wifi
citrix ICA client - just remember to remove

The best part is that aside from getting exchange into thunderbird, everything else worked by default. Its come a long way since the days when you had to spent a long time getting wireless and your graphics card to work.

Fedora even comes with new FOSS graphic card drivers which do an excellent job with 2D but you still the need the real nvidia drivers if you want to get a 3D desktop.

Honestly, it is totally amazing.
paul - 03/07/10 12:25
For me fedora was the best option because all of our servers are CENTOS which is a RHEL clone.
paul - 03/07/10 12:24
Even citrix is working for me.
uncutsaniflush - 03/07/10 12:02
It's nice to hear that someone has a pleasant Linux experience. I've heard good things about Fedora 11 and 12 but I've not gotten around to actually trying Fedora again.

PBS donation
Category: charity
I called PBS this morning to make a donation. I wanted the Go Greener DVD that was currently advertised on the PBS pledge drive but the
person on the phone could not find it in the system for like 5
minutes. You would think that they would know th things currently
being advertised.
lilho - 03/06/10 19:22
where are you???
