Sticky Door Quick Fix
We've had a sticky door in the back hallway. You have to turn the handle with your right hand while pounding the upper left hand corner with your left hand. Hardly convenient for a fire emergency and deathly for anyone under 4' trying to get out in the event of a fire.

Found a quick fix on line. Where the door is sticking to the frame, hammer a 16d nail into the frame. The force of the hammering the nail in drives the frame away from the door. I used three nails in the frame and it got the job done. I can now open and close the door without pounding it!

Good trick, I'll keep that one handy. On some doors in our house I used wax to reduce the friction, it worked for me, I guess it's kind of a skateboarder trick, waxing curbs to slide them. Sometimes you gotta improvise. :)

Dungeons n Dragons
I gave in to the dork side and I am now playing Dungeons and Dragons (4th edition for those of you who are dorkier than me and care to know).

Every other Wednesday night I am meeting with a group of grown men to transform myself into Elias, a female Elf, who is a devout cleric.

Yup, I'm having fun. I anticipate the fun to continue.

Hi, Janelle.

Just wanted to let you know that we have a pretty good sized community of D&D players for the Buffalo area, and wanted to invite you to join in.

You can find us at :::link:::

Hope to see you there.
metalpeter - 10/03/09 18:27
I have never really played but it sounds pretty fun, hope it stays fun.
janelle - 10/01/09 15:56
Wow, what enthusiastic responses!

(e:James), Aww...you're so sweet... hugs to you for thinking of me and creating a universe to play. When will it be ready?! Eagerly awaiting!

4th edition is substantially different than what I remember playing with my brother, which was first edition, I think, but I'm not certain. There's been a few changes along the way.

I really like the use of the grid maps and watching everyone's characters make moves on the board. And the tactical aspect of moving your character to the right spots or trying to sneak by something. When I played a long time ago, you always moved around in a monolithic group doing everything together.

And I sent you an e-mail about potentially joining the group.

Cool beans
joshua - 10/01/09 14:36
Ha - cool. Growing up a friend's father ran a game each week and I remember them role playing down in the basement. It was fun to hear them shouting, lol.

  • grin*

that's awesome Janelle, awesome. Yes, please provide updates on the adventures of Elias!

hahahaha

We will expect updates - since you ruthlessly butchered (and burnt) your SIMS family. Hmmm... I wonder whether we should rat out your SIMS exploits to the Dungeon lords. HEHEHEE
james - 10/01/09 09:30
sweet!

How are the games?
Do they want other players?

I have been building a little universe for D&D, knowing you wanted to play, but 4th edition rules are still in Tagalog for me.

An ode to the Little Red Truck

image

Oh, little red truck
You reignited my love for you.
Half a tank of gas from Buffalo to Pittsburgh?!
I couldn't ask for more from our little truck!!
You must have heard our resentful mutterings
of low gas mileage and frequent repairs
You must have sensed our unfaithfulness
As we coveted the Kia Soul and the Suzuki sx4
Cash for Clunkers, how could we turn it down?

How easily I forgot, little red truck
that you faithfully journeyed with me
from Illinois to Philadelphia.
You ventured the twists and turns
of the Pennsylvania turnkpike
twice a month for a year
so that I could see my fiancee.

I promise, I'll never speak of trading you in again.

Piano
Today, I happily claimed possession of my childhood piano.

If you pass by our house you might catch a glimpse of me happily pounding away on the keyboard. And you might hear the sounds of Billy Joel tunes and cheesy Christian music.

My house is complete. It has a piano, a husband, two cats and a dog. It can't get any better than this.
bridgette - 08/13/09 11:33
Bless you!!! Doesn't it feel great when you get to the point where things are just good?!?! I have my guy, 2 beautiful girls, 2 cats, 2 fish, 2 snails (we've got the Noahs ark syndrome going on here, HA) and like, a huge jungle of plants! No piano yet,but who knows!
metalpeter - 08/12/09 19:43
Can't speak for anyone but I'm guessing hearing the cats on top of the Piano Would be enough of a sound that, there is no need for that sound,HA. Besides when some uses that saying they never mention all the crying, HA
jenks - 08/12/09 07:04
what about the pitter patter of little feet? ;)
tinypliny - 08/12/09 04:54
Congratz! :D Is it a grand/upright?

Buffalo Drivers
Flashing yellow light at the intersection means proceed through the intersection with some caution.

Flashing red light at the intersection means stop and proceed after yielding to traffic.

Learn how traffic signals work, Buffalo drivers!

See, I am equally annoyed at drivers and bicyclists.
metalpeter - 08/11/09 20:00
You never really see it but there is also a flashing green light. What pisses me off is when people roll through the stop sign and think it is ok. No come to a complete stop. Not sure if that or people who stop at the stop sign then sit there and act like it is a red light piss me off more, ARG
jenks - 08/10/09 11:57
I thought you were supposed to treat any flashing light (red or yellow) like a 4-way stop? Maybe it's just red. Or, how about you use common sense... if there are a lot of people at the intersection- STOP! even if you have the yellow light... ack.

There was actually a TORNADO here the day after I got to town... but I didn't know- just noiced driving around that there were a lot of tree branches down, and a lot of places lost power... well I guess they lost power to the lights at a major intersection.... like a 4 way stop with 3 lanes of traffic in each direction... with just a blinking light... yeah, that was fun.
leetee - 08/10/09 10:44
Yesterday, the lights went out at Niagara Falls Blvd and Sheridan after a power surge at the beginning of a thunderstorm. I bet if we had folllowed the yellow/red flashing light rules, we might have had to sit and wait for the lights to go back on. Works for smaller intersections, but not for one with that much traffic.
jim - 08/10/09 10:13
I had to teach James what the flashing traffic lights meant :)
james - 08/10/09 09:39
I like it when they drive in the bike lane. Honking and telling me to get out of the road is just icing on that lovely cake.
zobar - 08/10/09 09:24
Infuriating Buffalo Driving Trick #1 [Passive]: Come to complete stop at red light. Wait for car to come to complete stop behind you. Activate left-hand turn signal.

Infuriating Buffalo Driving Trick #2 [Aggressive]: Drive in parking lane. When encountering a parked car [surprise!], gun it.
