Just in time for "cough and cold" season, Wegmans Food Markets will offer free antibiotics throughout its 72-store chain.
The Rochester-based supermarket chain announced today it will give away free 14-day supplies of nine categories of oral antibiotics starting tomorrow through March 31.
Wegmans CEO Danny Wegman said the free antibiotics program will help customers with health and economic issues.
"We understand the economic pressure families are facing, including the rising cost of health care, which is something I'm especially concerned about," Wegman said in a statement.
The drug program is expected to save consumers approximately $1 million in out-of-pocket medicine expenses.
Participants in the Wegmans program must have a new or existing prescription for the antibiotic and a Shopper's Club card. There is no limit to the number of prescriptions that can be filled.
The list of free drugs includes Amoxicillin, Cephalexin, Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim, Ciprofloxacin, Penicillin VK, Ampicillin, Tetracycline, Erythromycin Sterate/Ethysuccinate and Doxycycline.
Late last month Ahold-owned supermarket chains Stop & Shop and Giant Foods announced similar goodwill programs that began Jan. 2 and run through March 31.

Not to be a debbie downer, but you SHOULD be afraid of the superbugs. There are a few super-resistant strains already, that are only sensitive to ONE antibiotic- and resistant strains of that have been found. I.e. bacteria that CANNOT BE KILLED by ANY of the antibiotics currently made. Yes, be afraid. Be very afraid.
eh, I am not afraid of super bugs coming out of people directly taking antibiotics.
Now all the antibiotics they give to animals so they can survive on meat-factory farms? That freaks the shit right out of me.
lets just create those super bugs even faster! I just think that this just is gonna make people get antiobiotics for things that they actually don't even help or don't really need even more. They'll figure eh its free, who cares. And we all know doctors who will write antibioitics for anything just to please people. I don't agree with it. In mind of full disclosure I work for the competition Rite Aid as you know but I seriously do feel this way!
When I first started reading that I was like Oh wow they are just giving people antibiotics as if it were candy and then i read the part abuot a prescription. Come and get your free antibiotics and self treat yourself and your sexually transmitted diseases!
but fyi- none of those will do anything for a cold. Even if they're free. ugh.
Ok you just almost gave me a heart attack.
But you said they do still need a prescription?
Ok then.
